Hi there, I was hoping somebody might be able to help me on this:
I recorded this month’s challenge on video (Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000) and in Reaper (latest version). Unfortunately, I couldn’t turn the microphone on the camera off. I tried to turn the camera mic off in Windows 10, but to no avail. Stuffing play-doh into the mic slots also didn’t work. As cheap as the camera is, the mic picks up every little noise. Then I found out that Reaper lets you edit videos inside Reaper! I watched several videos on Youtube and followed their instructions. Went on the Reaper support site Cockos and got .dll files that I coied into the Reaper File. Then supposedly you can INSERT the MEDIA FILE (speak: video) into Reaper with two clicks and then start working on it. So much for the theory. Now, please take a look at the attached jpeg: After inserting the media file (i.e. video) in a seperate track, all I get to see is OFFLINE. The black window on the bottom is the video (I went View – Video Window to insert).
Has anyone else also ran into this glitch and managed to solve it? I hope somebody could guide me in the right direction here, because that is one very cool feature of Reaper! While you can’t actually edit much in the video, you can a) mute the video’s tone and b) compfortably synchronize the video with your guitar track! It worked great in the tutorials..
Thanks for any help.

I use Reaper for video and occasionally see that message when I first load a project, but it goes away quickly. Not sure what the problem is, but it might be that the software can’t find the file. If you right click on track in the right hand window (where the waveform would be) and select source properties, it will tell you where it thinks the file is. Double check to make sure that is where the file actually is located.

Thanks Bob, good advice. A window pops up telling me Unknown File Header. No idea what that means, though.

You need to download and install the 64bit vcl or vlc ( which ever it is called) it has to be the 64 bit version or it won’t work..

Hey man, Yeah i’m good thanks. been riding my motorbike in this glorious weather we are having here and strumming my guitar trying to find my singing voice.. I hope you are well and enjoying the summer.
It looks like your Reaper doesn’t know where to look for your video files, try just loading your video to reaper and save it as a project. I tend to save all my videos in the one folder( I mainly convert them to backing tracks)..worth a try?.edit…Sorry man, I should have asked are you using the Licensed version of Reaper. I found that the trial version was a bit stubborn when doing things, I paid the £60 for the home use license and dont seem to have any troubles.

Hi Billy, yes, I have Reaper’s full version. For a month or so. Thanks for your help, I hope it gets me closer to the wanted result. Would be really cool to synchronize my Music videos in Reaper, because I cant think of any other way more accurate and as fast. For now, I have a 2nd best solution for Friday’s contribution. I am a bit short on time cause on Saturday I will be coming into your neighbourhood. Sort of. I will spend a week in Edingburgh/Scotland. I am really excited, cause I’ve never been to Scotland before.

Fantastic. You will enjoy Edinburgh, The castle there dates back to the 12th century and you could spend a whole week just exploring that in itself. I hope you have a great time and this magnificent weather we are having just now continues.

Hey Jiffy, thanks for the link. That’S interesting, because while I did watch a Video from Kenny Gioia, this one seems to be a newer Version. And it’s five minutes longer. Thanks again!

Hi Kevin
As far as Reaper is concerned I always start the project by importing all the media the project requires (backing tracks, Brian’s playing, and Videos) and then ‘save project as’ and tick the boxes ‘create subdirectory for project’ and ‘copy all media into project directory’. Then Reaper (and me!!) knows where the files are. ‘offline’ indicates that it can’t find the file. Hope that helps.
Billy – My wife was in Edinburgh years ago running an Elder Hostel trip for Americans and Van Morrison was doing a concert that evening in the Castle grounds. During the afternoon he did a sound check that could be heard from outside. The sound check was the entire concert from start to finish, not just a few mike and guitar checks.

That would have been something quite epic Martyn, I enjoy a bit of Van the man.

Thanks Martyn, I will check that out. I am pretty sure that I set Reaper up that way, ie it saves every new project with a subdirectory. But worth checking again. Cool story about Van Morrison’s “soundcheck”. That’s dedication! And good for your wife! I am sure it was great.
I live in a small town that also Features a castle from the 11th century. Of course it is much smaller than Edinburgh, but large enough for Knight games, medieval fairs and small live concerts. Great setting for concerts!

Not sure if this might help, but I was trying to do something recently with VLC (cannot remember what), and had to uninstall ver. 3, and go back to ver. 2.2.8 for it to be possible.
Re. Reaper and video, the section on video in this video from The Reaper Blog might be useful (begins at 2.52)
What’s New In Reaper 5.92 – VideoGood luck with this.
I am interested in editing video in Reaper, too, so would be interested to hear about your learnings and discoveries.
The fellow who does The Reaper Blog says that he uses Reaper to make/edit these videos, so it might be useful to consult him about your problem.

Hi drutgat, thanks for your advice. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to go back to the older version of VLC, but if I have to I will just do that. I was away last week (Beautiful Scotland!) and had to catch up on work the last few days, but hope to make some progress on Reaper next week. If I learn something useful, I will share it here with you guys. Thanks for your help so far!

I am using the trial version of Reaper. Are you guys saying you can import your video from a camera into Reaper? I always thought I had to take the music from Reaper and then match it up to the video in a video/movie ptogram. Is there an easier way?

Hi Scotty, yes with the 64bit Reaper you can edit/sinc video and music by downloading and installing the 64bit version of vcl, it has to be the 64bit version, it won’t work on 32bit.
If you go onto the Reaper support site/forum you will find lots of “how to” and trouble shooting guides.
Hope this helps man..Billy..

Thanks Billy, I will check out the help forums. How do I go about downloading the 64 bit VCL? This is great, it’s going to make videos a lot easier to make and post, if I can figure it out!

Go to the VCL( or VLC) I can never get those letters the right way round, The 64bit download is at the very bottom of their Download page.
It is pretty easy to line both up, just do a strum at the start of your record video/reaper and match them up on the time line and then mute the video sound leaving the reaper recording..
best of luck man. Here you go Scotty, this will save you hunting for the ..64bit download..

Hi Tremelow,
You are most welcome.I remembered that the reason I had to go back to using a slightly older build of VLC had to do with being able to create a playlist (of sorts), and that one cannot do that in the way that I wanted in the current version.
So, I hope that this will not have any bearing on what you want to do in Reaper.
Take care.
