I chose EP 217 for this month’s open challenge. I played the first half of the rhythm track as taught by Brian, in the second half I chose different neck positions for the chords, altered some chords somewhat (at one time, I played Em instead of G) and added a few embellishments. I have practiced Brian’s lead-track pretty much to perfection, but when I played it over the rhythm track, it sounded like a cacophony. Therefore, I settled for a minimalistic lead part that leaves enough open space to hear the rhythm part.
Gear: For several months I had the feeling that I “needed” a new acoustic guitar. In December 2019, I had sold four of my old acoustics (tough!), and on 01.01.2020 I felt it’s time to fill the empty space. So I ordered a Yamaha FSX5. It’s made in Japan and took 6 weeks to get to my doorstep. I loved the sound instantly, but somehow I couldn’t warm up to it. This week, however, I got rid of the original Elixir Nanoweb strings (.12-gauge!) and exchanged them for Ernie Ball 80/20 Earthwood Rock& Blues strings with a .10-.52 gauge. My fear that I would sacrifice tone quality because of the thinner strings was unjustified. It still sings! And playing is so much fun! Interestingly, it has almost exactly the same size as my Harley Benton, except that it has a 0.44mm neck width (HB 0.45 mm). Still, both guitars are very different.
Unfortunately, the video doesn’t do the new guitar justice. I played it through my Mooer GE 200 effects-box/interface, but that doesn’t have a “clean” acoustic channel. So I chose a relatively unmodified pre-set, but it still sounds nothing like it does acoustically. Just so you know.
So, enough talking here, I know that this one is full of little imperfections, but I still hope you find it somewhat enjoyable:
