I get that every time I start one of these lessons, especially when I realize that I cannot near keep up with the “slow” – but usually after a five days I can sort of keep up, although for the harder ones no. One lesson took me three days just to get the strum pattern right! Learning an instrument is not easy but it is fun – my issue is finding people my age who are at my level.

No, you are not alone. Some days I just can’t seek to find it, other times it all seems to come together. When I can’t find it, either I take a step back or I get back to basics. If you have the ability to play along with a jam track (or better yet, create your own), this can boost your confidence and inspire you.
What seems to be some of the challenges you are facing?

Days? Try weeks. Months. Years!
But it’s normal to hit plateaus, where you feel you’re not making progress. Sometimes it’s just a matter of patience (and practice).
It also depends on your age. Young people learn much much faster. Older brains take much longer. It really helps if you’ve played a bit of guitar when you were a teenager — your brain will remember this. Otherwise, trying to teach the brain a completely new skill when it’s older requires a lot more time and effort.
I think it helps to set a goal — maybe there’s an open house near you? Set a goal of playing a song or two for some future time and work toward that. Find a couple of buddies to play with — nothing makes you progress faster than playing with other people.
I accidentally fell into playing banjo in a new group I’m in… I had to learn how to play quickly because we already had a gig lined up… and I did!

please tell me I am not alone!!!!!Nope, You are not alone here @andycodling. I have just had a few months off guitar because it just felt like a never ending cycle of no improvement, I think another thing that doesn’t help either and that is when you see others turn out responses to lessons 10 a penny and we struggle to master one..
Anyway Andy, go back a couple of steps instead to where you can feel improvement and enjoyment, Enjoyment is more important here I feel cos if you dont have that, then you dont really have anything...Billy..

Sage advice, Billy- if you aren’t having fun doing this, it isn’t worth doing. Bring the fun back into it and your capacity to learn/improve will increase exponentially.

Andy, you are definitely not alone! My question is what are you currently working on right now that is making you so disheartened at the moment?
You might try slowing it down or trying something on a lighter gradient. That what I do when I feel like I can’t make progress on something.
Don’t give up! We all feel discouraged at times. You did the right thing by posting on the forum.
I think almost every person on here has experienced what you are going on here. What can we do to help you?

The Master has failed more times than the beginner has tried.

Something I try “not too often”, but it works for me, is to put a backing track on and get the feel/swing/vibe of the music and hit them strings gently. I say gently because when you are playing in a relax mood, maybe the spiritual music connection comes to you more gracefully, and you actually feel there is a home in your heart for your music guitar playing. And maybe, that is all that matters, “the connection” of your soul and your guitar playing.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

All good advice and good questions. Find something you really want to play and learn a little part of it. Then a little more. Piggybacking on others’ questions, is there a song you want to play?
Thank you, Frettin’ Freddie, good one!

Hey guys thanks for the encouragement and advice good to know im not alone, I have been working on Brians slow BB king solo and tonight I came back and tried again and it kind of fell into place tonight after getting so frustrated yesterday, I am not long into serious practicing but I am on a camp in Iraq so I get to practice at least two hours a night as there is nothing else to do, I have also found an American guy in Thailand( where I live now)called Gypsy Lou who is giving me blues lessons and he is really encouraging and enthusiastic. I have put a lot of hours in this month and I can definitely say I have improved and hope that the tutor notices the difference.
Got to say I could not be more impressed with this site and the people on here full of advice and encouragement thank you very much guys -

If I get bummed out because I feel it’s taking me too long to learn a lesson, I choose a microlesson and learn it. 5 minutes later I’ve learned something and my skill level has ramped up a notch. It’s an increment I can clearly see.

I do the same sunjamr just downloaded the tabs for a bunch of micro lessons. I also like how Brian is doing micro lessons that help with some of the main lessons.

IF it was easy, everyone would be a guitar player. Some may learn faster than other, but I come to the conclusion that practice is the secret and there is no short cut. What I have found is that sometimes if I hit a wall, I leave that lesson alone for a bit, and carry on learning other things. I go back to it a few weeks later, and amazingly enough I have progressed by learning other things. I really believe that every single thing you learn will come good one day. I share you frustration brother, because sometimes I see people playing and they make it look so easy that it’s really disheartening. Take driving a car for example, when i get in my car i don’t even think about it, i just drive, my daughter passed her test last year and I could see how nervous she was, and it reminded me that it was me 30 odd years ago, but that’s just it, practice makes it perfect
