Hello Pickers,
Last month, I tried something new to me, drop D tuning! I have always shied away from alternate tunings but I love the sound of heavy blues so decided to challenge myself and try it out. And.. oh, man.. this turned out to be so much fun, just like playing with a new toy 🙂
This recording was done last week and I had hoped to work on it a bit more but finally decided to leave it as is with the impromptu add-on solo. I discovered that playing with dropped D is an excellent opportunity to practice pentatonic patterns because it all sounds so good to my ear I could noodle for hours! This is EP190 with a tiny bit of influence from EP085 in the improvised part.
Looking forward to enjoying everyone’s submissions over the weekend 🙂

I agree with Richard: I would buy that song. If there were any flaws in it, I couldn’t hear them. Tell us a bit about how you recorded that. I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to get a nice rich sound like that. I mean, that sounds like it was done in a professional recording studio.

Thanks, Steve and Richard 🙂 It’s the pickups, they’re amazing! I have invested in LR Baggs Anthem SL pickups that combine a piezo pickup with a built-in condenser microphone inside the soundhole. It’s the same kind of pickups Brian uses on his acoustic guitars 😉 For the recording, I used Garageband, as usual.

JoLa, I was a bit electrified. What a great acoustic sound! More heat is probably not. Excellent play.
You played through the track with the absolute necessary rest, as it could be.
But, between 1:43 and 1:46 you have completely caught me in your track.
Drop tuning has natural special basics that always sound great,
but here I can only say …. CHAPEUAX. Can I also get a CD?Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

That was fabulous JoLa, You managed to create that deep swampy blues atmosphere. I’ve always loved that lesson and you played it exactly how I would have imagined, brilliant!

Wow Jola, excellent playing and loved the solo! Drop D is real fun to play with, especially with an electric guitar with some heavy dirt. I think this might be my favorite one from you, but they are all great!

Smokey blues. Wow that was nicely done. Great videography too! I like the overlay of you playing rhythm and lead. I haven’t even attempted alternate tunings.

Terrific. This could easily have been an outro concluding a particularly dark episode of Twin Peaks. Very atmospheric!

Jola,
That was so good that I wished I had played that. I really enjoyed it up to the point where I thought I just had a stroke but then I recovered to enjoy the strong finish. Congratulations, that was really great.

Really cool JoLa. That droning bass note gives the piece a dark mysterious vibe that pulls the listener in. You played it very well. Loved the tone of the acoustic.

Hi Jola, excellent stuff, I think you have come far in your guitar journey. Thought I had double vision there for a minute ;-). Sound quality is really high. I never really understood the purpose of drop D tuning, I must look into that.

Beautiful JoLa – that was a lot of fun to listen to – you took that little composition to a whole different play by doing it on acoustic and then overdubbing a lead on top of it – very dark, and moody sounding. that sounded like a film score. Cool guitar btw 🙂

Thank you everyone for the great comments! Judging by the descriptive words you guys used, such as “dark”, “swampy”, “mysterious”, “moody”, “they burned my house down” blues (LOL), “haunting” and so on – I know I have accomplished what I was going for 🙂 This was really a lot of fun and I’ll be looking for more drop D tunes to learn.

The great thing here is the steady thump you kept up with, making it ooze atmosphere. Playing and sound we’re excellent. I see lots of improvement in your playing and in your improv.

This is so cool Jola, it’s amazing how tuning down one string can change the sound so dramatically. Loved it, I’ve added it to my must learn folder.

I am humbled by this performance. The coordination between the thumb and the rest of the fingers is tough to learn.
