We won the battle! As of today, there are no more community-spread cases of coronavirus. There are some people in hospital, but the source of their infection is known, and all people who have been in contact with that source are known and under observation. So today we have gone into a kind of relaxed lockdown, where lots of business can re-start as long as they can maintain social distancing. People will need to stay home as much as possible for a couple more weeks, just to be sure everything is OK. So I am going off to the hardware store this afternoon, and maybe I’ll go get a coffee just for fun. I see where the businesses in my village have marked spots on the sidewalk where people are supposed to stand while they wait. All the cafes are still takeaway only, but you can order something at one window and pick it up at another – kind of like a fast-food drivethrough, only you have to walk through.
All this was only possible because our lovely Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, put us into lockdown almost immediately as soon as the virus came to New Zealand, and the population agreed to comply. Also, we are lucky because we are an island nation, and it was easy to seal the border. Australia is not far behind, and there is talk of allowing travel between the two countries pretty soon.
