Thanks Billy, I’ve watched the first half so far, brings back many memories for me. Aged 17 I was right in the middle of it all, learning the latest release during the week and playing it on stage at the weekend. Seems a lifetime ago now …..cheers.

Billy,
I enjoyed that. The Shadows are peripheral to my musical journey but to hear Pete Townshend say his biggest influence was Bruce Welsh and David Gilmour give credit to Hank Marvin, it all makes sense. I loved hearing a nearly 80 year old Hank Marvin talk about his “melodic improvisation” in his latest Gypsy Jazz project, “I’m not particularly good at it, but one has to start somewhere.” That gives me hope.

Who bought the first Stratocaster in Britain?
Who inspired David Gilmour and Pete Townsend to start playing guitar?
Which band wrote some of the most beautiful music ever?
Which band has lasted sixty years?
This is priceless music history.
Jonathan Amos, Matsuyama, Japan

Great show Billy!!As for me,the only song I remembered was Apache, which was a really big hit! If you had asked me back in the day who recorded it,I wouldn’t have had the slightest idea!! Great post!……Sal
Some great old stuff, “this is the famous red strat,it cost about 150 quid and it’s worth a lot more now. Cliff wants it back!”, how did you get It?, “I stole it”… hahahaha
And the record booths, geez how good was the sound quality in those little sound proof cabinets .
Glad you guys enjoyed the video.

I like all the old shadows songs (Ventures, Spotnicks as well)

The Shadows were heroes to my friends and I as we grew up and we saw them on stage quite a few times. Thanks for posting this, Billy.
Although their tunes were typically quite simple, this could be deceptive and you don’t have to look too hard to find passages needing a virtuosic technique and an underlying sophisticated musicianship. Hank Marvin’s playing could show the most amazing sensitivity and beauty, I believe, and as a band they were fantastic.
