        Hi Jammers,

I’ve been meditating on the idea of making some video projects, either by me or others. The issue I’m running into is that video files are much larger than audio files, so how do we collect individual files and combine them into a collaboration? Box.com has a 10 GB storage max, and a 250 Mb upload max for the free individual plan. The next plan up gives you 100 GB storage and max 5 GB upload, but it costs $11.50/mo. Most of my videos are between 350 – 600 Mb, so I wouldn’t even be able to upload them on a Box.com free plan. Dropbox gives you only 2 GB storage on their free plan, but for $10/mo, you get 2000 GB (wow!) storage. Google Drive gives you 15 GB for free, or 100 GB for $2/mo, which makes it the cheapest option.

Another option would be to have each participant upload their video clip to Youtube, then the project coordinator would have to download each video in MP4 format and combine them into one video. That would be possible, but fairly time-consuming for everyone involved. Plus Youtube does things to compress the file size, meaning there would be some loss of video and audio quality, especially after uploading the same file twice.

Any thoughts or ideas on this issue? Right now I’m leaning toward just collecting photos from each participant, which can be shared on our very own AM Private Message format. Or we could just exchange email addresses and send photos that way. You can make a fairly interesting video just by using photos.

Hope no one minds me chipping in here, my thinking here is that
Audio loss wouldn’t be a problem Steve, I’m taking it that video audio would still be replaced by the guitar wav files you guys are already sharing.
Still possibly quite a big editing exercise though, not impossible but time consuming imho.

Quick edit, would you guys be better asking for a sticky or a subsection so that all your planning posts and questions are not lost in amongst the general forum threads?.

Like Billy, as a non participant so far, I don’t think videos offer anything for the jam quest save make it a bigger project and perhaps onerous for some who maybe can play but are not equipped to make video or do not have the inclination. Folk are really here to play guitar and sure its fine to see what people play and learn from the technique etc but fancy video is a pretty superfluous to my way of thinking. I believe your comment about a picture of who is playing what at what time all synchronized is far more relevant or even a description of the kit in use at that part of the track would be educational. And as you point out that can readily be done by most without being video editors and within the file size of the AM arrangements.

Here’s the scenario that made me think about some kind of video: Let’s say some friends pop over for dinner one night, and I say “Hey, want to hear something cool?”. So I bring out my laptop and click on the final AMJammers version of EP306 which I downloaded from Box.com, and we listen to it. I would not be able to say “Here’s where WBlues comes in – he’s from Germany” or “Here’s where Craig comes in – he’s an Aussie guy who mixed it all”.

Here’s the scenario it could be: We all sit down in front of my big screen TV with awesome sound system, I go to Youtube and play EP306 by AMJammers. When WBlues starts playing, his name and a photo appear, and maybe some photos of his neighborhood or city or country. Same for each player. That video would take me about half and hour to make. It’s about being able to recognize who’s playing when.

I am pasting my reply from another post…

                Steve and everyone…
I thought about it and as much as I enjoy seeing others play, I think putting the videos together is too much of a task for just jams and I think it would take some fun away from it. Also, as Craig noted, having to shoot a video could discourage many from participating.

Yes, it would be nice to have a group video eventually but maybe for a bigger project, like maybe collectively writing and performing a song..?

I think we can put together really nice videos with just photos of each player and post it here at Active Melody under Showcase Your Playing. Maybe if there’s many of them over time, they may get their own Forum section…? We would rotate video creators and the creator would just post it on their Youtube or Vimeo channel. I understand, Steve, you’re making the video of EP306 jam, I can do the next one (EP078) and so on….
And I think we could just upload our photos to our AM Jammers Box where we upload the audio tracks?

Well, those are my ideas. The main idea is to keep is simple and fun. What do you think?

From an outsiders point of view knowing who is actually playing is perhaps the most relevant point and so it would make life simple for a basic video composition just to sync the details of the participants as they play their part. that way a stock picture or two from each would suffice and keep all up to date with who is making the contribution. From a video production point of view it would amount to more of a timed slide show than video and would be relatively light on file size. Might that make the goal for you?

                    Hey everyone,

I agree with JoLa. I like the idea of creating a video with some photos. Group video maybe for upcoming jams. That would be nice, but means a lot of more work for everyone.

I think that whomever has the capability, resources and willingness to produce a video should. That being said, I am ok just doing audio and or sending in pics for now. Personally, I would rather spend my time playing versus producing. Making audio and video is fun but again the ends has to justify the means. This is something we should consider and not rule out. Maybe limiting the number of participants per jam is a good idea. That way there would be more available storage space and shorter productions. Honestly, people lose interest after about 3 minutes especially with extended jams. Rather than doing one big project, how about 4 separate jams with 3 players each. I think there would be more room for files on box.com and the jams would be 3-4 minutes, thus holding listeners interest. Just my two cents.

                      Be well,

                      John

OK then, we are all thinking along the same lines. I have started on a video for the EP306 jam, but I’m waiting on a few more photos. Watch this space…
