In my ongoing effort to realize that Clapton Beano sound as closely as possible (while at the same time being as frugal as possible), I recently picked up a used Marshall Class 5 head. At “only” 5 watts, this amp will break up nicely without shattering windows, and the closer you dime it, the closer to that vintage sound you will get, along with some serious volume, even at only 5 watts. This is a no-frills amp, with just a single channel, single volume control, a treble, mid, and bass control- and that’s it.
I went with the head for 2 reasons- 1, I’ve heard bad things about the combos tending to rattle (although this apparently was rectified on later models) and 2, it was readily available at a modest price. Now I need to get a speaker cabinet for it, a topic for which I know not much (always bought combos before). The Class 5 combo version comes with a 10″ Celestine speaker. I have a line of sight on a Marshall 1966b 2×12 cabinet. I know that it will take higher volumes to get the sound to break up with a 12″ speaker vs a 10″, and I would imagine that this would be doubly so with a 2×12. My question to all of you- is the 2×12 overkill for a 5 watt amp? I appreciate all of your thoughts on this!
