I don’t understand the play along tempo thinking. On almost every lesson I work through the tune until I can play at 100% but then go to the play along MP and find that the tempo is about 25% faster – then I struggle with it. It’s discouraging. Why not have the play along recordings at record tempo?

Hello Jim
I am in your shoes. I am determined to get up to speed no matter how long it takes if I live long enough. I’ve learned a long time ago that some of us are born with the ability and most of us aren’t. We have to work harder. It would be nice if we could vary the speed.

@jamminjim, @brian,@Bryce-AKguitar, I think I know what you mean, Jim. Eg. EP 135 the mp3 tempo is 110 b/m. 100% on Soundslice is about 76 b/m and 125% is about 90 b/m. It would be helpful if Soundslice could match Brian’s playing tempo because, often, getting up to that tempo is one of the biggest challenges. I’m not sure if there’s some limitation on Soundslice.

On my screen, John’s message was blocked by the Soundslice above it. Decided to see if I could C/V it to read. Since I did and it worked, I’m reposting it verbatim below:

Hi i think maybe what happens is that some post Brian has used the slow walk through for the Soundslice and others the regular tempo recording. Some times Soundslice will play up to full tempo. I guess this is because Brian has thought that a lesson is pretty fast even the slow Soundslice rate and therefore has used the slower version to help us get started..this may not be right but its perhaps an explanation of the variance. Soundslice is really intended to teach all of the specific notes. I use the slow walk through video as johnstrat pointed out, and sync that with the tab so that you have a slow version of me playing it, with tab. I intentionally create it slower.

@brian, I can see your reasoning. However, I have never used Soundslice at it’s slowest setting, I usually start at about 75%. Maybe a lot of members are not really using that slowest setting. I wonder if 50% of the faster tempo would be slow enough for most members. I know I would get more functionality if it actually could match your fast tempo at 125% and I think that’s what @jamminjim is asking also.

If you use an iPad or Macbook Pro, an inexpensive app called Anytune will give you infinite tempo adjustment (and pitch, as well). So I just download Brian’s lessons and jamtracks and adjust the tempo as needed. To learn the lesson, I often start out with Brian’s lesson mp3 at 70%, which sounds ridiculously slow. Then after I’ve learned the fingering, maybe I play along with the jamtrack set at 80%, then work up to 100% over a few days. Sometimes I can never play along with it at 100%, and just have to be happy with 90% or whatever.

Chargo I think the very slow speeds help the less able players such as myself get a foothold so I find Brian’s methods here very helpful. You can always work the speed up once you have it properly founded but getting it right is so fundamental; thus I think that makes this the right way, if it has to be a binary choice.
It looks as if Sunjamr has an ideal solution and of course you could use Slowhand. If the pace required is slower than the full tempo video Slowhand will allow you to arrive at 100 percent speed playback.

No bout adoubt it! Many instructors if not all emphasize starting off as slow as possible playing anything period. UNLESS you know what it is you are playing.. Many times I played guitar tunes out of tempo because I rushed through the notation which in many cases , if not playing something note for note,, one can easily lose count of tempo,,or the FEEL ..I still do it but than I make my own way which is not really the right way.. I think recent years I learned this more than ever,, it is really critical to go very slow playing until you get every measure exact before trying to play well up to tempo..like the old saying “learn how to crawl before you can walk” I still am crawling, laughing having fun..can’t wait to dive into ep177 ..got to start that later this afternoon.. cheers everybody!

No problem if other members like the slower tempo feature. Anybody aware of an app for pc like the Anytune, sunjamr mentioned above.
