Hello all!
First post here and I’m happy to be a part of this forum 🙂
I’ve been playing guitar all my life. Started at age eleven and I am now thirty-eight. I have a lot of music theory knowledge, but many holes since I have not learned in a linear fashion.
Today I picked up my guitar and created a chord progression by ear. I wanted to figure out exactly what I was doing theory-wise, so I transcribed it into Sibelius and started analyzing. I’m pretty confused, but figured out a couple of things:
1.) B Harmonic Major shares the same notes as my piece.
2.) Since my tonal center seems to be “E” (I decided this because By starting and ending the progression on E) and “E” is the fourth degree of this major scale, I can conclude that this is E Lydian. However, E Lydian has a G# in it making this E Lydian b3 or E lydian Diminished.
I am trying to figure out what key this would be in. Or how to think about it, so I can figure out what scales to write a guitar solo and where I want the piece to move to next.
Also, trying to figure out where this Db chord comes from. C# is the vi chord of E Lydian Diminished and it’s the ii chord of B Harmonic Major, but where does the borrowed Db major chord come from? With some research I think it is borrowed from the C# Mixolydian scale.
Where is the Bb minor 7 borrowed from?
Where is the Cm7 borrowed from?
So far…
I – ? – im7 – vim7 – ? – IVmaj7 – IVm7 – ? – Vmaj7
Here is the chord Progression:
Eadd4 – Dbadd4 – Em7 – Dbm7 – Dbmaj7 – Bbmaj7 – Bbm7
Cm7 – Bmaj7
