This is for all you guitar studs and studdesses out there. I’m a bit frustrated trying to play up to speed. Now some of you will say, it’s not about how fast you play. Well sometimes yes it is. Here’s an example: I’m working on a short 4 stanza Stevie Ray Vaughn lick. This did not come from Brian’s lessons. I really love hearing it when a skilled guitarist plays it. However, it is written in 4/4 time at 120 bpm. It’s played in triplets. So 3 notes per beat, 12 notes per stanza. That’s clipping along at a rapid 360 snaps a handful. That’s pretty fast. I learned how to type back in the days of old manual type writers. Even after being trained in weaponry in AIT in the army and Nixon started pulling troops out of Vietnam, I ended up in Germany as a clerk typist. Go figure. Anyway, I was pretty damn fast. I never looked at the key pad. Just read the words and flew along. But I can’t seem to do that with guitar. I find myself always looking at the keyboard especially when moving from one position to another. I think using my eyes to transmit to my brain and then back to my fingers is really slowing me down. (ok, that and old age). I’d like to get my eyes out of the equation. Any tips you might have would be appreciated. One person told me he would practice in the dark. Anyone try that? Right now I can get that SRV lick up to about 80 bpm. Long ways to go. How do you work up to speed? How do you players keep your eyes off the fretboard?
