The funny thing is, I can sit down and play all kinds of cool fingerstyle stuff non-stop relatively flawlessly for half an hour or more, but today when I hit the Record button, I couldn’t think what to play next. It’s a case of mind-wandering caused by all the holiday season distractions.
The first two verses came from Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightnin” and “Spoonful”. And somewhere in there I inserted Eric Clapton’ licks from “Hey Hey”. And of course, many of the licks came from various ActiveMelody lessons. And finally, a few licks were just stuff I invented. So was this actually improv? I guess it might qualify, because I was just randomly inserting licks from my lick library. Cutting and pasting.

Oh, yes, this record button. I know what you mean, Steve.I was on stage from my childhood, didn’t felt any scene fever, but here, behind the red button everything changes. WHY?
Another great blues from you, where did you find the tabs?

Thank you Steve for a nice eclectic mix of acoustic blues licks, the finished performance had a relaxed feel which I thoroughly enjoyed, thanks.

Steve, I have more than enjoyed your creation. Of course I can not judge it, but it was not noticeable that the red button influenced you. You’ve just played differently for a long time; this track is a great blues version. Perfect, every second.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

If you were off your game in a recorded session I’d love to be a spider on the wall in a relaxed practice session. Good stuff, Steve.

I didn’t have any tabs, I just listened to the original recordings and tried to copy what they were doing. If couldn’t figure out exactly what they were playing, I just made something up that sounded similar. Howling’ Wolf, for example, usually only plays one chord, so I had to develop suitable licks for the 4 and 5 chords.

Very cool showplay Sunjamr, yours was the first I watched so far for this monthly Novembers .. Nice little parlor Taylor too, great sound with both mic and instrument plugged recording , this alternating genre is always a great workout and I enjoyed the listen much enough to watch it again before watching the other submissions! Keep working out with this stuff!
ps,, I hear John Fogerty fingerstyle stuff , yes cool!

You put that together like a real pro Steve, love that style. I have that same GS Mini, but I can’t make it sound like that….

Started out with a Fogerty Suzi Q groove and took a trip to many other places. I even felt an early Beatles vibe around the 2:30 mark. The fantastic journey. Well done.

Well, well, Steve! You played your “uninspired” improvised blues with “fading attention span” way better than I can play on my best day! Not only that, the recording sounded pristine, crisp and clear – a pure pleasure to listen to, I can never get “enough of that”! 😉

Steve, my Man, that was just awesome. I think that’s one of your best yet. Was that just one continuous playing on one video? That’s sure how it looked to me. Certainly I would call this improvisation. I dawned on me here that you, like Brian, seem equally as good on acoustic guitar fingerstyle, as on electric with a pick.

Steve, that was inspiring. We all of us have probably got licks that we’ve picked up along the way from different sources, some that we use regularly and some that may be half forgotten. The clever thing that you have demonstrated here is the ability to meld them together seamlessly into a great sounding rendition. Once again, thanks for your advice about solving my recording problems!

Hey Larry, that was all one take, but not my first one. I recorded 3 and choose what I thought was the best one, which of course was the last one. All 3 had different licks in different orders, but this one seemed the most coherent.

Hi Steve.
Fantastic bass and picking here. Your tempo is incredible and the licks selected sound awesome.
I have no much musical culture on this style, that’s why it’s sounded like the E.Clapton Unplugged style
As usually, you submit an outstanding job.Congrats.

Steve, You are stringing together familiar, classic blues riffs together. This would be a crowd pleaser if you are jamming live.. You can keep on doing this forever. Very good idea and well played! Hide

Excellent stuff, Steve – this shows a very high skill level. Also the video recording is a very high quality, I am wondering what your doing for lighting ? And what camera is it ?
Now I wanna go and try to play Hey Hey! -

Oh, Smokestack Lightning was kick butt!

The camera is just my iPhone 7 using the front (selfie) camera so I can make sure I’m positioned correctly in the video. The trick is to use natural light coming from behind the camera. iPhones don’t do well with artificial light. Luckily I have two large sliding glass doors plus a couple of windows to let plenty of light in.
