This week, I’m submitting a playlist in lieu of Our Blues Roots. I’ve had too much going on and I’ve been unable to concentrate on a theme or a song’s history, so these are just a few favorites I hope you’ll like. I don’t think I’ve ever posted any of these songs here before.
A few guitarists are represented more than once, especially Johnny Shines, who is a marvel to behold. He was one of Robert Johnson’s running buddies and he lived until 1992—he was every bit Robert Johnson’s equal musically but his own musical legacy gets lost in that relationship. Robert Jr. Lockwood was another associate of Robert Johnson, and he and Johnny Shines often played together. Here’s a playlist of the two of them.
“Bristol Drive” doesn’t have any notable guitar but it’s the basis for Amos Milburn’s very fine “Bad, Bad Whiskey.” I also can’t find out who the guitarist is there. He’s really good, not flash or anything but he plays.
This brings you to a page where you can view all the songs, I’ve added a very minimal amount of info here; Johnny Shines photo in the playlist thumbnail.

I plan to have a real OBR next week with a real beginning, middle and end.
