Nicely done John. I didn’t know Tony Rice had passed either. I’m a big fan of his playing and particularly like his version of ‘Freeborn Man’. I just discovered a young guy who may carry on some of Tony’s work. Check this guy out.

John,I use to play bluegrass yrs ago,but I can’t do that speed flat picking any longer! Yes,I practice just about every day,but I don’t post,as I just get too nervous!lol I have recently started to listen to Van Morrison music as his three chords are easy to follow, and he has a laid back style!! At 77yrs old,I have to ration my time to less strenuous things!!……….Sal

okay Sal cool I read you Van Morrison i is cool,, yeah man, i’m only doing this beause right now find it so cool.. I am doing things more specific as with these fiddle tunes.. also realizing how to use the right size mm pick for the gauge strings.. this morning , I realized a medium maybe .88mm is the best for 11s or 12s on my acoustics..I am really studing and comparing both technique and hardware.. okay Sal,, will post something soon..been practicing much lately too!

yes richard, so many like him ..i just want to give it a go,,, i’m really not into speed as much because i honestly believe it’s non melodic,,.. like shedding.. it doesn’t get me excited,, good to try for exercise but it’s not my cup a tea even though I try bit of shredding /consecutive/hybrid etc it(for exercise)
I rather play the stuff here Brian teaches, not too fast but more interesting mix of both with cool melodic rhythms
I like bluegrass classics,, think it’s amazing too.. i am not into shredding like the younger folks are into unless i really want to learn a specific favorite cover tune.. I guess what I mean generally I have a slower guitar metabolism lol.. but it’s all good if it works! ty man enjoy!

I agree with you there John, and I think this guy is just showing off. But he sure has the skills to play any bluegrass tune.
I’m not into the shredding thing either. But bluegrass isn’t complex or difficult technically, it’s just mostly fast. Masters with a flat pick. I love the music and the fact that every musician in the band gets a solo. And they are all fast.
There is something very natural and organic about all those acoustic instruments played so well. -

Actually Richard, blue grass flat picking imho, is playing mostly open chords first position,, most of it isn’t bends at all.. just quick alternating flatpicking and it is very fundamemtal for beginners or folks wanting to learn more on the entire fretboard..
for me ,it is important because I learned so much and yet like Tont Rice (rip) he knew jazz inside out,, but he stayed well as a blue grass flatpicker..
I can highbred pick i can finger pick i hate shredding excercises for now because it annoys me,, but alternating lick the bestbluegrass players intrigues me and it is actually a lot of fun..okay man enjoy..going icefishing this weekend(probably last ice for the year lol
