Hi I’m fairly new to playing about 5 weeks and just want some advice on learning a new song. Currently I learn section until I can play along with the track. I then move onto the next section and play that until I’m comfortable with it. I then play through both parts until I can play along to the lesson. Then part 3, 4 etc. I’m having great fun and find that as I progress my technique is really improving. Finished ep268 recently just trying up the speed. Any advice greatly appreciated. Stay home and stay safe everyone

Hi Phil
If you have only been playing for 5 weeks and you are able to get through EP268 in any way shape or form you are doing very well. I would love to hear a post of your skills to date. that lesson has lots of quite tricky ingredients and much technique. I am guessing you are perhaps one of our younger members to have progressed that quickly. If you know nothing about it save from copying the lesson parts I would however rudimentary it may seem run through Brian’s beginners course and then his rhythm and lead courses. That doesn’t stop you getting on with playing the lessons you like but it will make sure you have the fundamental knowledge that it is best to have and most likely needed at some point under your belt.
hope that’s a help

Hi John I wish I was that young, just coming up to 55. I had a course of lessons many years ago but needless to say I gave up because I never seemed to progress (obviously I must have learned some technique) Always hade the guitar out and messed around with no direction many times. Think this way of teaching is great as you can pick a section loop it and practice and practice. Will certainly check out the beginner lessons thanks for the recommendation.

Hey Phil, that is exactly how to do it. My only advice would be to listen to some of the older lessons, which tend to be shorter and easier to learn than the newer lessons. EP022 (very easy to improv with) and EP065 (a simple basic 12 bar blues), for example.

268, I’ve also been toying with this lesson on and off over the last week, if your doing as well as you say you are then my advice is dont change how you structure learning a lesson.
Only other bit of advice I would offer is not to jump from lesson to lesson, you will only confuse and frustrate yourself.
Looking forward to listening to your showcase ....Billy..

Hi Again Phil Steve Sunjamr mentions EP065 well its a great lesson but it also has a second half in EP066 and the two make for a great blues. there is also a little hybrid picking in it.If you are into finger picking 057 and 177 are good targets.
Sunjamr is in New Zealand and Billy and I are UK isn’t it great folk pitching in from across the globe. -

Thanks for the advice will check those early lessons out. Never been a user of any type of forum before. Really great way to meet people and gain valuable advice. Definitely won’t be jumping from lesson to lesson. Aim is to have god full pieces rather than bits a pieces
Thanks again
