November 2, 2019 at 3:17 pm #148822
This was really a tough but fun challenge for me. I have finally dug into the Dave Rawlings style lesson as I became a big fan of his playing style. Normally, I am not exactly an avid country music listener but I can listen to Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings all day long, they’re great storytellers and musicians. I have also added a “second verse” to Brian’s composition, trying to stay within the melody somewhat 🙂
The lead guitar is my newest pride and toy 😉 It’s a Loar LH301T, I traded my unloved MiM Fender partscaster for it, and I absolutely love it!
Ok, see y’all at the country challenge!
November 2, 2019 at 3:42 pm #148834AndreMParticipant
So nice country feel, excellent playing, i’ll have to try putting two of me in a video lol
Oh by the way nice hat.
November 2, 2019 at 3:51 pm #148841Thomas WParticipant
Very nice JoLa, well played, a new toy (I feel sorry for your parts caster) and a nice hat! Great!
November 2, 2019 at 3:53 pm #148842sunburstParticipant
Haha I liked your intro Jola made me smile actually chuckled.. You sure picked a great lesson and this you did great, certainly landed a good tempo top to bottom lol too!
November 2, 2019 at 4:05 pm #148848satelliteParticipant
That’s a great lesson to get into, you really captured those trademark discordant notes that Brian/Dave used to such good effect…along with that ambling and deceptively lazy pace. Great work again Jola.
November 2, 2019 at 4:14 pm #148851James BParticipant
What a clever beginning JoLa! Rawlings style is so unique. Your verse fit right in.
With that guitar and hat you look every bit the country girl. Very enjoyable all around.
November 2, 2019 at 4:24 pm #148860LightsParticipant
Hi, Jola! What a nice surprise, this is the funniest thing you ever did in AM! Very cool! And what a set of high end instruments in one video. I like it!
November 2, 2019 at 4:48 pm #148877Martin WParticipant
Nice playing and improvising you really captured the feel and laid back country vibe . Well done
November 2, 2019 at 5:16 pm #148899John HParticipant
Beautiful tune you chose! I went to the music and thought “looks simple” but after hearing you play the simplicity translates into a beautiful melody. I love the video and your smiling because the mandolin didn’t cut off. Both guitars sound really nice but different. The first acoustic has a warm & deep resonate sound. The second is punchy, clean and crisp. I think I am going to put this on my list (which is growing unmanageably.) Everything about your performance was country & western. Nice work!
November 2, 2019 at 5:23 pm #148903WBluesParticipant
Girl, what did you do? The idea, the guitar playing. I always imagine an environment in which such a track is played. Country has so many different sides; you occupy a page. You have developed great and I am always looking forward to your submissions. Really good, as always!
November 2, 2019 at 5:31 pm #148911bruce sParticipant
Nice playing Jola, and was that a pick you were using? Congrats on that guitar, great tone. You had that country look and sound….
November 2, 2019 at 5:34 pm #148915
Thanks – Yes, I used a thumb pick on the rhythm and a regular pick for the lead. It added to the challenge 🙂
November 2, 2019 at 5:34 pm #148917Craig SParticipant
Why Sheriff Craig thinks Miss Jola did some mighty fine pickin’. It took me back to my days on the range, my humble thanks ma’am!
November 2, 2019 at 5:42 pm #148927IvanParticipant
JoLa that was great. You have an excellent strumming technique. Fluid, steady and controlled with accurate execution. You played the lesson spot on and your additional chorus complimented the first one and fell right in the pocket. Like your new guitar. Sounds great. Nice get-up too…ready for Nashville!
November 2, 2019 at 6:06 pm #148945Richard SParticipant
That was down home good playing there. Grand Old pry time for you.
Great video – really enjoyed the playing. Was that ending on a timer?
November 2, 2019 at 6:06 pm #148946Phil BParticipant
Well that hat certainly gave you a head start. That was quirky, interesting, original and beautifully played. You’ve a nice couple of guitars there. I always look forward to your submissions, you make playing look so easy. Great sense of rhythm and accurate picking.
November 2, 2019 at 6:45 pm #148972Dan LParticipant

Very evocative, I was waiting for you to sing to us how lonesome you were you could cry.

The mandolin thing cracked me up – at first I thought it was you playing it. Then I realized it was somebody in the next room. Love your new guitar. Now you need to go out and buy a made in USA Strat.

Now you need to go out and buy a made in USA Strat.

Another nice one, JoLa. Love your new guitar. Fits you perfectly, and looks and sounds great. Way to arrange this and play all the parts so well!
November 3, 2019 at 7:33 am #149099donmatiParticipant
Really, very nice sound quality, how did you record ? you’ve got a good picking style, very clean.
November 5, 2019 at 1:40 pm #149814
Thanks, Don Mati. Both guitars were recorded with direct line AND a condenser microphone to Focusrite Scarlett interface to GarageBand. So the sound is a mixture of mic and pickups.

Nice job on that ep068 Jola. I thought some note were a little dissonant sounding. then I discovered thats how Dave plays. it sounded nice though and I enjoyed listening. I wish I knew How to record like you do with the double videos. Also I’ve never really recorded these videos with my guitar plugged. Anyway, your doing well and I like the sound of your git fiddle there.

November 3, 2019 at 3:17 pm #149308Peter AParticipant
That was cool, JoLa. You played along with yourself, so it’s a double effort ! Digging the hat, country girl. You may have to move to Nashville.
November 3, 2019 at 3:37 pm #149321Martin GParticipant
Well the votes are already in…..you carried all of your districts….which is to say, it worked for me as well…..Ever creative, Jola…
Like the Lohr….they make nice guitars….down the road you will eventually get another Strat….they are a must have in one’s guitar collection….
Great playing, Jola….
November 3, 2019 at 4:43 pm #149351Hide (ひで）Participant
Wow. What a heavenly tone your new guitar makes! I remember Bob Dylan often played a guitar that looked like that… when he was sining Hurricane live somewhere… Anyway, this shows your creative side which is AM is all about. I am not familiar with Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. But I am learning now. Loved the dissonant sound here and there. Lovely accompaniment.
November 3, 2019 at 5:36 pm #149402Charles BParticipant
Both the rhythm in the lead were very well done. Sounded awesome.
November 3, 2019 at 6:38 pm #149448BrianKeymaster
Wow, that’s some fantastic video work and even better playing! I love that you played the Dave Rawlings lead stuff… while playing along with your own rhythm track.. very creative stuff JoLa. Also good to see you with a pick in your right hand. This was your best video yet, by a mile!
November 3, 2019 at 8:20 pm #149484Canada MooseParticipant
I believe there used to be a band called Country Jola and the Fish: was that you? They wore cool cowboy hats too.
super recording Jola, and that thumb pick has always appealed to me but I could never get the hang of it. Well done pardner; i hear Nashville a-callin’

November 4, 2019 at 5:42 am #149635Dave KParticipant
That was great, Jola! Loved that you played the rhythm and then played the lead over your own rhythm playing (rather than a jam track). Love the new guitar! Has a great crisp sound to it that worked perfectly for your lead. Awesome as always!
November 4, 2019 at 8:35 am #149667Stuart PParticipant
That was great JoLa, good tone and timing, and your video editing is on point!
November 4, 2019 at 12:14 pm #149705David BParticipant
It seems to me you’ve been not wasting this time I’ve been away.
Your sound and tempo sounds better to me.
I think your trade fender2Loar has been a good idea !!!
also … your video presentation is clearly more elaborated and tasty.

very nice rendition and another lesson I didn’t know existed! now I have to check it out.
you probably know Colter Wall, but if not, give him a listen, I think you’re gonna like him.
I will copy your idea some day and will also be two of me 🙂
November 5, 2019 at 1:44 pm #149816
Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful comments! This was a fun challenge and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Hi JoLa, that was really nice! (By the way, I’m working first one posted to the last, here’s where I am.)
November 11, 2019 at 8:58 pm #150225AndreMParticipant
If you read this, i have post in the forum tutorial section, just want some info on how you did the two different videos, i have an idea but must be a pain to synchronise that. Let me know plz.
November 20, 2019 at 11:47 am #150853Robert BParticipant
Really nice. Obvious talent. Like others, I love the hat. I prefer a Fedora, but I live in cowboy country so I’m pretty sure I’m the only one around here who doesn’t wear a baseball or cowboy hat. I better move to New York.
