Wow Bryce, you are definitely moving into a new level. When are you going to quit your day job? That was totally flawless, and difficult to play.

When I can improvise like that and not just play it rote. Ha! I have the technical mechanics but I feel I still have a big gap in my understanding as far as music theory goes. I just need to put in the time to memorize, understand, experiment and apply things. You seem to have a good grasp on those things Steve. Basically, it all boils down to time and I have been spread thin this last year due to a work project that hopefully will let up in February.

Bryce, I envy you! Because of you I wanted to learn the same lesson and try to make it better, well I did not fail, but better I am definetely not! And yeh, you defintely “did not go down in flames”!

I agree with Charjo, don’t be so hard on yourself Kamen. I envy many members playing on here as well but I have realized I just have different strengths and weaknesses.

Terrific, Bryce, I loved it! Really nice sound too – was the new Flint in there?
-
December 1, 2017 at 10:46 am #85974
Ha Ha! I was so excited to post I forgot I recorded a rig run down for this lesson. I revised my post to include the video if anyone is interested. The short answer is yes the Flint was used for Reverb.

Bryce, As I said on your Facebook, you must be growing accessory metatarsi and interdigital webs with this amazing chickin’ pickin’. That’s probably as hard an AM lesson as there is. You’ve come a long way, baby. I know exactly what you mean about the gap between creating original improvisation versus technical skill and memorization but that’s the long term goal and you’ve got many years to get there.
P.S Kamen you’re way too hard on yourself.

Yeah dude that’s the way..btw your imprvs are terrific..you got the next level. It just matter of time and you’ll be able to improvise as well
Keep up the good work

That was excellent Bryce! Your hybrid picking is enviable for sure, that’s an area I struggle terribly. Great work, you’re a bit younger than many of us here. Plenty of time for the other stuff. I imagine the weekly jams are helping you grow as well?

December 1, 2017 at 10:49 am #85975
THe Jam really do help. I’m actually spending more time learning to play and sing some new songs than I have been guitar playing of late. It is nice to Songs I can lead at the jam. Playing with people helps you improve. Playing with professionals like I do really helps you improve.

Awesome, Bryce! I know this lesson backwards and forwards. You hit every tough lick perfectly, and timing was right there. Someday I hope to be able to play this as good as you. I will keep practicing.
Very inspiring. Way to go!!!

Bryce,
That was perfect! I’d say that ranks up there with some of your finest guitar playing.

Thumbs up Bryce! That was just great. Well done. Great sound, played great and great technique of your right hand.

Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Very enjoyable, Bryce….You’ve come soooo far. But I get what you’re saying. Many of us have become mechanically better guitarists capable of imitating most of what Brian provides for us. (to varying degrees of course) The creative/music theory side is the other half of the equation that is often brushed upon (as take-aways) in AM lessons but not explored in depth as this is not the approach that Brian has chosen. That being said, I’ve had more fun and played pieces that I had previously thought to be out of reach by following Brian’s method. I plug in the music theory part of my learning by augmenting what I do on AM with private lessons as well. This requires a bit more practice time needless to say. I’d also comment that for on-line learning, AM’s approach is the only approach that I’ve ever taken that successfully enabled me to play what was being taught, primarily due to the depth of Brian’s breakdown and the teaching aids provided.
Great playing Bryce…..

Nice run down, Bryce….I didn’t know you were into pedals…..Are you still using the PV classic 30 amplifier as your mainstay?

I have been using my Fender Blues Deluxe of late. Classic 30 still has its place still though.

Sounded great, and really clean and accurate. The quick country lessons are as hard as they get. Great job on this Bryce.
I have to laugh about your pedal board. You have said several times that you shy away from modelers because you like simplicity… Have to say, though, that the end result sounds great.
As for the improvisation, it just has to be practiced like everything else. The trick, for me, has been trying to figure the difference between practicing improvisation and noodling. Noodling leads nowhere; practice makes me better. But how to tell the one from the other? Best answer I have now is by placing some limitations on what you are doing when improvising. (Brian’s two or three note improv lessons are great examples of that.)
-
December 3, 2017 at 6:03 pm #86681
Point taken about the pedals Duffy and it is funny. Thanks for pointing that out as I got a chuckle about it.
It is funny you mentioned modeling amps Duffy. I just said to my wife, well…maybe I should get a modeling amp one of these days. Ha! I think your Katana is pretty slick but I might save up and get a Kemper or Helix but that is a long ways off as I have many other things I on my gear lusting list before then.
Good tip about improvising with fixed limits.

playing this demanding lesson so fluidly and without any noticeable mistake is an achievement you can really be proud of, Bryce. The tone is the icing on the cake. I enjoyed this very much, thanks!

Bryce, Wow, awesome playing man! I think all of us can relate to what you are saying about improv (that’s an art in itself)-Regardless, the tone was fantastic, the technique flawless. I know it’s a lot of notes and there’s some really long runs there, you delivered like a pro-nice vibrato. Bravo!

Smokin!! Gotta be one of your best posts yet. Totally agree playing jams and open mics is a great way meet and play with other musicians, although I don’t get out as much as I used to its something I’ve always done. Since I can belt out a tune I’ve always been a singer/rhythm player but for me an improv ( which I do more of since joining activemelody ) at the jam usually starts and ends with go to lick or walkup, in between I try to connect with feel of the vocal line and the groove of drum and bass but more often than not I end up going with a couple of go to licks. Amazing feeling when it clicks and you’re totally in the groove.
Scott
P.S. ( singer/rhythm always in demand )

Excelent Bryce !!!
Really good, I think you improved a lot since 1st video I saw form you.
Maybe you could suggest to have some kind of “before and now” posts to show people improvement since their first post.
Really nice

BTW Bryce, Is that the 40 watt Blues Deluxe you are using.. Of so, can you let me know how you had is set up.. also what channel you were using. I have that amp and I struggle with the sound I get from it., I really likeg the tone you were getting..
Thanks,
Mark-
December 3, 2017 at 6:51 pm #86711
Yes the 40 watt one. Here is a pic. It might have changed a little but that’s my current settings. I didn’t use any amp reverb.
I would have to reEQ it if used a different guitar. My Tele is super bright compared to my Strat.
