I’ve gone back to LEG009 Turnarounds are the transfers between the 12 bars of a 12 bar blues to the next 12 bars. What I can’t figure out is when to play a turnaround: between bar 12 and bar 1 or does is replace the 12 th bar? Thanks anyone for a reply!!

I’ve just watched the opening segment of the video Erik and from what I can figure out you play the 12 bars then the turnaround and back to the 1st bar again

Erik,
The turnaround typically occupies bars 11 and 12 of the 12 bar blues. The ones in the lesson you mentioned go from an E chord to the B7 chord. I think the B7 is coming on beat 3 of the 12th bar, but I might be wrong. Best way to get a feel for this is to listen to some blues featuring guitar. You’ll hear a variety of turnarounds.
Hope that helps.

Erik,
The 12 bar is I-I-I-I, IV-IV-I-I, V-IV-I-V each chord representing a bar of 4 beats.
The turnaround starts on bar 11 when you return to the I chord.
Typically, the first beat of bar 11 is used to strum the I chord, the rest of the turnaround starts on beat 2 and descends on beat 2, 3, 4 back to the I chord on beat 1 of bar 12. Beats 2,3,4 of bar 12 (or the and of 2, 3, 4) walk back up to the V chord. Hope that helps.

I guess the short answer is, it does replace bar 12 as the 12 bar sequence has to include the turnaround, then the 12 bar sequence starts again.

A lot of people think of the turnaround as the last 4 bars—I do, bars 9 to 12.
In a 12-bar blues that’s most often:
V • IV • I • V7 or V • IV • I • IDon D.

Erik,
I agree with Don D. that in the big picture bars 9-12 are often considered the turnaround. But in the context of the lesson you referenced, think bars 11 and 12.

That’s true, Bob, thanks, I was generalizing. I didn’t listen to LEG009 before commenting, just wanted to put it in context, but I should have specified that.
