Dear Friends and pickers
Sorry to announce to you I have no December Challenge submission because of a rotator cuff injury. It happened on Dec31. I was acting a fool with my granddaughter and fell onto my right shoulder on the cement. ouch!!! I can’t sleep too well. can’t play my guitar and that’s the biggest injury. I’m so upset with myself. I’m 70 in April and I shouldn’t have been on that dam 2 wheeled scooter 9-year-olds play with.

So sorry to hear this, Paddy…..Very painful I am sure. I can certainly understand your frustration….Shoulders are incredibly fragile and can take their time healing. I’ve had a very annoying left shoulder strain for several months now that I attribute to playing guitar….A few years back I developed a frozen shoulder in the same area from playing wide body acoustic guitars…..I ended up trading most of them in for skinny electrics….Fortunately I didn’t have to quit playing, just play a bit less so as to let it heal…..
Anyway…..get better ASAP and as comfortably as possible….
best regards.
Marty

Thanks Marty, I know this is going to take a while to heal but I won’t give up, that’s for sure. Going to the doctor tomorrow.

Sorry to hear this, Pat. Like Marty, I went through a year of a painful frozen shoulder that I attribute to tension in my shoulder while playing guitar. Hope your recovery is on the fast track.

Ouch! I am increasingly protecting my fingers and arms, because I don’t want to lose the ability to play my guitar ever.

Paddyboy! I’m sorry to hear this because I know exactly what that’s like! 🙁 I tore my rotator’s cuff in both shoulders (one at at time) but instead of surgeries, I ended up with many long months of physical therapy. The therapy was incredibly painful but it helped a lot, got my range of motion from frozen shoulders to about 95% normal.
Oh, and don’t be too mad at yourself for getting injured while playing with your granddaughter…. I injured myself doing almost nothing or just overreaching for something at the back of my car 😒
Anyway, wish you quick recovery. In the meantime, maybe you can play lap guitar or something like this –> Play the Guitar One Handed
😉

Paddyboy, so sorry to hear about your injury. I have two grandchildren myself so I know exactly what you mean. Hoping you have a speedy recovery and back playing sooner than later.

Hey….check out Jola’s link above……fascinating story….testimony to where there’s a will there’s a way.
One other little side note, Paddy…..if you have freedom of movement (sans sling) a Ukulele is an extremely light instrument that is pretty easy to self learn and can help to fuel your creative juices while waiting for healing…just a thought…..

That’s a bummer, Paddy. I wish you a speedy recovery. And don’t feel bad about yourself, after all you made your granddaughter happy! Again, get well soon so that you can return to the six strings, which you obviously handle much more expertly than a 2-wheeler.

I tore mine several years ago after a fall on the ice. The pain was excruciating and I couldn’t even button my shirt for 2 weeks. The night pain was the worst. Orthopedist told me it was a partial tear that would heal on its own in a couple months, but I had pain for about 6 months.
So I have a lot of empathy for you. Suffering the loss of playing the guitar is only temporary and we will be here with support. So hang out here on the forum with us, and we will wait to hear your great playing again. Hopefully sooner than later. Hang in there Paddyboy. Best wishes. -

Sorry to hear about your accident Paddyboy!!Playing with grandchildren is fun,but can be dangerous for older folk! I had both rotator cuffs operated on in my mid fifty’s,and the rehab is important! It was caused by impingement from operating overhead machinery all my working days! Couldn’t sleep at night from constant pain!I’m 77 now,and the shoulders are fine!! Good luck with your injury!

Very Sorry to hear this. You seem to be far from alone here and sadly I can vouch for the nuisance of such things. 6th October last I tripped missing a step on a marble floor that I had not noticed and fell and shattered my rigth greater Tubercle which is the bone at the top of the humerus that the the rotator attaches to. The shoulder also dislocated. But I am now playing my guitar albeit that I have some ache most of the time. Here’s a post for aspiration for recoverees at AM.
Just a selection of beyond beginners!
Speedy and full Recovery to all

Very sorry to hear about your injury Paddyboy. Hopefully you can heal with physical therapy and time. Interesting to read about all the frozen shoulders. I too am a little over a year into frozen left shoulder, which I followed up by partially tearing while lifting a kayak. I hadn’t associated the frozen shoulder with the guitar, but now I wonder. I read something the other day I thought funny. “The most common cause of injury is old men thinking they are young men.” 🙂

You are so right Doug, Old men thinking their young! But this was my wake up call. It’s oatmeal and carrots for me from now on. LOL

Thank you JoLa, That was very interesting but I have no desire to play one-handed guitar. It was an interesting video though.

Thanks Richard, Hopefully, it’s not too bad. At this point, I don’t know if it’s a sprain or a tear. Doctor appt tomorrow.

Lost track of where I was in thanking everybody so let me just say this to you all.
Thanks for all the well wishes and understanding. I know I’ll be back soon to enjoy you all and this site. It’s just a bummer that it happened! Appears I have lots of company with this type of injury though. I’ve never had so much as a broken bone in my life, until this.
I’m hanging in there hang so thanks again

Oh man, Paddy, I’m very sorry and I wish you a speedy recovery so that you can pursue your beloved hobby again. You are definitely a great grandpa!
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.
