This took a lot of time and I just got tired of trying to improve it, so here’s my rough take on Stevie Ray Vaugnan’s beautiful ballad Lenny

Congratulations, Roger, on your discipline to learn the entirety of this absolute classic electric guitar song. Great job with the pick, I know that’s part of the whole project. Tone and timing was terrific. I was surprised to hear the Wind Cries Mary style ending, I din’t know that was part of the song.

I was surprised to hear the Wind Cries Mary style ending, I din’t know that was part of the song.
“Wind Cries Mary style ending” wasn’t part of the song, but I was stumbling at the very end and didn’t want to try yet another recording, so I just threw in that Jimi ending, which seemed to fit.
Honestly this was a huge learning task, probably a month of work, and to me this is just a rough take, but time to move on to the next challenge.

This type of song would be a challenge to memorize. It’s a little like his version of ‘Little Wing’.
There are a ton of individual licks. But my God, you played that well.
Great tone switching between pickups. Nice dynamics and iconic sounding phrasing. Your attack may be a little more subtle than SRV, but it made for a nice smooth song.
That was quite an accomplishment. -

A big congratulations Roger, first, for playing the number so incredibly well and second, for remembering where to go next. I don’t know the piece but it looks quite challenging, love the full chords etc.

An SRV classic to which you did some serious homage there, Roger! Was a lot of fun watching you play this, how fluid your fretting hand was and the varying pick attack as the song went on. If I recall, the song ends on a harmonic note but I thought inserting the Wind Cries Mary lick fit extremely well. So much of Stevie’s playing was influenced by Jimi and you can really hear this influence in the entire song.
Lenny was originally the final song on the “Texas Flood” release. I also have one of those “The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan” CD’s, where Lenny is placed more in the middle of the song list. It is followed up by the scorcher “Scuttlebuttin'”… I kept expecting you to break into this lol
Well done! That must’ve been quite the undertaking to learn all of this, not just the licks themselves but the timing and dynamics, too.

One of my all time favorite SRV tunes Roger. Honestly I can’t imagine trying to learn and memorize all the bits to this, and then to be able to play it for 5 mins is incredible. 👏👏. Is this something you transcribed yourself Roger? I wouldn’t mind trying to tackle a shortened version of it.
I’ve added it to my favorites and will be playing it often.

Your hard work really paid of. That’s a huge undertaking and I thought it sounded wonderful. Your tone definitely had that Stevie Ray quality. Nice work!

Really nice Roger! You captured the heart of the song with your style and tone. I attempted this one years ago but never got too far along. The song was included in a book and cd published by Hal Leonard and guitar work by Wolf Marshall in 1991. Cool at the time but so primative compared to Active Melody. Thanks for sharing!

That is really good and you are truly impressive. You played a difficult tune beautifully. Love your tone. Can you share your rig set up? Are you playing through a Fender blackface reverb type? Thanks for sharing.

thanks John, I’m using a “modeller” – Fractal Axe-FX – amp model is Fender Vibro-Lux with some reverb and some “rotary” to add a little more vibrato because I don’t have a whammy bar so I tried for a little more shimmer in the tone but didn’t really get the effect I wanted.
I’m learning that a Fender model with some reverb will give a real nice full tone, and a little Delay helps but I find delay finicky and tricky to use. Fender and reverb is my main tone. -

Masterful Roger. You have fully integrated into the track. The essential thing is to hit the notes to the point; and you can do it brilliantly. Also interesting is the change of pickups. It just gets more diverse here. You have so many possibilities. I also enjoyed your work on the fingerboard. I like to look something from you.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

I’ve got Lenny playing in the background as I surf the forum tonight, It is one amazing track which I have to say until I heard your rendition of it I had skipped over this one of SRV’s. Its not just SRV’s phrasing that makes this interesting it being able to pick out some if not all of his influences to his playing.
