🤠 Howdy!
This was really a tough but fun challenge for me. I have finally dug into the Dave Rawlings style lesson as I became a big fan of his playing style. Normally, I am not exactly an avid country music listener but I can listen to Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings all day long, they’re great storytellers and musicians. I have also added a “second verse” to Brian’s composition, trying to stay within the melody somewhat 🙂
The lead guitar is my newest pride and toy 😉 It’s a Loar LH301T, I traded my unloved MiM Fender partscaster for it, and I absolutely love it!
Ok, see y’all at the country challenge!

That’s a great lesson to get into, you really captured those trademark discordant notes that Brian/Dave used to such good effect…along with that ambling and deceptively lazy pace. Great work again Jola.

What a clever beginning JoLa! Rawlings style is so unique. Your verse fit right in.
With that guitar and hat you look every bit the country girl. Very enjoyable all around.James

Hi, Jola! What a nice surprise, this is the funniest thing you ever did in AM! Very cool! And what a set of high end instruments in one video. I like it!

Nice playing and improvising you really captured the feel and laid back country vibe . Well done

Beautiful tune you chose! I went to the music and thought “looks simple” but after hearing you play the simplicity translates into a beautiful melody. I love the video and your smiling because the mandolin didn’t cut off. Both guitars sound really nice but different. The first acoustic has a warm & deep resonate sound. The second is punchy, clean and crisp. I think I am going to put this on my list (which is growing unmanageably.) Everything about your performance was country & western. Nice work!

Girl, what did you do? The idea, the guitar playing. I always imagine an environment in which such a track is played. Country has so many different sides; you occupy a page. You have developed great and I am always looking forward to your submissions. Really good, as always!
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Nice playing Jola, and was that a pick you were using? Congrats on that guitar, great tone. You had that country look and sound….

November 2, 2019 at 5:34 pm #148915
Thanks – Yes, I used a thumb pick on the rhythm and a regular pick for the lead. It added to the challenge 🙂

JoLa that was great. You have an excellent strumming technique. Fluid, steady and controlled with accurate execution. You played the lesson spot on and your additional chorus complimented the first one and fell right in the pocket. Like your new guitar. Sounds great. Nice get-up too…ready for Nashville!

The mandolin thing cracked me up – at first I thought it was you playing it. Then I realized it was somebody in the next room. Love your new guitar. Now you need to go out and buy a made in USA Strat.

Really, very nice sound quality, how did you record ? you’ve got a good picking style, very clean.

Thanks, Don Mati. Both guitars were recorded with direct line AND a condenser microphone to Focusrite Scarlett interface to GarageBand. So the sound is a mixture of mic and pickups.

Nice job on that ep068 Jola. I thought some note were a little dissonant sounding. then I discovered thats how Dave plays. it sounded nice though and I enjoyed listening. I wish I knew How to record like you do with the double videos. Also I’ve never really recorded these videos with my guitar plugged. Anyway, your doing well and I like the sound of your git fiddle there.

That was cool, JoLa. You played along with yourself, so it’s a double effort ! Digging the hat, country girl. You may have to move to Nashville.

Well the votes are already in…..you carried all of your districts….which is to say, it worked for me as well…..Ever creative, Jola…
Like the Lohr….they make nice guitars….down the road you will eventually get another Strat….they are a must have in one’s guitar collection….
Great playing, Jola….

Wow. What a heavenly tone your new guitar makes! I remember Bob Dylan often played a guitar that looked like that… when he was sining Hurricane live somewhere… Anyway, this shows your creative side which is AM is all about. I am not familiar with Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. But I am learning now. Loved the dissonant sound here and there. Lovely accompaniment.

Wow, that’s some fantastic video work and even better playing! I love that you played the Dave Rawlings lead stuff… while playing along with your own rhythm track.. very creative stuff JoLa. Also good to see you with a pick in your right hand. This was your best video yet, by a mile!

That was great, Jola! Loved that you played the rhythm and then played the lead over your own rhythm playing (rather than a jam track). Love the new guitar! Has a great crisp sound to it that worked perfectly for your lead. Awesome as always!

Hi Jola.
It seems to me you’ve been not wasting this time I’ve been away.
Your sound and tempo sounds better to me.I think your trade fender2Loar has been a good idea !!!
also … your video presentation is clearly more elaborated and tasty.
well done!!

Really nice. Obvious talent. Like others, I love the hat. I prefer a Fedora, but I live in cowboy country so I’m pretty sure I’m the only one around here who doesn’t wear a baseball or cowboy hat. I better move to New York.
