Robert Johnson pretty much invented blues with a cheap acoustic guitar.
Does anyone really need all this stuff?

No we Don’t, this is what makes making music complicated, it’s well past time that guitaring got back to basics and we enjoyed just how versatile this instrument is..imho of course.

I love how, as if there aren’t enough guitars in there, there’s a miniature guitar replica on one of the Marshall stacks. That’s more Marshalls than a Hendrix concert!

That’s bizarre. Could it be that it’s just a storage room, and the owner hauls that stuff around to different gigs? I’m not the only person who has asked the question why do we even need amps anymore. Even when I practice or jam with my friends, I mainly just play through my RKR Rokit studio monitors. It’s like the zen koan: If a tree falls over in a forest and no one is around, does it make a noise?

jajaja, yes, it is a bit too much, but you know? it is difficult to play guitar and don’t fall in love with the guitar it self. I “only” have 4 guitars (1 bass guitar, 2 acoustic and 1 electric) and for my wife that’s the limit, but almost anytime I see a nice guitar I feel the desire hanging around my brain.

I’m always amazed when watching a Tim Pierce video at his studio. Way too much for me but for a studio musician not at all. Do a search on his Grammy Awards show warm up. Hey Rafael, I found out a long time ago it’s easier to buy a fishing rod without attracting the wife”s attention. So yeah, I can outfit a charter boat but not a concert. 🙂

Way over the top. I agree that I have guitar envy and every time I pass a music shop I see at least three guitars I suddenly want (?). I believe that to get the sound you want you need only about 4 effects boxes.
Of course the rich boys accumulate numerous guitars. A few years ago Eric Clapton sold 100 of his guitars. I once saw a video of Vince Gill’s HUGE music room – he must have about 100 guitars in there !!! Brian JH

FYI. Brian bought the Gibson Byrdland Custom from Clapton’s collection. Video available on this site.

All those Marshall amps and you don’t have one of these.

Great fridge, filled with the most bland mass-produced beer on the planet.

Mance Lipscomb, an early Texas blues guitarist played with cheap homemade guitar and the back side of a folding pocket knife wedged between his fingers for a slide. This amazed Muddy Waters and amazes me too. Apparently he stuck with the same equipment throughout his life. Anyway, I think if you can afford it and you got it and you want it and you love it – more power to you. What a candy store!

I have been through this to some degree, having owned many guitars (and pedals, etc.) over the years. In hindsight, I think I made the same mistake a lot of guitar players make: I thought the right guitar would be my key to becoming a better musicians. Didn’t happen. On the other end of the spectrum, there are truly great players who just love guitars and want to own as many as they can. These days the minimalist approach appeals more to me.

I suspect that long before they get to this state of excess it’s about the gear not the music for such people.

I have too many guitars (8), and just started buying pedals. While I don’t need most of it, and i agree that less is more and the sound is in your brain and fingers, I find a new toy can inspire me to pick up a guitar more often. I know I shouldn’t need that incentive, but I tend to be a bit too passive in my guitar playing. By the way, Brian is proving to be more inspiring to me than the hardware toys. He always seems to come up with something I really want to learn.
Still learning after all these years

Buying stuff makes people feel good. On the other hand, practice is often frustrating. So we buy stuff.
