I think there is nothing wrong with occasionally sharing an interesting lesson from another online instructor, especially if it’s just sharing basic knowledge in a graphic way, like this video. This is something I think we all need to know, since it will help us to navigate the full length of the fretboard in a simple way. This guy went to significant effort to generate his fretboard diagrams, which makes it very easy to follow and remember.

Steve why on planet earth even question or ask if it okay or if what you just topiced…? I remember time a guy from my own country (BRYCE FROM ALASKA) said such links were a distraction or and violation under TOS ..but than I took it for whatever he pm’d me at that time.. yeah I know a lot seen done that too..more power to you as a secondary Steve! All I know is I can and will enjoy what lessons are here too ,share to those who inquire additional aqid,,otherwise it is dribble my friend..tell you what I would like to see you do here on AM, show case some the AM lessons on the screen.. stop and point out the hard measures ..that’s what I think we old timers should be doing here on Brian’s site. Bryce left this site but pops in and on special occasions lol..maybe his youtube guitar aventures is doing better? Curious to find out, going to type “guitar adventures” see if he still has a youtube account. peace bro.. seen more and watched way more jamplay aka fretjam here probably more than anyone here at AM.. I know it is a bold statement but think so! enjoy!

Yeh, I’ve also thought about picking a current lesson and doing a video about how I dealt with the difficult parts. Maybe that will be a thing for the future.

I think the logic was something like this. We all appreciate what Brian does and the incredible value that Active Melody offers. He continues to expand his catalogue and has never increased the price. Out of respect for what Brian does, it doesn’t seem fair to promote other subscription or donation guitar sites on the forum that Brian provides for us.
Perhaps we should put the question to Brian directly. I presume Bryce had Brian’s ear at the time and was representing Brian’s feelings on the matter. I’m sure most of us are aware of what other online instructors have to offer and I don’t think I need to promote them here. I consider it to be part of our civil and respectful forum where we don’t push our personal beliefs or disparage members past or present.

Yeh, by the look of it, the author of the video above ONLY deals with one specific aspect of guitar knowledge, which is analyzing and defining scales all up and down the neck. There are similar Youtube lessons that analyze in great detail different ways to hold a pick, or different ways of tuning guitars, or how to play squealies, and I think it would be entirely OK to post some of those on this forum as well. Brian’s lessons, on the other hand, provide a full spectrum of guitar knowledge, plus a vast collection of awesome songs. So Brian provides a proven method for learning improv, whereas these other videos are just delving into the mechanics or theory of some particular aspect of guitar playing.

BTW, I have posted some of my Monthly Challenges on other forums, and I know for a fact that some people have joined AM because of that. The last time I looked, one of my JJ Cale videos had over 42,000 views, and since I’ve explained the AM monthly challenges in all but a few personal videos, all those viewers learned about AM just because I’m happy to share my meager knowledge and mediocre skills.

I agree with you – out of respect for Brian, I won’t post anything by another instructor without first asking Brian about it. In the idea of being respectful of Brian, I personally think that it is rude to post material from Subscription sites

Certain material, such as lessons that you would get via email from Reverb.com or Guitar World, Brian is usually OK with it if you ask him.
BUT, material from someone like Griff Hamlin of Blues Guitar Unleashed or John Tuggle of Learning Guitar Now, he doesn’t want posted because its a direct competitor.

What Sunjamr Steve posted initially would be likely OK because its just a different way to look at material that is common to most Blues & Rock guitar sites

The best way to judge this is to realize that Brian’s livelihood and his means of supporting his family is Active Melody. With Brian’s generosity to all of us, let’s not put him in a position that he would have to say something about what we post.

The video above is not from a subscription site, and there is nothing to join. It’s part of a limited series of tutorials on scales and chords. New lessons are not regularly produced. It is in no way competition for Brian’s lessons. I think the test is this: If someone posted a lesson on this forum from Justinguitar or Marty Schwarz or John Tuggle, then it is theoretically possible (but not likely, I think) that someone might like their teaching style and bail out of AM and join their site. Rather than bothering Brian with such trivia, I think it would be better to just put yourself in his position, and ask the question: “Is this competition, and could it cost me memberships?”. In this case, the answer is clearly “No”.

I’m not trying to stir a debate here – only speaking from experience

For What Its Worth – In the past, I’ve asked Brian about posting certain videos, he gave his Yeah or Nay and there was an occasion or two that he thanked me for the consideration before posting, explaining how he was trying to build Active Melody

I knew what you had posted wouldn’t be an issue, I was merely responding to John’s comments…….

      Steve,
I am guilty of posting links I thought the members would find interesting, also, but I always feel uneasy about it. Fretjam is quite an extensive theory site that is set up for donations from users, much like Justin Guitar. I suspect more of their revenue comes from advertisers that use cookies to link you to products and other subscription learning sites.

I didn’t think there was any embargo on posting links or videos on instruction, AM forum has a section for such things to happen “discuss music/songs”, it even encourages the posting of links, I agree about posting content from payable sites though and giving Brian’s competition advertisement.

No embargo Billy, we’ve all done it but as has been stated, we all need to use discretion in what we post

I found it useful, and it’s a topic that Brian might revisit and do some more lessons on but for the more advanced players it might seem boring. like the music theory series of postings in the forum, it is helpful for us beginners with out killing off the momentum of Brian’s lessons.

I have suggested that Brian add a Lick library to the existing blues course, were we can submit a lick and if it is good enough to be posted the member would get credit for it. ( helpful for us beginners) and less work for Brian

I guess I am a bit amused by this thread. When I first joined A.M. I posted a few recordings of things I was working on. None were Active Melody lessons. But I was testing posting mp3s, then soundcloud, then I think Youtube. I was getting ready to post another piece when I noticed the description for the Showcase Your Playing forum specifically stated A.M. lessons. So I asked whether it was appropriate to post non-A.M. pieces. The thread seemed to devolve into this same discussion about non A.M. links even though that was not what my question was. I concluded I would not post any non-AM pieces, which I think other than once I have stuck to. Of course today, I see posts of non-A.M. pieces all the time, so I guess it is O.K.

Absolutely, Bob. I’d be happy to hear anything you’ve got. It’s all about our mutual progress on guitar. I don’t think it’s fair to promote other instructors on the Active Melody forum but showing what we’ve been learning is fair game. I’d like to see more posts like Sunjamr Steve’s, where we teach each other something useful or interesting. I know Brian has been on board with that type of post in the past.

Interesting comments I recently posted a link to Tom Stahle who has some free videos on chords and chords in open tunings which I had not seen elsewhere and which I considered a useful resource. I did not think the link was in competition to Brian’s excellent tutorials and although you can subscribe to this site to allow that person to earn money from advertisements you do not subscribe to a payment.
However as much as I like Brian’s web site the theory side is sometimes spread over different lessons which do not always come up in a search and many new subscribers to Brian’s site end up on the forum asking for information and advice for theory and relevant tutorials. And without the advice of knowlegable forum members like Charjo and Duffy the site would be lacking at times.
Regards to Brian and those forum members.
