New to the East Texas area, have been entertained by many local, wonderful young guitarists/singer/songwriters working on their careers as professional musicians but I would soooo love to find that community of folks who just like to get together to SHARE their music to enjoy, learn from and motivate each other.
If you’re out there, please connect.

Good idea. I think most of us have the same question, but few of us live in a place where we can easily find that community of grass roots musicians who just play for fun. In my case (Auckland, New Zealand), there are Facebook pages set up for most suburbs or neighborhoods, and all you have to do is post the question there. The Facebook pages all have names ending in “Locals”, like “Albany Locals”. So search Facebook for “Lufkin Locals” or whatever and see what you find. Let us know.
If you do find other musicians in your area, and you live in a city like me, the other problem is how and where do you get together? For example, I know a good drummer, but he can’t easily bring his drum kit to my house, and his music studio is the size of a bathroom. My friend the bass player has moved into a condo, so it’s not that easy for him to carry his gear down to his car and make his way to my house. There is an amateur blues club in Auckland which meets once a week, but it’s an old boy’s club that is so fraught with bureaucracy, rules, and regulations that it’s quite uninspiring. Nevermind, there’s always Youtube.

SUNJAMR,
Thanks for the post here and the suggestions. I did try your idea of looking for Lufkin Locals on Facebook, but only came up with local advertisers, no musicians or music related items. Good try though.
When I lived in Arizona, there were a wide variety of groups of local music folks who did just that – got together on a regular basis just for the joy of playing/sharing music or listening to the player. On any given night one could find an “Open Mic” or jam session waiting to welcome musicians or audience. It’s where I gained confidence to play and sing. Guess I expected that that “should” be a normal thing in this community as well. The same kind of music community existed where I grew up – in New Orleans, but in those younger days I wasn’t as focused on playing music and anyway it was an adult activity.
That music community in Northern Arizona (near and in Sedona, Az) was made up of mostly retirees, but younger musicians were also welcome and many took part. Of course CoVid changed everything.
I really miss that music world and it’s one reason I’m so glad to have found you folks here on AMJammers – even though we are “musically-distanced!” I’ll be working on that July Challenge in coming days and digging into more of Brian’s lessons. I’ve decided it’s time for me to dive into learning some slow blues lead.
Ciao for now.
Thanks again for the opportunity to ‘music-chat.’“Laissez les bon temps rouler“

Oh bummer – maybe Lufkin has been taken over by the blue meanies and needs to be saved by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I always thought people in Texas were quite musically inclined. But maybe that’s just the Austin area.

Actually I find it very musically inclined, Lufkin; and Nacogdoches (just up the road) were Willy Nelson’s old stompin’ grounds.
George Strait seems to be the BIG fame name here now, Miranda Lambert’s hometown is nearby and well noted!
That said, this is definitively “Country” country! I’ve not found any places that cater to or even reference anything other than Country, Country-rock, or Western/Cowboy music.
I love all music (“Rap” strongly excluded – sorry, it’s a generational thing.) but the ‘country’ monopoly is a bit disappointing.
And, it seems to be mostly young ‘cowboys’ bent on becoming the next George Strait. There’s no shortage of young male musicians gracing the stages of local events and eateries.
Most often solo acts. I find it interesting that there does seem to be a shortage of bass guitar players! For me, that makes for a stage sound thats a bit lacking.
Maybe it isn’t “ALL ABOUT THAT BASS” but for me, the bass is the “heartbeat” of a music piece. Just my music background I guess. In my past experience nearly everyone who took to the stage wanted a bass player to “back them up.”There yet may be, other folks quietly enjoying there live music privately behind closed doors OR maybe I just haven’t made the right connections. Ive only been here since Dec. 2020. But the active live music community in Arizona that nurtured my thirst for it seems to have no match here.
I did get to do a two hour live music solo mini-concert two Fridays ago at a family friendly bar and grill called “58 Junction.” It was very reminiscent of the bar from the movie “The Blues Brothers” BUT family oriented and no chicken wire (LOL). Four ladies attended and later told me they came purely because they saw on my ad-flyer that I would do some ‘jazz’ tunes. They said they were not disappointed.
YIKES! Sorry Sunjamr, I do tend to get carried away with writing. “Writing” is another of my passions.
Ciao for now,
Marie“Laissez les bon temps rouler“
