If you dig into the bios of some of the great guitar players, they all pay tribute to T-Bone Walker. When a lot of people were coming up, like BB, T-Bone was the star, the one everybody looked up to (and in their earlier days, tried to copy). As he said himself, he was born 30 years too soon – otherwise he would have been a Superstar.
My own guitar buddies, when I started playing, told me to go out and buy some T-Bone albums, as a way to catch up, to see where everybody was coming from. So I did that, but to be honest, I had no idea where he was on the fretboard, or what he was doing. That all came about later, when, by lucky coincidence, somebody turned me on to Duke Robillard, who at that time was a member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and who just happened to have VCR lessons (yep) of T-Bone style blues, and that was the big breakthrough moment for me. Been a fan of both T-Bone and Duke ever since.
This video is an amalgamation of several T-Bone songs and licks, put together as a lesson by Sam at MyTwangyGuitar.com, called Shufflin’ the Twang. It’s a good workout in the “Blues – T-Bone Style”!
TECH NOTE: I’m playing a loaner from a buddy of mine – a Gibson ES355. Never even held one of these before. This guitar is exceptional, and as I say in the vid, possibly the best guitar I ever played. I hope that comes across in this take. I’m going to keep working with this to see what sounds I can get out of it . . . always room for improvement.
Thanks for watching!
Just focus on the notes you DID get right . . . Frank Vignola
