Hi All,
Hope everyone is well.
I’m posting a video here of me playing my first ‘real solo acoustic/electric’ guitar gig. I played in a Rock Band in High School in the 70s, played some Classical Guitar Recitals and provided some Background Music in Coffee Clubs in the 80s. Other than that, it’s been basically songs around the camp fire, singing some songs at school (I’m a Primary School Teacher) and lots of lounge room playing at home from the 90s on.
I know my voice is not great (Apologies to James, Scott and Helen …) but generally I know I can sing in tune. I tried to mix things up and add some guitar work into most songs. Here are some very small clips of 10 of the songs (I did 15 in all).
I even added a version of Brian’s AC/DC Lesson EP195.
Please no tomato throwing!!!
Garry
PS This is one of the reasons I have been missing the Challenges of late, too busy practising!!!

Great stuff Garry and a nice mix of electric/acoustic songs , liking that acoustic slide playing (I wanna hear more👌), your guitar journey has reached new heights, nice vocals especially with the more upbeat songs . Really enjoyed it .

Congratulations Gary! Cheers to all the preparation that got you to this point. Getting up by yourself and playing in public is usually terrifying, but you appeared to be calm and in charge. The good variety of songs you put together really showcased your talents in various styles. I hope it was an enjoyable experience for you and that you do it again. Rock on!

Fantastic, Garry, you sounded great. Really nice mix of songs. Were you as calm as you looked? How did you play and mix the backing tracks?

Ken, there were definitely nerves, believe me. Especially during the solos! All the best! 🥸🎸🥸

Hey John, definitely a bit nervous, mainly with the guitar solo stuff. There were a few errors but I just had to keep on going! I have a small mixer which I’ve had for years and I think this is the second time I’ve used it. I had my laptop connected to the mixer and then through my cousin’s PA System. I certainly learnt a lot and probably would not put as much pressure on myself if I ever get the opportunity to do something like this again. People watching generally only listen to the lyrics if they know the tune and don’t really care about the guitaristic stuff (but of course I do so I have to find a balance). Thanks for asking, I always appreciate your comments and advice. All the best! 🥸🎸🥸

I did a backyard bbq party performance, with another guitarist/vocalist, for work colleagues years ago. We rented a PA system and somehow made it work. We had our amps on the lawn and I think if the grass had been wet we might have electrocuted ourselves. Glad you survived the gig.

Really good performance, Garry – a great mix of styles and I don’t think your voice is bad at all! Mostly, respect for getting up there – on your own – and doing it 👍👍👍🎶🎶🎶

All your hard work and preparation paid off Garry. Excellent guitar playing and vocals. You don’t have to have a good voice to be a good singer.
I liked the variety of Rock and Blues songs.
That was all you Garry. No band to lean on. All Garry.
Very impressive.
I’ve played outdoors before, and it’s hard to get a good sound outside, but you sounded great with a really balanced sound. You must have had a good Soundman.I hope your “Tip Jar” was full by the end of your set!

Hey Garry, holding in nerves or not, you performed like a seasoned professional. I appreciated your point earlier about finding the right balance, that’s so right.
Hope to hear more from you soon,Richard

Garry,
Oh man what an impressive performance. You looked like a seasoned professional. Vocals and guitar playing were top notch. Loved your song selection, I think you and I have the same taste in music. One question, did you use standard tuning for ‘Honky Tonk Woman’.

Hi Clarke, thanks for listening. I tuned down to Open G for Honky Tony Woman. I must say one of the more difficult parts of the afternoon was tuning surrounded by noise. I tuned to Open E for the acoustic slide piece and the Open G for HTW. I only ever tune by ear (remember the tuning fork? I still use one) and I found it hard to hear the lower strings, I must be getting old! Keep on pickin’ and all the best! 🥸🎸🥸

Wow, great performance Garry! I’d have liked to watch and listen to more of your songs, but I know it’s only a highlight presentation! Loved very much your choice of songs (we’ve very similar tastes) and how you played and sang them! Your voice is perfect for blues, and we already know you’re a brilliant guitarist, so no surprise there, but anyway play and sing 15 songs in a row, with acoustic and electric in front of an audience it’s for seasoned pro! Congratulations and I’m sure you’ll be asked to play more gigs!

A round of applause for that singing guitar picker. 👏👏👏👏👏
You can be proud of your performance. Great mix of songs and musical styles. As others have mentioned, your sound quality for an outdoor event is very good. Congratulations, Garry!James

Thanks James. I’ve got to give some credit to my Supro Delta King 10 Amp. It produces a great sound (even though it’s a 5 Watt Amp and 10 inch Speaker) and I ran a cable from the Line Out from the back of the Amp into my small mixer then out through the PA System. All the best! 🥸🎸🥸

I have to say Garry that you are impressive. It is really great the way you can jump into a range of musical styles and just play them in front of an audience like that. I have always fantasized about performing but never really had the guts to try it.
Ok, I agree. You are not James, Scott or Helen but your voice is perfectly respectable and it is great that you are able to add that to your arsenal. Being able to sing as well as play is such an asset. All I can do is give a little bow of respect.

Looks like you nailed your gig Garry. Great choice of music. Takes some chops to get up there by yourself but you delivered. Congrats.

Bravo Garry!
Great mix of tunes on both acoustic and electric showing off your diverse skill set, your rehearsal time paid off in spades. Your vocals sounded fine. The monthly challenge coming up should be a piece of cake after the pressure of delivering your solo performance.

Very cool! First of all, your voice sounds perfectly good. Nice set list you have assembled. You are sounding very professional. But the important question is: Do you have any groupies yet?

Hey Garry,
Well firstly just let me say that that was a superb performance.
Well rehearsed, expertly executed, and a well thought out and chosen set list, you should be very, very proud of that my man.
As you know, I’ve always been a fan of your vocals and I thought the singing sounded top notch here.
You also managed to get a great sound from a minimal set up outdoors.
Take a bow and break out the whiskey you deserve it.
Much respect.
Liam.

Hi Helen,
I’ve been playing most of these songs for the last 40 years but 95% of the time it’s just been me, my guitar and my lounge room! The technology side was the hardest for me to get my head around, organising a PA System, learning how to get the right sound from the mixer, the amp, the guitar and pedals. It’s really tricky to hit the pedal eg the Boost going into a solo and then hitting it again to turn it off going back to rhythm without missing a beat. I definitely learnt heaps and wouldn’t mind playing live again in a similar setting because I would change the key to some of the songs (after hearing myself I think I need to go up a whole step) and play less ‘fiddly bits’ because when the nerves kick in it’s hard for me to play solos really well live. Anyway, that’s if I get another chance. Thanks for listening. Keep on pickin’ and all the best! 🥸🎸🥸

I must say Garry I am impressed! Every once in awhile I run into a one person performance like this and just have to stay for the whole set. Can’t imagine the pressure that must have been on you but you managed that beautifully. You have a great voice and plenty of pickin skills to back it up! Hats off to you.

This is wonderful, Garry. You look confident and comfortable, in your element. Your vocals and guitar technique are beyond impressive. Well done, sir. Love the Stones Honky Tonk Woman rendition. Terrific. I look forward to more of these from you.
Where was the tip jar?

Bravo for your solo gig and performance!! Great songs, singing and playing! I am so amazed about your playing all these different and great classic songs and slide guitar playing. Your (percussive) rhythm is super steady and you really rocked that gig. Nice to see your new supro Delta king amp on stage.
