I enjoyed working on this one. As usual, on these lead lessons, getting the phrasing right is a real challenge. I’m never really satisfied but I feel that I’m slowly improving over time.

Sounded good to me Jeff, great job. I couldn’t hear the backing track very good but that could be my headphones or anything but your part sounded great. Looking forward to more

Yeah my recording technique leaves a lot to be desired. I just stick my iphone on a cheap tripod and play into it’s microphone with the computer playing the backing track. I keep think I’ll get into something more sophisticated, but never do 🙂 Thanks for the feedback.

Jeff,
Agree with junkyard about the volume of the backing track. But I could hear it well enough to recognize that your playing was well done and totally in-sync to the track. You mention phrasing and I have been thinking a lot about that lately. The real test is when you are improvising. It is a lot more subtle than which notes to play.

Thanks for the compliment, yeah the phrasing is everything. I’m working on EP299 right now. It is a Chicago blues with no backing track and the timing and phrasing are a real challenge. I am more of a fingerstyle player, so leaning to play leads is relatively new to me and has been a blast. Right now I’m trying to follow Brian’s phrasings as close as possible to get the hang of it, but can’t wait until I’m able to start improvising more.

Your playing on that GS mini sounded really good and flawless, Jeff! Makes me want to learn that lesson now 🙂

Thanks, I really love the GS Mini. It is really nice for these kinds of pieces. I have light strings on it (11s) and I find I can bend on the higher frets almost as easily as my electric guitars. I find myself playing it more that any other guitar I have.

Sounding good, Jeff. I see you have installed the optional pickup in your GDS Mini, same as me. It’s a high quality humbucker pickup, and therefore very free of extraneous noise.

Thanks, yeah I picked that up a few months ago. I was actually surprised when I learned is was set up for a pickup — pleasantly surprised. Installed in just a few minutes and sounds really nice. They are great guitars.

Nicely played Jeff, despite your comments regards fingerstyle, you did appear to be very comfortable using a pick and the tone was great from that lovely sounding GS Mini.

I agree with Richard, you look quite comfortable with a pick and sounded great Jeff. Personally I see no need for anything anymore sophisticated regarding recording, unless of course you want to. 😀
I think I need to check out this lesson.🤔

Thanks Richard — in a past life I used to play quite a bit of bluegrass guitar. So the right hand pick stuff has come back pretty fast. What I have to work harder at is simply getting the phrasing where I want it. In bluegrass it seems like you’re just playing all out all the time with very few rests. This blues, rock and western style lead playing is an other animal. Much more sophisticated when it comes to phrasing, volume and tone. And uses so much more of the fretboard. I’m having a blast with it, really glad I found this site.

Me too, just finished the first half, but still need to get back to learning the 2nd half. Great job though!!! (…and then along comes the unplugged Clapton)

Hey Jeff, that was perfect man. Really enjoyed listening to that. That little Taylor sounds great, and your timing and feel was spot on. Excellent!
