Since my last showcase for the July challenge I have been working on not just my playing but my recording levels too. This is just a practise session covering part 1 of 004, I still need a lot of work on the pull off and double note harmonic playing.
It is coming along nicely I think…
Recorded straight to Reaper, Guitar rig Jazz amp and played on Mr Ping…...Billy..

This is coming along just great. The timing was a bit pedantic at the very start but it was improving all the way along and you absolutely nailed the final section. Great stuff! So just that run from the 4th string 12nd fret to crack now.
The recording is excellent and I love the fade out at the end! Where did you learn that little trick?Martyn the knees

The fading can be done on Reaper. Maybe Billy will come along and give an example of how it is done.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Billy, that sounded really good. Absolutely, your best posting. Very smooth and soothing. I heard some nice vibrato at 1:52. Great signs of progress.

If you imagine you riding on your new bike and the joy you are having, well, much joy to hear your posting on that lesson. Same joy.

Thank you all very much… fadeout came as a tip from a gentleman in France, maybe you recognise him for this picture?
Another fun lesson which is letting me experiment on all sorts of levels. Recording, vibrato and expression to name but a few…part 2 is where I get to push my boundary, I am having fun again. I cant stress enough just how important this is to my learning process and I hope it is beginning to show in my playing....Billy..

Really nice Billy. Your guitar started to sing there in the end. As you develop your vibrato, those longer notes will get better and better. I worked on EP004 some on Wednesday, and EP006 some this morning. Plan to look at EP005 (Jazz solo pt 2, up an octave) this afternoon. Wish me luck.

You’ve made a great progress in your playing. The fluidity is coming along quickly that hard graft slog of first year or so of start up practice is way behind and the rewards are being reaped right here. Well done.

Thanks John, I did nickname it “elevator music”, but that didn’t do it and justice. It really is an enjoyable song to play and I honestly cant wait to get started on 005 or part two as it is known as in these here parts.

JohnStratJohn, Thank you for the kind words. I got to frustrations end at the beginning of the year mainly because I was taking on things I just wasn’t ready for and that hindered my learning ability because I wasn’t having any fun and I certainly wasn’t seeing any progress to my playing while others were moving on by leaps and bounds.
I am glad that others can hear the progress my playing is making. As I have said 100 times or more now, I am having fun and that is making a huge difference to not only how I now view a lesson but to how much time and effort I will now put into a lesson...Billy..

Very impressive playing Billy, and excellent recording. It’s great to see you’re getting a buzz out of playing again, and the enjoyment is certainly showing in your playing.
Well done.

Billy,
That was some really nice playing. Love the guitar tone which seemed to fit the piece perfectly. I’ll have to add this one to my list of lessons to work on.

Hey Billy, that was really nice! And pictures back to you, I’m strolling with my parents around Kiddieland (an amusement part), the smell of cotton candy and the burnt fuel of the two little trains (one coal-burning, one diesel) and the gasoline of the tractors wafts through the air that also carries the screams of the children on the “scary” rides and the clacking of wheels on tracks—most of all what I was picturing though were the whirling fluorescent lights covered in the particolored gels on the sides of the rides and buildings—no kidding. Good job!

RickThanks Rick, I think I have sorted out what should be at which level now, I think before I was trying to have everything as a blend. You guys were right though, it just wasn’t correct..

Just my Squier Strat Bob, I used a digital amp in my DAW so didnt check out what the settings were and the only thing I adjusted was to switch it to stereoHey Billy, that was really nice! Hey, thanks Don. I enjoy it so much when you guys paint me a picture with your playing, I feel very honoured by your comments..

It’s really apparent you’ve been listening and practicing. If you put in more time, you’d get better results unless that would mean you’d hit that dreaded wall.
That kind of music does that (I’d say it’s kind of jazzy, kind of Nino Rota-esque). I wish I could describe what I saw better. Although I’m at work, it’s really slow today and I’m pretty relaxed, much more relaxed and I’d be falling asleep (typical, could have really used this time earlier in the week). Your music is really evocative of the lights attached to the sides of the moving rides, yellow, purple, red, blue, green, once I started seeing those, everything else just flowed from there. There’s a particular angle I usually see this from too, above my left shoulder (it’s based on a few memories from my childhood).

Nicely done Billy! I know exactly where you’re coming from regarding, feeling like ‘throwing in the towel’, I’m there right now! All this Learning definitely has peaks and troughs and seeing or hearing other members reaching a goal really does help.

Mike. This is the point where I took some time out from doing AM lessons and went back to strumming some tunes on an acoustic, it took me about 5 months before I felt like giving it another go. Found a lesson or two that I liked and picked the easiest one and went back to basics, no improvs nothing fancy. Just a lesson and the backing track and just played. This all coinsided with a monthly challenge so it was good to do the song raw and get feed back from all on forum. We have to play for enjoyment, it is important otherwise if it is a trudge then we wont want to plug a guitar in or take an acoustic out its case… fingers crossed you find the fun again kiddo..

Billy, That was awesome on playing that and you recording and mixing was very good also. I want to thank you and so many on AM for inspiring me because I am the type that needs inspiration to get the perspiration going in me. Once I have a goal I am bound and determined to get it done. Great job and thanks,

WilfriedWow, Wilfried that is high praise right enough, to say I am overwhelmed is something of an understatement. Guitarists like yourself, Don, Charjo, Sunburst, Blugene and all the others too numerous to mention by name whom I look up to on the forum and have as my benchmarks..I am just gobsmacked, thank you all..
