Wondering if anyone other than me would be interested in Brian producing a Stevie Ray Vaughn lesson for us. He had such a unique style and sound that I would love to learn. Anyone else interested?

Ha, I’ve intentionally stayed away from SRV because I’m afraid I won’t do him justice. I could do a simple lesson on some of his commonly used techniques though, and there are a few of those classic SRV phrases that I can muttle through 🙂

Could I make a suggestion? How about “Mary Had A Little Lamb” by Buddy Guy, which SRV covered. Then with a few “How To’s” on Stevie’s style, we could then add some of that to it or play it like Buddy. I have a lot of Stevies CD’s & DVD’s & I’ve read a bit about his “Texas Blues”, but I honestly can’t think of another player that played like him, even his brother Jimmy has a completely different style & so did Otis Rush & Freddie King, also from Texas. My guess is he mixed his blues roots with his Jimi Hendrix influence of which he was a great admirer. The fact that he was booed off stage at his debut at Montreaux Jazz Festival would indicate that his style, unknown at the time, was just so radically different. To get his sound or even attempt it, you’d need heavier gauge strings then detune them & then an aggressive attack on the guitar. I can play Pride & Joy & Mary had a little lamb, but it just doesn’t sound anything like SRV when I play them. Maybe there will only ever be one Stevie Ray Vaughn, I know I’m no threat to his legacy. LOL

I’d LOVE a lesson, or one in 3 parts, on Stevie Ray Vaughan. Only two things:
1) Stevie didn’t play in Standard Tuning, he had his Strats tuned a 1/2 down. So to keep it ‘real’ we’d have to do that too. That’s no problem for me I had one Strat tuned that way for a while. The other option would to play all his song chords Flat, not Natural. I do that too, it’s no biggie but those things could really mess up Beginners head’s. [Jamming along to a SRV mp3 or YouTube Video in Std Tuning sounds terrible (IMHO)]
2) Stevie literally ABUSED the tremolo on his Strat. If the lesson(s) included using the Whammy Bar there’d have to be a legal disclaimer first, like: NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BROKEN GUITAR PARTS
(and members with Les Pauls or Teles couldn’t join in the fun either)
All kidding aside, I’d love an SRV Lesson, or lesson in a couple parts. He was magic.
(his last concert was on my birth date and it wasn’t ‘too far’ by car from where I’m at. Brian’s even closer) -

That would be great to have the tab and backing track for Mary Had A Little Lamb… any way you could post it Groundy? FYI, there is a really cool lesson on Gibson.com Arlen Roth lessons, on this. I’ve picked up the basics, but he goes a bit quick for me and doesnt show the flourishy accent runs that make this a really great song.
