Well here goes! I have been practising this in the evenings for 2-3 weeks and here’s where I’m at so far, It seemed the more takes I took at filming it the more tense I became and I messed up somewhere different each time, so I settled for this one. Can’t ever imagine keeping along with a backing track!! The end is awful! Haha

Phil! That is awesome!!! Kudos to you for being brave and posting! Good Job!
I like your trills they are way better than mine. I have only made a couple of videos now and I have already noticed that I am not as nervous with each new video. So keep that in mind.
Again, great job! Keep up the good work!
Happy Picking!

Hey Phil, thanks for sharing. I’m really loving seeing these postings – even if they’re unpolished. You did great on this. Cool Strat too by the way. I’ve always had my eye out for a red Strat w/ a rosewood neck.
I think other site members find it extremely encouraging to see that they aren’t alone in their struggles, and sometimes the best way to learn is to learn from someone else that’s trying to figure out what you are. I’m hoping more folks start posting like this – and eventually maybe I”ll create a whole section of the site (organized by lesson number) that has all of these in one place.

Wow! Thank you so much Brian & Bryce for your encouragement, That means a lot to me and has boosted my confidence. I only started playing 2 years ago aged 41 (mid life crisis haha) I am really enjoying the journey and since finding Active melody by chance, I am hooked. Keep up the great work Brian, you are making a lot of people very happy…. Bryce I watched your playing! Awesome dude!

Phil, what I noticed immediately about your playing is that you are so relaxed when playing and that you are smiling too. Your right hand fingering/picking technique was so relaxing as I watch and the hammer on thrill, like wow, a Jimmy/SRV thing going on there.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

I thought you did pretty well amigo! A few dozen more times and it’ll smooth right out!
Is this the only way to post your progress? On you-tube in front of God and everyone? Scares me just thinking about it! I’ll probably look like a deaf deer in the headlights! Frozen! -

Jim (Squid),
What I do when I post a video on Youtube of my progress I upload it with the privacy settings to “unlisted.” This means that it does not appear publicly and you cannot search for it on Youtube for God and everyone to see. It means that you have to send someone a link for them to view the video.
So when I post the unlisted Youtube link on the Active Melody forum site, the only people who have access to view it is those who browser the Active Melody forum. To put this in real numbers. I posted my first video ever on the forum about a month ago using the unlisted setting. To date it has 81 views. I know, since I have not sent the link out to anyone else, those are view from Active Melody forum members.
So you can control your audience size to an extent. Hopefully, that makes you feel a little less nervous. Give it a try on a gradient. You could just recording yourself showcasing your guitar(s) and your favorite things about them. Doesn’t have to be long. Just so you ease into showcasing your playing.
Remember we are all learning and your playing does not have to be perfect to show it. See my latest video post for an example of my less than perfect playing (EP099/100 Attempt (Don’t Be Afraid of Posting Your Playing).
Hope to see you post something soon no mater what it is. 🙂

Thanks for getting back to me Bryce.
So what else does one need? I have a POV camera (similar to a GoPro), a nicer DLR camera with video recording capabilities. But is the audio from something like that good enough or does one need microphones, software…and a bunch of other stuff? I know lots of you folks are using Garage Band, and I do have an I-pod, but not a I-phone.
Thanks again.

Here goes my second attempt at EP092 this evening. I have Managed memorise the whole song phrases, but I need it all polished with no mistakes or pauses before attempting to play along with the backing track. I have really enjoyed trying to get to grips with this track. A Big Thanks to you Brian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48OyNbq7V7E

I liked it Badger, it looks like you’re having some fun with this! And it sounds all kinds of bluesy! Those changes from the 2nd/3rd fret to the 11/12th look pretty challenging to me.
Your laugh at the ending got me laughing too! But the all important question, What did your daughter think? :<) -

Another great job Phil! This attempt was much smoothier than your first. Your practice really shows! You are making excellent progress. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy seeing you become a better player.
Cheers!

Badger,
I wanted to comment on your very relaxed right hand technique and fluid, loose wrist–very good. You are not bracing your right hand on the guitar and have great right hand control. You are obviously having fun, always smiling. That is important. Thanks for posting. Look forward to more from you!

Thank you for your kind encouraging feedback. I feel I must improve on timing but with each of the songs I have worked through, I decide to have a go with the jam track And fall apart, it’s like you panic to stay in time and your fingers do crazy things. Bruce, how do you attack each song as you go about learning it?. My method has been to break the song into 3-4 bite size chunks, where I do not move on to the next part until I have fully memorised it. I do not use a metronome or the jam track during this process, Is this a bad idea? Or am I ok to learn it all and then work on the introduction of the backing track? Cheers Phil

It is different for each song for me. For EP097 I did the following:
I find that I have to watch Brian’s videos and look at the tab until I can play a “rough draft” of the lesson. Then I just play the rough draft over and over again until my muscle memory smooths it out. Then I play with the jam track to find my rhythm and timing problems. I fix those by playing the problem sections with the on screen tab with Brian playing on a loop. Then I practice, practice, and practice some more.
I think the best thing for you to do is experiment and see what works for you. Track your results. If you can play a piece well, think back on what you did and repeat it. 🙂
Cheers Phil!

Cheers Bryce, sorry called you Bruce before!! I think I will go over the previous songs now and try to get timing improved on each with the jam track before moving on to any more lessons right now, cheers Phil
