So you retire from one job and start becoming a session player. Geez some guys have all the talent. 🙂 Outstanding job John. Super professional! The recording quality was ridiculously superb.

You’re playing is superb! I’ll have to listen to something you made a year ago. At this point, it seems like you could pick up anything and make it sing.

Thanks for listening and your kind comments but it all seems a little hollow because it wasn’t LIVE! That darn Bryce is pushing us out of our comfort zone. Now I won’t be satisfied until I get out there. (How many “takes” will the audience tolerate?) Darn you, Bryce! -

Beautiful. One of Clapton’s best from “Slowhand” I think!

Yes John,
that makes an already thoughtful. I think there must also be opportunities arise. Force you should not.
Nevertheless, when one (John) performs, one creates it.:-)All the best for your Goal. You Play great!

Nice job John, very clean. I’m curious because we all look to compare and improve. How many days? Hours? did you spend working on this? How many takes to get it this good? (Perfect to my ears)

@kubrider, I looked it over and worked on the arpeggiated chords for about an hour and a half Sat, noodled with it a little Sunday morning and then spent Sunday evening about 6 to 10 pm learning the lead and getting the timing and recording. I probably recorded about 10 takes. Stupid things happen when I record, like finally playing it perfectly and finding I pushed play instead of record or choosing the wrong input.
I recorded directly from my Taylor into the input device and added some reverb to the lead. -
January 4, 2016 at 10:27 am #30807
It sounds lovely John, and super clean. There was a great balance between rhythm and lead tracks. Your timing was spot on. If I had any suggestion now, it would be to focus a little less on the timing, and try to make the phrases come out more like a human voice, and less like an instrument perfectly playing the notes.
Not that there was anything wrong with what you did. It was great, but there is always another level.

Thanks for the feedback John, you are quite the accomplished guitarist. To have put that together that quickly and record as well. It took you longer to record than to learn the piece. I haven’t tried recording yet but I’m getting the impression from everyone it’s not as easy as it would seem. That’s my 2016 goal to begin recording and taking part in the challenges.

@kubrider, be encouraged by that. I am learning things faster than 6 mos ago because these patterns are limited and occur again and again, in many songs.Brian shows us these patterns over and over again in his compositions. The way the major pentatonic scale relates to the A shaped root chord and how the double stop embellishments work over the major pentatonic, how to locate other major notes in the major pentatonic, how the major pentatonic overlays the minor especially in box 1. How to harmonize double stop 3rds and 6ths around the chord shapes. The notes of the solo don’t come out of thin air and when you recognize the patterns, learning speed really improves. I was thinking of making a short video emphasizing some of these patterns.

Really itching to get out there and play. I got to say this is really motivating to put my best effort into practicing, because sooner or later I will have to put my skills to the test. I still havn’t found a jam buddy or group, but I found a bar in the city that offers an “open stage”. “First come first play” they say. I will check it out this Thursday.

John, when you hear the kind of comments/criticisms that Duffy made in #30807, and those are the only sort of things I might say (maybe to implement that, I’d suggest playing phrases backwards, skipping/adding notes/bars, not necessarily in performance but just to get to know the piece, so you can), when that’s what you’re hearing, you know you’re ready to perform. You’ll find out what else you need to know by doing that.
Between ’96 and 2001, I played three (or four?) live solo gittar concerts (at 5C Cultural Center in Manhattan) and in one group performance, giving in to the suggestions of my friends who could hear that I wanted to perform but needed to be pushed. I wasn’t necessarily “ready” but I learned a lot about timing and phrasing from playing out (even things I couldn’t immediately execute–I learned what it means to slow down and let a song breathe; you sound like you already know that but there will surely be other things for you to find out). It was great for my confidence–and building confidence was part of a positive feedback loop that pushed me to learn more.
At present, I’m back to “before then” in my abilities, but I’m looking forward to playing live as soon as I can, maybe in one of the parks next spring (test out my retirement strategy with a hat). You can bet I’ll let you know if I do.

Thanks Wilfried! Of course, I will let you know. But don’t underestimate yourself: Listening to your last couple of postings I would say you are good and ready for a little public exposure. Seriously, I think you should consider that.

@charjo, Was out of town for a bit, came home and logged on the AM forum to check on what was new. I see all this activity on Peaches @ Diesel. I figured something big happened and I’d better check it out.
Glad I did John, that was amazing. Both parts were played so nice. It’s amazing what retirement can do for ones guitar playing. But please John, it’s only been a week….if you keep this up, we will have to buy your CD’s or listing to your music on the radio.Very nice work on this John,

Just caught up with your your Peaches and Diesel recording John – and it is an absolute feast to the ears. Truly inspirational. And the clarity of the recording is superb.
Your idea of making a short video emphasising use of the recurring patterns would be much appreciated I’m sure.

Thanks again everybody. It’s not a difficult piece but sounds beautiful. Worth the time to learn it and Brian has some good theory teaching within the song lesson.

Hi John,
That was fantastic! Beautifully played!
I love Eric Clapton’s Slow Blues, and, with your inspiration, I am studying Brian’s lesson for this piece.
It reminds me of “Wonderful Tonight”: another favourite of mine. Here is my attempt at that one, played a few months ago:
Not a patch on your playing, but I’ll keep trying!

hey John, I just found this for the first time; really beautifully played and recorded;
You say you got this Peaches & Diesel lesson from Brian’s YouTube channel but I can’t find it there. Is there a lesson number or name?
thanks-

This came from another thread by Lights inquiring about some song lessons Brian had done. He has a separate YouTube channel with some covers. Here’s the link.
