President Obama has finally spoken on this tragedy that is surrounding the way that the VA has treated our veterans. He has vowed to get to the bottom of it and correct it. For the sake of our veterans, I hope he does.
He has made promises like this in the past and has failed to deliver. Time will tell
He first said that he heard about the VA problems thru the news agencies but it was later revealed that he was told about it when he took office in 2009. Ooooppppsss!!!
If Obama was told about it in 2009 when he took office, that means that the Bush administration was aware of problems. If that is true, what info was given to President Obama and how long did the Bush admin know about it. I hope that they will follow this issue back as far as necessary.
These are the kinds of things that veterans and those who haven’t served needs to be very vocal about. Our veterans deserve better. This transcends partisan politics

Although I’m a Vietnam Vet and have used the VA hospital numerous times, I only have positive things to say. But I know some VA hospitals have problems finding competent workers to fill their staffing needs.
The sad situation is our politicians treat all citizens, not only Veterans, but all as second class citizens. The truth is, they honestly don’t care other than showing some fake PR stuff publicly. I do still have a faith in them, I’m sure actually a few are working for all citizens, and I find that our President has made a positive difference in the life of the soldier and the US citizen too. The VA has changed and truly these days it has a lot to offer, just that the Veteran has to search it out and ask for it.

I think services that they provide and the doctors, nurses, etc do great work for the patients. It seems that their hand are tied in many circumstances. The admin of the VA that is where the issue is. I’ve known many that have recd really good medical treatment at the VA
Its when people who need treatment have to wait 3-6 months to be seen by a Dr, some with cancer, some with PTSD that led to suicide, when it takes that long to get treatment – all so some of the managers can get a bonus – its just wrong
Its also concerning that if this is the way that the government ‘manages’ health care providers for the VA, what will healthcare be here in the States once Obamacare is fully implemented? That remains to be seen

The solution is very simple. Politicians need to find out what other countries that have national health care for all citizens, take what works for them and improve what doesn’t. What I think most countries have in common is that they have govt. doctors with govt run hospitals. Also private practices, too. And they don’t have this $5000 deductible before you get to use what you are paying for. I can’t believe that such nonsense still exist in a country like the USA, but it does. There are govt controlled cost at every thing a doctor does and with the medications too. (ex. here in Japan, I go to the hospital, see a specialist, get necessary treatment all in one visit, get medications, pay the deductible 30% at time of service and my cost is around $30, that’s it.) Private insurance is available, they usually sell the 30% deductible and overseas travel health insurance, no one loses a job. Everyone must join the system, including foreign residents. You don’t have the national health card with you, you don’t get treated, you go home and get it. You haven’t joined the system, you don’t get treated, very simple and effective. Now if you have an emergency and rushed to the hospital, maybe you are unconscious, you’ll get treated, but when you wake up and they find you have no national health insurance because you simple don’t want to pay for it, well, they simple don’t want to and maybe legally don’t have to continue treating you. You are out the door. And yes, they will collect what’s owed to them for their services, got a job, you won’t see a paycheck for it, also you’ll end up getting fired. This country is controlled, but “just” in its fair treatment toward its citizens and legal resident foreigners. Not like America, no welfare to pay for dead beats. No sympathy here either, they let you die. Is it fair.

I think Japan’s health care sounds interesting. Thanks for posting how it works.
I’m not so much against national health care as I am against what is being rolled out. When you have a ‘mandatory’ system but there are certain companies, corporations and labor unions being allowed to opt out of it for certain reasons – Is that fair?
Then they make employers provide birth control for their employees? This one gets me….why should this be the responsibility of the employers? And does that mean that if you have employees that are past child bearing years that they still have to provide it? What has happened to personal responsibility? If a person requires birth control, let it be part of the medical benefits…..seems like a common sense solution to me. That would allow those like the Catholic Church and hobby Lobby to hot have to worry about suing the government since their core beliefs doesn’t believe in thatI said in an earlier post that that the ACA or Obamacare as its known was drafted by the Democrats behind closed doors. No one except progressive liberals. They didn’t include tort reform which is a huge factor in the cost of health care. Malpractice insurance is ridiculous. The ortho surgeon that did my shoulder surgeries told me how much he has to pay – and sorry, too much Percocet during that visit, I don’t remember the exact figure – but it was outrageous. Yet, American doctors must carry that and the cost is passed onto the patients.
Drug companies won’t allow the name brand drugs go to generics for like 10 or 15 years – all protected by laws. Its how they pay for R&D for new drugs, or so they say. I understand that companies have to be profitable but that goes beyond belief.
The ACA is 2700 pages long. My wife works in medical billing at a local hospital, billing for durable goods – canes, crutches, wheelchairs, braces, etc. Since Obamacare has started taking effect, They will have to bill for something 2-3 times before they get paid b/c neither side really understands all of the regulations. All of that is added into the cost that is passed on to the patient. Before a system like Japan’s could be implemented here, we would have to get all of the profiteers and cons out of the system, those who are milking it for all its worth. Yep, you guessed it – gonna take a long time before that will happen

I should add that, yes, things are done at the national level, everything is turned in there, but everything is also done at the local/city level. All billings from the doctor are sent to the govt. office for verification of treatment and payment. With this information, the govt then sends you the receipt to verify if it is true or not. This cuts down on fraud in the system. No, its not 100% fraud free, but its the best that they have thought up so far to combat fraud. There’s more to this, but I just kept it simple and clear to understand.
Note: If you are out of a job and can not pay the health premium, all you do is go to the city and report that you are unemployed. Simple. You are not billed then, but, you are still covered by the health insurance, cool isn’t it. Here in Japan, you report your income filling to the city that you live in, not Tokyo. They know if you are working, not working, dead beat, handicapped, and unfit to work. You go to the city in person to fill out the paper work, no attorney involved. You can’t fake being handicapped and try to go on disability, and also there is a reason people try not to commit fraud on this, they make you go to a rehabilitation center to work and there is where you pick up your disability check. Don’t show up the centers, you simply don’t get paid. They even have vans to come to your house to pick you up. Yes, this all cost money, but fraud is very very low in this country. I heard that in the States its normal to commit fraud and even get your monthly disability check. Hmm, sounds so funny to me. Never or rarely would that happen unless you know someone in the city office that does the paper work, if caught, prison time for that person too. Police are everywhere in this country and they police all aspects of ones life, including getting a drivers license, you go to the police station to get it.The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

Much of what you are describing is due to the importance that the Japanese/Asians place on honor.
My uncle was a Merchant Marine captain, sailed around the world many times. He used to comment how the Japanese placed such importance on not embarrassing your family. If you did something to disgrace them, the term was that “you lost face”. In other words, you were shamed faced. That is something that is not thought about in the USA except in some areas.
I know those in the South and Appalachia whose families had been there for generations are mostly respectful toward their kin folks. I’m sure that there are others as well.In fact, if you look at the news of the ferry that capsized recently in South Korea, one of the government leaders who was over that resigned because in his words, he had brought shame to that dept.
