In the middle of the week, I realized I wasn’t going to play the Jimmy Rogers piece accurately enough to post it (EP097, a great lesson and one I’m going to stay with for E). Instead here’s my take on “Catfish” (roughly corresponding to EP058, which is a Muddy Waters/Jimi Hendrix lesson).
Catfish2c-EP0582c-3-December-2017
The challenge—for me, anyway—was to stay within the licks of the song and keep it interesting. To do that, I kept it short, and I ventured out of the licks anyway (going up 2 octaves without making it better, pointlessly), but I don’t think it’s always interesting. I’m going to keep playing it. I’m trying to learn the parts in Bobo Thomas’s “Catfish Blues” and in Willie Nix’s “Just Can’t Stay” numbers 6 and 21-22 on this playlist. A hint of Eddie Taylor part in “Just Can’t Stay” crept into my version with the repeated E on the 4th string, but I need to work on the descending part—it’s not supposed to sound like Ten Years After’s “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.”

Thank you for listening and your comment, John.
I started to write a long reply here, but I decided to put that at the bottom and just say “hey, thank you” to everyone after their comments. Since yours was first—and thank you for getting it started in a nice way—I put this explanation here.

Don,
Very authentic sounding and good rhythm playing. Sounded like it could have been an early recording from one of the blues masters.

Thank you, Tim! If you listened to the video, I’m sorry, it was Robert Petway in 1941. My version was attached as an M4a file.
If you actually listened to the attachment, thank you, I really appreciate your comment (I appreciate your comment either way, don’t know how to say exactly what I mean).

Don, I think this might be one your finest postings so far. Great dynamic, well played, perfect timing. It caught my (Musical) attention right from the first note and had me foot thumping and finger snapping all the way through.

Thank you, Kevin, I fear the worst here. If you listened to the video, it was Robert Petway in 1941. My version was attached as an M4a file.
Either way, I really appreciate your comment, and I understand your disappointment when you hear my solo guitar version.

Hi Don, no worries. I was listening to both attachements and my comment refers to your version for sure.

Either way, I really appreciate your comment, and I understand your disappointment when you hear my solo guitar version.
There are so, so many great versions of this song. One of them is one of my favorite blues songs period, Eddie Taylor’s “Stroll Out West” in Bb, and MANY of them are favorites, so I’m glad to finally get started on my little conception—with as much theft as I’m capable of.

This is fine blues guitar Don, it reminds me of going to see blues guitarists and singers in the late 50s in Bristol, England. It was very influential on me, and not just me!! The British interest in the blues began around that time. American musicians brought over by Chris Barber, a jazz band leader.
So thank you for posting this. I love the whole thing.

Thank you, Martyn, after reading your comment, I’m afraid you listened to the video of Robert Petway’s 1941 original. My version was attached as an M4a file. Oh well! I’m going to keep this one in my repertoire for sure, and after several months, I’ll repost it (when I get it in good shape, I think I’ll upload the sound file to YouTube so I can add it to the playlist).
Either way, I really appreciate your comment, and I understand your disappointment when you hear my solo guitar version.

Don, you definitely have your own musical signature.
That’s a really cool blues. Very cool.Wilfried
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Thank you, Paul, I’m hoping you listened to the M4a attachment. If you listened to the video, it was the mother of all “Catfish,” Robert Petway’s 1941 original.
Either way, I really appreciate your comment, and I understand your disappointment when you hear my solo guitar version.

Thank you, Richard, Did you listen to the M4a attachment? (No need to write a reply.) That was my minute and a half of the song. If you listened to the video, it was the original “Catfish,” recorded in 1941 by Robert Petway.
Either way, I really appreciate your comment, and I understand your disappointment when you hear my solo guitar version.

No disappointment what so ever Don. I did listen to your track, twice. I thought it was a very special and distinctive sound. You have cultivated this distinctive sound that I really enjoy. I look forward to more.

Thank you, Richard!
Even though we already discussed this, I’m sorry about the way I posted this with the playlist at the bottom looking like the end result, and not clearly labeled otherwise. I can only imagine your disappointment when you listened to the M4a attachment.
If I could sing and play like that…

Hi Luca, thank you for listening and commenting.
That is about what I do, even though I’d love to be playing more electric, playing in the early morning hours in my apartment, that isn’t going to happen regularly any time soon. Oh well!

Good morning, my embarrassed apologies to anyone who thought there was singing on my cut. That playlist is full of mostly estimable versions of “Catfish”; the voice you hear on the first one is Robert Petway’s, on his 1941 original.
Mine is the modest minute and a half of acoustic guitar on an M4a attachment.

Thanks to everyone who listened, and especially to everyone who commented.
My goal here is to keep working on it, so I can groove for 4 minutes in one register/position and keep it interesting. Even though I kind of knew where these riffs were and even played them in different contexts, this week was the first time I tried playing the song. I’m hoping for some improvements when they become second nature as a whole.

Here’s how I sorted it out this morning. I want to settle on the order and number of repetitions, then get the rhythm riffs tight before proceeding. This version is still tentative, but there’s nothing here that I won’t play. Thanks for listening.

No Don, I listened to both the video soundtrack and the M4a, I understood the difference and my comments were about the M4a track. So I’ll repeat myself and tell you that I like your playing very much and completely understand the sound you’re trying for. Like I said, it reminds me of some of the music I heard in Bristol in the late 50s early 60s. Gritty, hard and sometimes a little bleak.
Keep up the good work.

Thank you, Martyn, that is what I’m going for on this song for sure, I’m glad you picked up on it. On others, I try to be a little more lighthearted sometimes.

I think this is the best you have done. Counting along, the rhythm seemed rock steady, even staying that way in your solo cadenza towards the end, and coming back in squarely on time. And you did that without losing the feel, which has always been your strength. Very nice to hear. Guitar sounds great as well.

Thank you for listening and commenting, Duffy!
That’s regular practice for anyone who wonders (I should be way further along if you consider all the time I’ve spent in the last 3+ years, but practicing/playing is fun). It’s also working with time-tested riffs that lock in if/when you play them right.

Don,
Really enjoyed listening to this. Wish you posted your playing more often. Beyond the technique, you playing has a timing and feel which I suspect in part comes from a lot of listening in this style.

Don,
Awesome! I just love this!! In fact, I would like to learn it! It is just so primal and amazingly cool sounding! You played it so, so well. I can’t say enough about it. I really like this sound.
Thanks so much for posting this piece.
Cheers, Debra
