My dear AMers – ever since I threatened to inflict my voice on y’all, I’ve been wondering – if I were to pluck up the courage to sing, what song would it be?
Well, if it weren’t for the Pandemic, we would be on our honeymoon right now, touring the Scottish Mainland and Islands! The lockdown restrictions in both England and Scotland have, to say the least, made it difficult to book anything, and many places are still closed, so we’ve postponed this trip to next year.
However, with Scottish themes in mind: Once upon a moonbeam, there was this very pretty Traditional Scottish Ballad – Will Ye Go Lassie Go (sometimes called ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’).
So, here’s my attempt at ruining a perfectly lovely song, that has stood the test of time – until now . 🥴🤣
Best wishes all ❤️

Thank you, Billy! Don’t worry about the verses, the chorus though is just a perfect drinking song 😂🎶👍

Mark, how I love this Ballad! (Reminds me of my student year in York when I was in love with an English guy)
Your warm deep voice matches perfectly to this song, and you’re singing with much feeling. Great fingerstyle playing.
I liked listening.
DenisePS: you seem to have sunny weather up North haha.

Bless you, Denise!
I don’t often let my natural voice show itself. My wife says I usually hide it behind a stolen voice, but that sounds unnatural and forced – I’ve always been self conscious of my voice 😂
My first few takes were just mumbles, so I deliberately placed the mic above me to make me project – you can see me raising my head, and it did help!
Yes, we’ve got a bit of a heatwave here at the moment, so I can justify the hat-n-shades 😎 My challenge submission this month was recorded when it was pouring with rain, it was too dark for shades that day 😂
Best wishes to you ❤️

Thanks Bob – I was pretty nervous to begin with, mumbling and my voice was quivering 🥴
But when you start saying to yourself, “What did you say, speak up!” You know something has to change 😂
I think your singing likely got stronger the more you posted your voice 🎶
Best regards buddy, stay safe 😎

Well I totally enjoyed that, Mark. Well played and well sung. Strangely enough, even though I’ve never been to Scotland, for some reason I recognize the tune. Maybe I heard it in a movie. And here in New Zealand we have the same problem with booking holidays: Since Kiwis are also stuck in NZ, they are forced to holiday in this country. As a result, all the hotels and tourist venues are thriving like never before, and it’s almost impossible to get a booking anywhere. It makes me wonder why we even need tourists.

Thanks Steve!
I must say, I’d much rather be stuck in NZ right now – never been there, though my wife has and always says it’s a totally magical place. She really wants to take me back there!
Do get to Scotland, if you get the chance. It’s a wonderful place and great people!
Locals and police from Fort Augustus really took care of me when I had a bad motorcycle accident at Viewpoint Glengary, on the way back from the Isle of Skye in 1990 – though I made the Copper laugh when I said, “I don’t mind waiting for a helicopter, rather than a normal ambulance!” – typical Biker 😂
Many years later, we had a large Goldwing bike rally in Kelso. The locals loved us – I think the thousands of us boosted their economy somewhat (we may have drunk the place dry) 😂 A dear old lady caught me outside her house in the town, and insisted I took her phone number in case we needed to use her facilities – to a strange biker she’d never met before! The town begged us to come back, which we did a few years later 😊
Lovely people!

It is probably one of the most recorded songs in the world Steve, versions from the likes of thin lizzy, van morrison, Dylan, rod stewart to mame but a few.So could possibly be why it is familiar to you.

Sung with great feeling Mark. I like your deep voice and kudos for putting it all out there by showcasing your vocals. I enjoyed your version and your finger style accompaniment suited the song perfectly. Hope your trip goes ahead sooner rather than later. Keep safe and all the best!

Thanks Garry! We’re trying to satisfy our wanderlust with day-trips at the moment. Even many pubs are insisting on pre-bookings still, even though lockdown has largely been lifted here – oh well, better safe than sorry!
Best wishes and stay safe 😎

Well done Mark. You did this lovely ballad justice. Your vocals fit this style and the finger style playing was crisp. Maybe one of these days I’ll have the nerve to sing.

Thanks Alan – it did take some courage, I must admit! It’s one thing to show playing the guitar, showing my voice is whole other level 😂😎

Beautiful old song, Mark. I don’t even know that Thin Lizzy sang it, have to recheck it. Very nice performance.

You’ll find it on their Black Rose, Rock legend Album(1979?) Meelis

Thanks Meelis. No, I didn’t know that one either!
The best version I’ve heard was in Belfast, during a live recording of a radio show, “Folk Club”. Kate & Anna McGarrigle sang this – a haunting performance!

I have to admit that after you’re introduction I was bracing myself 😬 😅. But that was a marvellous performance! Heartfelt and flawlessly supported by your finger style playing. Your voice was ideal for this song.
Coincidentally we were watching a film “wild mountain thyme” the other week based in Ireland and this song obviously featured quite strongly!-
July 23, 2021 at 5:32 am #262567
Thanks Andy!
I didn’t know about that film – I’ll definitely check it out!
We’ve been hooked on local, rural, British film stories recently. If you get the chance, check out “The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Society” – showing on Netflix here in the U.K. It’s simply wonderful! 👍

Yep, that’s the one – staring Lily James and two of our national treasures: Dame Penelope Wilton and Sir Tom Courtenay.
For anyone who hasn’t seen it: grab a bottle of wine, cuddle up to your favourite person, dog, cat or pig, and prepare to enjoy a lovely film! 🎥+🍷🥂🍹🥃

Mark, you’d better spend your honeymoon here in beautiful Switzerland! If you are vaccinated you are welcome haha.
OK, we don’t have Whiskey but good beer and wine, mountains where you can do lots of hikes, beautiful lakes without monsters, the best chocolate and cheese in the world..and nice people.

Oh, Denise, put the kettle on – we’re on our way! 🥰
Many years ago, we had a whirlwind trip on our bikes, including Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland – but only saw a tiny bit of Austria and Switzerland (didn’t even get the chance to stay overnight).
The aim was to do a mammoth tour, touching as many countries as we could in 3 weeks. On reflection, it was a shame, as we wanted to investigate more – it looked so beautiful!
I’d love to do a Swiss Railway journey, for a couple of weeks. That way I could enjoy the scenery without having to keep an eye on the road all the time 😎
Best wishes ❤️

Mark, yes we actually have a good railway network. With the Glacier Express (our tourist luxury train haha) you can enjoy magnficent views of mountains and gorges during a train ride. It’s expensive though. But I’d highly recommend you to do pass rides by motorbike! Lots of fun curves. And my husband can be your bike guide, he’s an expert.

My dearest Mark ♥💖❤
Wasn’t I right last time when I kept asking you to sing for us in spite of your comment about your grandchildren?🤣🤣🤣”Of course you were right Helen!!!!I just needed some encouragement!!!!”
I LOVED IT!!!I will admit that I didn’t know the song but it really touched my heart!I mentally traveled with you to Scotland (I’ve been to Edinburgh only)and of course I will search it now ,so please tell me which versions i should listen to!(apart from yours being number 1 I guess!!!!)
I love singing Mark!isn’t it liberating to let yourself go and express your emotions in this wonderful, deep voice of yours?Keep on singing my friend! It brings joy!!!!!!😍😍😍 -
July 23, 2021 at 9:00 am #262576
Well, okay: Yes, of course you were right Helen!!!! 😂😂🥰🥰
To tell the truth, I was going to PM you, to warn you that I was going to send any complaints straight on to you as you had practically begged me to sing 🎤😂😂😂
I have recorded a commentary with this month’s challenge. So, as I had the mic already out, I started thinking, “Should I obey Helen’s command and just go for a song?” – so there you go, it may take me a while but I’m always obedient 😇😇😇😂😂😂😍😍😍
I do love singing and often sing and leap around to my “Feel Good” music mix – the grandkids sometimes join in too (I’m sure they think I’m just crazy 😜)
My favourite versions of this song are by:
Benjamin Hunter
Cameron Maudsley
The Byrds
Emmylou Harris, Rufus Wainwright, Dick Gaughan and Kate & Anna McGarrigleI wish I could find a recording of Kate & Anna’s live recording of this that I saw, but it’s not available. The other song I saw them do was, “Heart Like A Wheel” – give it a listen if you don’t know it! I’m an old softie, and I need some Kleenex near me whenever I play this one 😎
Best wishes and thanks again! ❤️

I’m surprised you don’t have the Corries on your list Mark, they kinda broke in to main stream music with their version which makes it a fav for many, have a listen if you’ve not heard the Corries before.

Billy – thank you so, so much for this! 👍👍👍
I’d mentioned that this was a perfect drinking song – well, this was the recording that I remembered seeing many years ago! I just couldn’t remember who’d done it.
In my memory, there were lots of jugs of ale 🍺 and wee drams being downed on the recording – but that just shows where my priorities lay 😂😂
Thanks again my friend – great find! 😎

Nice job on this Mark. I’ve heard an instrumental guitar version of this titled ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ by Ed Gerhard. Pretty song.

Oh dear Mark I have to tell you this:I utubed the song with the Corries(fantastic!)and then the next song that played was Wild Rover!!!!!which I was stunned to hear because it brought me back wonderful memories from exactly 30 years ago in summer when as undergraduate students of the English Department of Athens,we went to the university of Lancaster for a summer course! Two fantastic teachers there ,Nelson and Terry,(I still remember them with great fondness)❤❤❤played the guitar and sang songs! So they taught us this one and we had so much fun!Imagine 200 Greek students singing loudly the chorus No,nay, never…
So,if you take requests, that’s the one I would love to hear!😍😍😍😍😍-
July 24, 2021 at 7:17 am #262679
Oh, Helen – I think, for that one, I’d need about 200 drunken Greeks, then maybe we’ve got a deal 🍺🍺🍺😂😂😂
A group of us were in Germany – I think it was Heidelberg – and visited a Bierkeller. The locals were singing this song, and banging their Bierug or Beer Steins hard on the tables – the beer was going everywhere 😂😂😂
Great times ❤️
