“Lover’s Quarrel” July Challenge 2021
One of my most influential “Breakthrough Moments” came when I watched Brian’s lesson EP408, on understanding the “Circle of Fifths!’ As much as I’d tried for ‘decades’ to crack that code it wasn’t until Brian’s patient and detailed explanation that I was finally able to get-it! Even “Guitar Theory for Dummies” hadn’t helped me! And I’d read that section over and over!!
But thru Brian’s down-home explanation, I now feel so empowered as a song-writer!For decades, I’d also been a member of that club of ‘I-really-wanna-be-a-real-lead-guitar-player’ but got lost in the sea of YouTube ‘wanna-be-a-guitar-teachers’ videos. After stumbling upon Active Melody and one of Brian’s lessons several years ago (EP284 Boogie Woogie . . .) I knew I’d found someone from whom I could actually learn something! Finding EP284 and beginning to understand how to ‘pick individual notes’ was truly a breakthrough for me. It would be years before I could retire and fully devote the time to that effort! Though I had been playing simple guitar, merely strumming simple chords for decades it wasn’t until this past year that I’ve begun to go from strummer to budding advanced guitar player!
The “breakthrough” that has excited me even more so came very recently with FINALLY learning from Brian the importance of, the structure of and the proper use of the Pentatonic Scale! And when I heard him say that the Pentatonic Scale is the only scale he’d learned because it allows him to play anything he needs to – it was really life changing for me!! I’d first picked up a guitar at the age of 13, (the Beatles had come on the scene) but I always “knew” I’d never really be a guitar playing musician or play lead guitar like so many of the people that I admired, because I’d NEVER learn to play the entire fretboard and learn ALL the scales and modes!! Now at age 72, I’m so incredibly happy with my own growth and potential growth as a “guitarist” since Brian has helped me understand that I don’t have to be a rocket scientist to really unlock the magic of the fretboard!!
Joining this month’s challenge is such a rewarding experience for me because I’ve focused on my personal introduction to the Pentatonic Scale and adding a lead guitar element to a backing track that I also found and fell in love with about the same time I first discovered Active Melody. The track is by Sabastien Zunino and I find it so soothing and beautiful. I’d always wanted to “play along” with it and thanks to Brian’s lessons on the Pentatonic Scale, using that scale, and lessons on ‘phrasing’ I’ve really enjoyed coming up with my FIRST EVER lead guitar performance!! Ta-Daaa! I call my contribution to this work: “Lover’s Quarrel” and tried to SING the emotion into the strings as Brian has taught. Like a two voice guitar opera, I do hope you enjoy listening to it – WARTS and ALL – as much as I adore playing it!!
It’s just the beginning for me! I can hardly wait to further my understanding of the Blues Scale and perhaps even come up with more Bluesy creations of my own.
Brian’s teaching style/expertise and the encouragement of the AM family are priceless! Thank you all.Marie Jarreau
Sorry – I love writing as much as music! LOL

JFL,
Thanks so much.
I made that change as you suggested.
Does that mean that ALL THE WORLD can see it or just you guys?Marie

Unlisted will allow someone to view the video only by clicking the link.
The world won’t be able to search for, or see this video without access to the link. So it’s a safe bet that only the AM Community will see this (if this is the only place the link is posted)

And don’t worry, even if you post a video as “Public”, hardly anyone will watch it except for us AM members. I’ve been posting videos as Public for 6 years, and never once received a mean comment. There aren’t any trolls among us musicians. Try it sometime and see what happens.

Hi Marie:
When you post a video as “unlisted” only those with the link can see the video, i.e., it’s not “public”. That’s awesome that you have such a clear view of what you want to accomplish as a player. Your video sounds great and musical. Your guitar looks like a Taylor – cool.

Hey Tom,
Actually I’m easily distracted by those “shiny objects” too as I love soooo many different guitar styles and elements, but I’ve currently made the commitment for a long time yearning to learn to play more fingerstyle lead guitar. Like many others I’ve heard from I’m so pleased to have found Active Melody and Brian’s gift AND generosity of sharing his knowledge and love of guitar!Yes, It’s a Taylor T5z. I am a rather small of stature person and the angle of the iPhone camera makes the guitar look much larger than it is. I bought it several years ago with bonus funds I’d received from a lengthy, wildland fire fighter season (I was working in the PIO shop – long hours.) – but I’m only now becoming acquainted with all the lovely features of the T5z! I have several other acoustics, classicals, parlors etc., but the T5z is currently the star of my guitar crew.

Hey TonyS,
Yeah :0) To fit the “melody.”
I like to think it IS possible to have a genuine disagreement that doesn’t have to escalate to ugliness, but rather just a “difference of opinion” not rage-filled division that taints the lovers’ relationship.“Laissez les bon temps rouler“

Nice one, Marie. It looks like you have a nice recording studio complete with a DAW. Why didn’t you use it?

July 31, 2021 at 8:49 pm #264320
Steve,
Yes, I also enjoy ‘fiddlin’ with home recording and production. While I lived in Arizona a few years ago a good friend/music acquaintance got me interested and I’ve been able to put together a modest inventory of studio gear that fits my basic needs. I love that work as much as playing guitar and singing!
I’m using Cubase5 and a Tascam 428 interface among other bits of recording gear. I’m definitely still in the early stages of learning this craft.
Actually I did have my Taylor T5z plugged into the DAW for sound with the backing track also playing through the DAW. The video was recorded with iPhone picking up sound from the studio monitors. Hey Steve, if you have some pointers/tips for me on a more efficient/practical method of using the DAW for this I would be most appreciative of any shared info. :0)“Laissez les bon temps rouler“

Hey Marie, you seem to have developed quite a fan club after just a couple of months! That’s the great thing about this community, they are very supportive and the reason is we have all experienced or are experiencing the same trials and tribulations in coming to terms with being a better player. I liked the melody that you had carved out and, as a gentle hint, I suggest that you try to play it moving down the neck by using patterns 4, 3, 2 and back to 1 which I believe would be the fist position E minor pentatonic. ( I’m assuming that you were playing in this pattern on fret 12). Loved the Taylor guitar by the way.

G’Morning Denise,
I’m sincerely thrilled to be among so many kind and generous music friends here since the “upside-down events of the world” have scattered my previous “close at hand” friends to the wind and no longer have the opportunity to gather at any given moment for an impromptu jam session or to try out a new tune together. BUT the upside for me is having found the rich music-field of friends here at Active Melody! This has definitely given me a new outlook and the encouragement to reach farther into the bag music opportunities.Good Wishes to you,

I was amazed that the arrangement was all done from the 12th fret. It was rather a happy melody and so kudos to you for creating an interesting note selection in this space. This has more potential to go further and a few peeps have already mentioned a few suggestions. I might challenge myself to come up with a composition within just this one boundary.
-
August 1, 2021 at 8:14 am #264680
Laurel,
Yes, I’m excited to try out the suggestions for this piece and I’m thrilled that you may have been inspired from something that I’ve attempted. I’m looking forward to what you may come up with. Music makes the world go ’round! 🙂I love “naming” things and giving them personalities. My original title to my series of notes that came dancing out of the 12th fret was: “Tip Toe Thru The Tapestry,” HOWEVER as the tune progressed and took on better form and melody I could hear ‘two distinct’ voices emerge. They seemed to be talking to each other but with the “discord” of which I’ve heard Brian speak. Discord but not and angry discord. To make a long story short, first I heard in these notes a young teen daughter trying to convince her mom to allow her an activity for which mom does not approve – but still at an age and relationship in which they both love and respect each other the ‘argument’ does not go to ugliness, merely disagreement. HENCE, that discordant but HAPPY feeling.
However the scenario could also fit a pair of lovers, who disagree but still love and respect each other – yet each holding firmly, lovingly to their points of view. Hence: “Lover’s Quarrel” is a more melodious title than “Mother Daughter Argument” Ha-Ha-Ha!Good Wishes to you Laurel,

I doubt you can quarrel with my observation that you love music and the experience of making it, so full speed ahead and welcome to the challenges! A suggestion: playing your lead lower on the fret board in the beginning of a song gives you a chance to move up to the higher notes later in the piece to add variety, emphasis and power. Also, the tone on most acoustic guitars is its most rich and full lower down — not necessarily in first position, but certainly north of the 12th fret.

Hey Bob,
I actually treated myself to the Taylor T5z a few years ago, and while I have enjoyed getting familiar with its options in my own ‘strumming’ way, I feel it’s time for me to up my own game as a guitar player to showcase more of that lovely git-fiddle’s potential. For years I’ve longed to be able to engage in a bit of finger-picking, but had no idea how to do that with enough expertise to pay respect to the T5z.

Great job on this challenge submission, Marie! Even though you named it “Lover’s Quarrel”, your solo sounded rather cheerful to me, or maybe that’s the idea? 😉
The use of the pentatonic scale in improvising has changed everything for me, too. It definitely was one of my big breakthrough as well.
I have also been eyeing those small Taylor T5z’s, love the way they look and I’m sure they’re easy to play too. Once I get a fat bonus sometime (as if!) I might consider adding one to my family. The only negative thing I heard about them was the pickup quality. I wonder if that has any merit or is it just luck of the draw kind of thing?
Anyway, I love your enthusiasm for learning and for Active Melody, keep it up, it’s nice to have you here 🙂

August 3, 2021 at 11:57 am #265575
Hi Jola,
Yes, for me – finally getting to “speak Pentatonic” is a real eye opening, music-life changing experience!About the ‘cheerful quarrel’ – I’d replied about that to another member so will share those thoughts with you here:
“The original title to my series of notes that came dancing out of the 12th fret against the beautiful backing track by S. Zinino was: “Tip Toe Thru The Tapestry,” HOWEVER as the tune progressed and took on better form and melody I could hear ‘two distinct’ voices emerge. They seemed to be talking to each other but with the “discord” of which I’ve heard Brian speak. Discord but not an angry discord.
Hence: “Lover’s Quarrel” is a more melodious title than “Mother Daughter Argument” Ha-Ha-Ha!”The T5z is very easy for me to play, I have rather small hands and I find it’s a very good fit. I love the onboard sound/tone options, and finally will have time to really explore those options, but even unplugged it has a very pleasant sort-of “playing on the back-porch” appropriate sound/presence.
Not having a wide experience with various pickups, I don’t notice any negative issues with either of the three pickups. I use both the Fishman SA-220 PA system for larger, more open settings and also the Fishman Loudbox Artist for smaller venues, and I’ve always (depending on the location settings) been very pleased with the T5z’s sound rendered.Your warm welcome, and your previous tips in getting me started here are very much appreciated Jola.
Good Wishes,

That’s nice Marie, there s a sweet melody and you choose rights notes that fit well.
I don’t know what is your gauge on guitar, but if not to heavy, do not hesitate from time to time to replace a slide by a bend, it should bring another medium to your watercolor your composition.Where does the white go when snow melts?
-
August 4, 2021 at 8:35 pm #265730
Phil,
I appreciate your note about replacing the slide with a bend. It IS something I’ve been working on, that is, working on getting my fingers to consistently bend and smoothly slide to the next higher note. You’re quite right, that adds such a nice tone, and something a little different. Sometimes it’s worked for me and sometimes I end up mixing the bend and the slide together, with my finger getting held-up on the fret while sliding a note. But I’m working on it. and I can see where bending that string could be an easier/smoother move since there’s no frets to ‘cross’ :0)Regards,

Well this says it all.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Marie, nice submission. I can definitely relate to the comments you made to Denise above. I could use a bit more volume on the submission….i am a bit hard of hearing. It did sound good and I love your enthusiasm. Cheers. Pap
