Can anyone recommend or had experience with a Brand of video editing software that would be suitable for PC. I looked at Adobe Premiere but the amount of negative feedback put me off.
I currently record using iMovie on an iPad connected to a USB condenser mic. but will hopefully modify that in the near future.Richard

I’ve messed around with a few video editors, Adobe, Nero and a few others.
Tbh I didn’t have much joy with any of them, now if I shoot a guitar video( which I’ve not done in quite some time) I edit it in Reaper which is easy enough às long as you remember to put line up marks in both video and guitar recording...Billy..

I’ve used a lot of video editing software during the past 20 years. Adobe Premiere Elements used to be atrocious, but if you wanted to pay the price, Adobe Premiere (the professional version) has always been excellent, and it’s what I used for years. Now Adobe Premiere Elements has been redesigned and improved, so it works properly. On my MacBook I have both Adobe Premiere Elements and Final Cut Pro, and I use each of them depending on what I’m wanting to do. Premiere Elements is faster and easier to use, and I’ve never had a single problem with it. And since it’s by far the most popular video editing software for PCs, there are tons of Youtube tutorials. So you can just go to Youtube and search for stuff like “Adobe Premiere Elements split screen” and voila – many tutorials will appear! I would say a lot of the negative feedback would be from people who have the earlier versions (which were fraught with bugs), or who have computers that aren’t up to dealing with large video files, or who aren’t used to good file management practices. Premiere Elements is cheap enough, so I would suggest just download it and try it. There is a free 30-day trial period, so you have nothing to lose. Not even time, at the moment. But better yet, just buy a MacBook or iMac and use iMovie. The computer version of iMovie is far superior to the iPad version. And later you can upgrade to Final Cut Pro, the professional version of iMovie.

Richard I believe the way to go is Camtasia by Tech Smith. It has an excellent reputation and was used here by Jeff Yielding whom hasn’t been on the forum for a while but was a very active member and posted some quality video. The downside is it is expensive but I think its almost in a league of its own.

I am pretty sure this was done using Camtasia as I messaged Jeff around that time.
There is a free trial period. I don’t use any but one day soon I will be buying this. I do use their program Snagit which is really quite indispensable in my view and would strongly recommend you take a look at it too as bundles are available and once used you wont want to be without it. Snagit is the ultimate screen grabber.

JohnStratYep, my old friend Jeff did use Camtasia, and I PM’d him about it several times. I tried it for a while. But it’s not really true video editing software – it’s specifically designed for the business world, like people who want to do video blogs and online tutorials, and is designed to be integrated into PowerPoint. It can do some editing tricks, but not nearly as many tricks as a purpose-designed video editor. The reason Jeff’s videos looked so good is because he is a really good videographer, with an eye for graphic design and layout.
Snagit is good, but Macs come with a free built-in screen grabber called – strangely enough – “Grab”. That’s the thing about Macs: They may cost $1000 more than PCs, but you save $1000 by not having to buy a bunch of software, since almost everything you need is included for free. Like GarageBand (a DAW), iMovie (video editor), Pages (word processor), Photos (photo editor), FaceTime (like Skype, but much easier to use), etc.

Many thanks for your advice chaps. I bought a new desktop PC last year with a view to running some type of video editing suite. The only Apple product I use is an iPad for everyday use but use iMovie for recording. I am familiar with Adobe products and did use Premiere years ago so I expect the product has changed somewhat. I take note of what you said on that aspect Steve.
My search will continue, but thanks again.Richard

Windows 10 let’s you record your screen with audio, this has been a feature since Windows 10 was launched about 3 or so years ago.
So no need for fancy add ons if you are using a pc...Billy..

I remember using Windows Movie Maker on a PC years ago. It was free and very easy to use. Not sure if it’s still available or if it’s free.

Richard – my college son is really into video production and he turned me on to HitFilm Express. I run it on a cheap Windows laptop and the free express version has all you would need for Active Melody videos. I will say it is not the most user intuitive, but there are plenty of YouTube videos and tutorials out there on it and it is not bad to figure out. I of course just call my son to help. 🙂 I’ve not compared it to any other packages so can’t state how it compares.

Richard,
have you looked at Video Surgeon? It’s very powerful, easy to use and reasonable priced. It’s made by the same guy that does Song Surgeon. I own both but use Song Surgeon a lot more.

Richard,
One thing I forgot to mention is that with Song Surgeon and Video Surgeon is that you can get in touch with Richard Todd the owner and developer of the software and get answers. He also puts out updates and keeps all owners of his software packages informed of what’s going on development wise. he has numerous instructional videos on all his software programs available for viewing. I have used those a lot and he explains things very clearly.
Worth checking out. Good luck!
Gene
