Hi Active Melody Community!
I have seen a ton of people committing to the July’s Open / Brian’s Birthday Challenge. Thanks to all who have stepped up to the plate and committed! You guys are doing great with these challenges! If you can stick to doing them, it is a fast way to improve your playing.
August’s Challenge will be lesson EP103. It is an “in the style of” J.J. Cale that has a jam track. This piece can be played on either an acoustic or electric. Playing with the jam track on this challenge piece is crucial. So make sure you have some way of playing along with it. You can use a phone, stereo, mp3 player, or DAW playing the jam track. Playing along with music or other musicians will really improve your sense of timing and make you a better player. The notes and licks in this lesson are not difficult, it is the timing that makes this lesson challenging.

Not so long ago I posted a version of the EP103, but since the Challenges are so motivating and I am such a J.J. Cale fan, I might do a second version… 🙂

I’ve got to do this one. I’ve been a big fan of JJ Cale since my college roommate turned me on to him 40 years ago.
Here’s a great JJ Cale studio session for anyone wanting to check out his work:
This new gem just showed up on youtube today:

Yeah! Might be late and might be crappy, but I’ll get there 🙂
I was plucking away on the rhythm part and it’s trickier than it looks. Thank Brian for the tablature, it’s not easy to explain. And even the lead part is not as easy as it might seem.

I think I am just going to do the lead part. But I agree the timing is tricky!

aaargh, the timing on lead is killing me. So much space to get lost in! I prefer the reliable tick-tock of rhythm.

Hmmm… I’ve been catching up with other lessons, including 164 and now 166.
103 is interesting. I have not tried playing stuff with jam tracks, so there’s a good reason to try. Question is: will I be able to learn it between now and the weekend?
We’ll see.
🙂
