I played over a backing track on this one. I tried different settings on my Line6 Pod Go, and I think I prefer real amps. LOL. I got a little ahead of the beat in a few places, but it’s The Blues.

So feels like I’m at a blues bar listening here Ralph, very professional and nothing like a slow blues! Especially loved your bends and use of vibrato, (ascending arpeggios too) very expressive and tasteful. Really enjoyed it, have had a couple of listens and about to go again. All the best!

Thank You for your comments Garry. Us Geetar Players love Slow Blues, don’t we?
I thought it was a really cool backing track because of the Hammond B3. I’ve always loved that sound. The track also had an unusual turnaround: A7-Bm7-C#m7-E7, which gave it a more Jazzy vibe. I had a lot of fun playing this, and I’m glad you enjoyed it Garry.

That was a cool, smoky, slow blues Ralph. I didn’t hear anything ahead of the beat, your phrasing and touch were on the money and your tone sounded great. Nicely played.

Thank You Ivan. I can hear myself rushing in a couple of places, but nothing too serious. I would rather play slightly behind the beat, especially on a Slow Blues. I appreciate your comments, and also appreciate you taking the time to listen.

That was really nice playing over that backing track Ralph! Did you just let it rip with your bag of tricks or was it more rehearsed?

Hey Mike, I did some practice takes and changed what I didn’t like. I did work out the turnaround because it wasn’t a standard blues turnaround. The 2:00 solo was improvised. I also had to work out the diminished licks because I’m not up on diminished scales, so I had to find which notes sounded good. I recorded this at different times and used different settings on my Line 6. So yes, it was partly rehearsed. I wish I could have done it in one take. It would have saved me some time. There’s also a lot of “Borrowing”:
BB King: opening lick from Sweet Little Angel, BB’s Box
Clapton: E9th from Hideaway, Rhythm from Worried Life Blues
T-Bone Walker/Allman Bros: Stormy Monday
John Mayer: A couple of bends.
Brian Sherrill: A couple of licks.
Just threw it all together and this is what I ended up with.
I think most Blues Guitar guys are the sum of all of their influences, and add their own touches.
I’m glad you liked my rehearsed/borrowed/improvised Blues Song Mike, and Thanks for listening.

Great performance, Ralph! Love the delicate, quieter, touches – then the really fast solo. Brilliant 👍🎶

Thank You Mark. I love playing slow blues because you can use dynamics and play fast or slow, soft or hard and leave a little space. I’m glad you enjoyed it Mark.
Thanks for listening,

So much to like in there, Ralph. I really enjoyed the faster licks from 2:00 to 2:40 but so much other tasteful stuff throughout.

Thank You John. I’m glad you heard some things you like. The fast licks I was thinking “Clapton”. Not exactly his licks, but more of an attitude.
Thanks for your comments John. I always value your opinions.

Of course, I love it Ralph.
One of the things I have to learn from you and some of the other great blues guys on this forum is to be more economical with my playing. I always feel like I have to do a lot when a little would be much better. You just seem to know when it is OK to repeat the same phrase multiple times before moving onto something else, it just sounds really right to do that. Also like the little sections where you seem to climb up the fretboard to higher and higher and then resolve it at the end – very cool.
Its a sign of great maturity in a player that we all hope to get to one day.
Oh, and I think I definitely prefer the sound I get through my amp. I guess I just know what to expect from it.

Thank You for all the great compliments Geoff. I know Brian stresses often that it’s OK to repeat phrases. A lot of Blues repeat, alter, and expand on simple phrases and make them musical. A lot of Blues songs try to repeat the same turnaround to give the song continuity.
Brian recently did a great lesson on phrasing using 4 or 5 notes (EP422), and it’s a great lesson for players at all levels.
I also prefer the sound of real amps, but my Wife and Neighbors not so much.
Does “sign of great maturity” mean old? LOL. One of the benefits of “being old” is that I spent so much time playing and learning to play as you have with your Classical works. There’s no replacement for TOI (Time On Instrument).
Check out EP422 and play around with it. I think you’ll really like it.
Thanks for listening and for all of your positive comments Geoff. I appreciate it.

Oh no Ralph. By ‘maturity’ I am referring to your playing – I mean that as one of the highest compliments I can give.
I have given a listedn to EP422 and I think I am going to make it my next lesson. The more I play the more I think economy of playing is the answer to great sound. Gonna give that one a go.
Your Canada friend 🙂

Of course I took it as a compliment Geoff. I was just making fun of my age. I’m sure you’ll really get into EP422, AKA saying more with less. Very good lesson.
Cheers,

Very creative Ralph. You are not just a Southern Rocker. Great picking technique. So layered and textured. Great blues and all your very own. I do hear some T-Bone in there which you master excellently. This gets better and man some good

Thank You John. I’m like you: I have many musical influences and styles of music that I like. I listen to pretty much any style of music and can usually find something I like with any style. The only kind of music I can’t make myself like is Polka Rap. (I hope I didn’t offend anyone).
Yes, there’s a little T-Bone in there, by way of The Allman Brothers. I’m glad you liked the playing and the mix. I’m getting to like this DAW thing and all the computer junk.
Thanks for your comments John, and Go Browns (And Steelers). I’m ready for football season.
