ParticipantWell, with some courage, I post this cover of Walking Blues, Eric Clapton version.
It’s been a while since I played slide guitar and I started again to study this song, that in the past I’ve always just noodling around and humming a bit. I don’t own a resonator, so when I play slide I use my old acoustic guitar. For this song I use a F# open tune instead of the regular G, to try to fit better to my voice.
I realize now that playing and singing properly this song (coordinate together both things) is very hard! Well, for me there is the additional twist that I have to sing in a foreign language and focus on pronouncing lyrics as better as I can.
I recorded the song several times and there was always some mistakes of all kinds (singing, words, and of course playing). Eventually I decided to post the very first one that is anyway the best. I know it’s very hard to listen to the umpteenth cover of this song (and there are a ton of excellent renditions around), but if you happen to listen to it, let me know, if you want, what you think.Guido - Italy

ParticipantGuido, that was just fabulous, your quality threshold is set quite high as there were no discernible errors that showed up. Your performance was certainly worthy of an Open Mic Session anywhere and thoroughly enjoyable, thank you for posting.

A great performance. I really liked your acoustic fingerstyle slide playing. Very well done! You should post some more of your slide playing…

Well, I play slide only with some old Delta Blues songs like this one, always noodling around a bit. But, like with this one, may be in future I’ll try to learn a couple of songs properly and will post them.Guido - Italy

ParticipantAll I can say is that was a really professional sounding recording. Absolutely loved that steelly guitar sound and your bluesy voice – brilliant!

ParticipantThank you very much for your compliments! For recording, I used a very simple H2N Zoom Handy Recorder. After many experiments, I found that this little thing is the best for capture acoustic guitar stand-alone or voice and acoustic guitar together, much better that the condenser mic that I bought recently (much more expensive – may be my audio interface is not enough good, I don’t know). In post production, with Audacity, I just add a bit of compression and reverb.

ParticipantExcellent performance, Guido! Your slide playing sounded fantastic, I think slide sounds great on an acoustic guitar, you don’t necessarily need a resonator for that. I’m always amazed at singers who can sing and play awesome guitar at the same time. And those who sing seem to learn playing very fast, too. Well – well done, bravo!

ParticipantThank you very much for your kind appreciation, JoLa! Well, when I started to play, many years ago, I began because I wanted to play and sing songs. So it’s just what I’ve been always doing. But now I’m trying to improve as a player (well, as a “singer” I should improve too but unfortunately I don’t have time to practice and I’m also afraid that my neighbours will call the police if I sing too often, so when I have some inspiration I just grab my guitar and I sing!)

ParticipantWow! Guido, that was really good….some of the best slide playing I’ve heard here on the forum. Is it possible that Italians are better at slide guitar than other people? I know that a guy called Roberto Luti has been playing for a long time with the Playing For Change performances and has gone from a street musician to a famous slide guitar performer. He even has a slide guitar tutorial:

ParticipantThanks Steve! Very nice comment! Well, I don’t know if italians are the best slide players, actually there are many very good players everywere in the world. But for sure this guy (that I didn’t know before) is a very good player indeed and his video (I had a quick look) seems to be a great source of inspiration! And his old resonator (may be an old National Steel?) looks and sounds just fantastic!

ParticipantI think you did a great job for it ain’t that easy to sing and playing at the same time (impossibile to me let alone sing in English lol). Your slide playing is getting really expressive.
Great job in the production too. Can’t imagine how was difficult was blend voice and high treble of guitar with the slide
Thanks for sharing it

ParticipantNice job on this Guido. I like your slide work and the blusey, throaty vocals. Singing in another language has to be tough. I know a song in Italian though.

ParticipantGuido. For me personally this is your best post. Thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. Accurate rendition re: slide arrangement from Clapton and your vocals are great also. The Unplugged Album of Clapton’s has so many brilliant songs. You’ve definitely done this one justice big time. Don’t stress about singing in another language. You’re a genius in my eyes. Us Aussies can only speak the one language. Keep up the great performances. All the best!

ParticipantThanks Garry! I was hesitant to post this song, but now I see that has been receveid very positevely by other members!
About singing, I’m quite used to sing in english, but I found this song, despite having only three short verses, very challenging for its internal rythm (I mean, it’s easier to sing a plain country song then a blues song for me).
About Eric Clapton and his Unplugged Album, well, he was the man who made me discover Robert Johnson and old blues in general!Guido - Italy

ModeratorYou slide playing is like figuring out magic. Some can do magic and you are one of them.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

ParticipantGuido you absolutely crushed that.
Son house is a big influence on Jack White ( one of my favourite artists ) and I have tried and failed many times to get the sound you got there so I know the skill involved and you made it look effortless.
I would definitely like to see more of these covers from you!
You’re vocal performance was spot on also.
Have a huge well done and as much respect.
Best,
Liam.

ParticipantWow Gudio…I think that is amazing. With me it is also often so when I record myself that I am also once much more nervous and then mistakes creep in. Sometimes I think about not making mistakes and then of course it happens. But with time and repeated practice, it should go away.
I also like your voice – it has a real bluesy or rusty quality. And I mean that in a thoroughly positive way. I can well imagine that you can still get out a few percent with vocal practice. But at the end of the day, it’s the fun and dedication that counts.
Your contribution is great! All the best
