I had to think a bit… seems a while since I’ve had a significant lightbulb moment.
I was working on this cover already when Brian announce this month’s challenge. It occurred to me that I was strongly leaning on triads in my arrangement. It made sense to highlight this for my submission.
Hope you enjoy it! Looking forward to learning from all of you this month.

That was a great example of triads Michael. What a wonderful world this is when we all share our lightbulbs together! 😉

A lovely arrangement, Michael. It really shows how triads and their extensions can map out the fretboard. It’s a musical world. 🎶

Just beautiful Michael.
I love that song by Sathcmo.
I did it a while back but not as well as you.
Well done my friend.
You know the triads very well.AndréM

That’s a real crowd pleaser there, Michael. Is there anyone on earth who doesn’t know it? And your arrangement – chock full of triads – is superb, and played to perfection. As for the lightbulbs, I think my bulbs are mostly burned out by now. At least, they don’t come on as often as they used to……

No, they don’t light up as often, but a few are ON and staying lit!

What a Wonderful presentation, Michael!
I mean it, you have such a cool laid back way of playing and seem to be 100% relaxed and not worried about what comes next, not afraid to slow down for more dramatic effect – I really admire that! And you are so right about triads, also one of my many light bulb moments 🙂
Btw, is this YOUR arrangement of the song?? If so, that’s super impressive!

Hi Jola, thank you for your kind words. Yes, this is my arrangement. One of my long-time musical goals is to be able to do my own arrangements, and I can now thanks to Brian. It’s a deep subject though, so always more to learn. Regarding the relaxed approach, that’s a result of recording and listening back a handful of times. I noticed a rushed feel, so put extra focus on relaxing. I guess this is another lightbulb… let chords and notes ring out to their full value. One could over do that and drag, but my tendency is to rush, so a little compensation helps. It was fun to do this, so glad you enjoyed it!

What a wonderful word when you can play the guitar and use triads🙏☺️.
Michael, that was played sooo beautifully.
I love how the triads are moved along the neck. They sound so shiny on the upper register.
Great arrangement, played with great dynamics and feel.Did you create that arrangement all by yourself using triads?😲
PS you have so much progressed!

Hi Denise, thank you! Yes, my arrangement. I got the basic chords online, then worked out the right triad voicings to keep the melody on top. And LOTs of practice to smooth it all out and get some dynamics and feel into it. It was a fun project.

Oh Michael that was absolutely beautiful!

That was great Michael! Amazing how on a lot of the standards the melody follows the chord progression so closely and you can usually find right in the triad or with a simple extension like a 9th or 6th. Related to that I’ve had some lightbulb moments about soloing over them and really just kind of re-stating the melody…I figure someone with a lot more musical knowledge than me spent a good amount of time writing it, I can’t make it better! 😅
Glad we came to the same conclusion with triads this month, we are on similar journeys for sure!!-
June 9, 2025 at 1:44 pm #395639
Thanks Bill. Yeah, this particular song is fairly simple in it’s harmony, at least at the basic level. Major/minor and no more than a 7th here and there. One could dress it up, I suppose, but my arranging skills are not quite there yet. The journey continues!

It is a subtle thing, but should be noted that you go to a lot of trouble to adjust the volume as you play through this song. It was probably one of the best things you could do to underscore the tenderness of this piece. Your observation about the triads was useful, informative and true; but I was most impressed by the cleanness of this piece and your careful attention to touch.
(Also, you reminded me of Sachmo when you starting speaking.)

Hi Paul, thanks for calling out the dynamics on this one. I’ve noticed it in the playing of my guitar heroes, so I’ve been working on it. It really adds to the musicality overall. I appreciate you noticing.

So pretty, Michael and your dynamics were terrific.
I think you’re so steeped in theory there may not be so many new lightbulb moments. I think those moments now come in seeing new ways to use what you already know.

Thanks John! I think you’re right. There will always be more to learn, but one has to dig in wherever we’re at and make some music. I’ve noticed in myself recently much more thought about dynamics and feel… expression… as opposed to learning more about the instrument, and exploring various styles.

Michael, I started singing this along with your playing about ten seconds in…then when I realized I didn’t know all the lyrics by heart…I started humming along:). That was beautifully played and great pointers on the triads. I’m chipping away at them. Great job on this tune! Pap

Oh Michael that is a beautiful acoustic rendition of this well known song and is all based on the premise of triads. The articulation of how you connect these triads with pathways is impressive. I would gratefully receive a lesson on this composition on how to use triads.

A superb submission Michael, that was so wonderfully played throughout and a fabulous example of using triads. What was even more impressive, it was your own arrangement.
