Hi everyone 🙂
It only takes 26 seconds to play the EP237 rhythm lesson and it’s not even that hard to learn so I had to expand my challenge a little bit. For this recording I played it six times and decided to add some lead to it as well.
Figuring out the lead was interesting. Lead is not part of EP237 but during the lesson, Brian demonstrated a sample of his noodling in A major scale over this chord progression and I thought that it sounded awesome and so melodic I just had to learn it! And yet all Brian was doing there was simply going through the pentatonic patterns and so my ultimate goal is to figure out how he makes it so cohesive and melodic. I think this was a good learning experience for me.
To fill the gaps I also had to add some improvised parts, so I kept noodling along until some ideas stuck. It took about 20 takes until I settled on this one 🙂

Mind Blowing JoLa, fantastic. It was definitly worth the the 20 takes – and I guess this is the secret of the Challenge! We all want it to sound good and we repeat and repeat until it is as great as your playing. Nice Job!

JoLa, This piece is simply gorgeous! The tone is amazing, and your lead is like a professional Jazz guitar player. Time and touch are just spot on, too. Totally incredible! Congratulations.

JoLa,
Incredible! In my humble opinion this is your best posting ever – maybe it’s because I love this piece of music so much and your playing. You captured the rhythm perfectly and copied Brian’s lead to the letter with some of your own improv and it sounded great.
Congratulations! I loved it and as I say it’s now my favorite posting of yours.
You’ve come such a long way since you joined AM and I can’t believe your progress. Congrats!

I vote for this as the best Sept 2019 Challenge response…not that it’s a contest, but you know what I mean. This is equal quality to any professional guitarist video I’ve seen on Youtube. Several people have noted that your playing gets better with each post, and I would second that. I had to call my family over to have a look at it, and they were equally impressed.

Charming delightful are just two words but perfectly delightful and charming you played and improvisation fit very nice.. I too enjoy learning how to find the correct scale patterns ,, yes there are many ways and Brian explains well enough you can also find the notes within all the chords played.. this was a pleasure to listen and watch Jola.. I need to find out how to do picture in picture like some of you are doing.. it must be some kind of premium app lol
lovely tones from that semi too!

What do you write when you are speechless? JoLa, that was not to be surpassed in perfection! Great sound, great playing and of course a great timing. I especially liked your improvisation and the Rhythm / Lead compilation; you packed everything very nicely. And now you are faced with the next task, how something coherently can be worked out coherently; how you write. In my view, it’s just the way to go; you’re just damn fast. I spend a lot of time in the last few months to do something of my own. Sometimes I play something on different variants and can not decide what to prefer. One thing is certain, we can also learn a lot with it. Anyway; you played great!
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

I love that lesson, and you did a fantastic rendition of it. I had to jam along a little bit! As Wilfried says, the improvisation/soloing here takes you to yet another level of playing. Totally impressive!

Beautiful. Just to figure out the lead and how to make it cohesive and melodic is a great effort in itself. But to fill the gaps with some improvisation as well, just takes it all to another level or two.

Awesome playing, and very nice lead melody! I liked it very much! However, sometimes it was hard to hear lead on top of the rhythm (both have similar tone). In my opinion, the track would be even better if the rhythm and lead would be separated. I noticed that both guitar tracks are panned to center, even panning the left and right would help with that. or using EQ to cut some frequencies in rhythm and “make space” for lead guitar.
I liked the “picture-in-picture” idea 🙂 -

Great choice of melody, so laid back, and your arrangement sounds just right.

Thank you so much for the wonderful comments! They are really uplifting 😉
Just to address a few questions:
@sunburst – no fancy editing software here at all, just basic iMovie which comes free with a macbook 🙂
@Martin W and @Craig S – the guitar is Greg Bennett design Royale RL4
@Dave K – Yes, the lead was all major pentatonic with one tiny exception when there’s a short 1/2 bend right before a full bend on the B string 12 fret.
@Cezary B – Great suggestion! I will take that into consideration next time. Because this was a rhythm challenge, I sort of wanted to bring out the rhythm upfront and not focus on the lead too much. But I like the panning idea, I should have done that.
