I’m considering another acoustic. Right now I am looking at the Taylor Big Baby or the Yamaha FG830. Any thoughts on either or both of these options?

Hi Scotty, I don’t own either of those guitars but I do know if I was contemplating a Yamaha right now I would definitely go for a YAMAHA TRANSACOUSTIC FS-TA. I played one recently in our local music shop and was amazed at this unique transacoustic sound it produced, it also felt very comfortable to play etc.
Maybe that doesn’t help your choice but food for thought…..Richard

You have to play the guitars; then you realize which one you prefer.
The Taylor Big Baby has Sapele plywood and the Yamaha FG830 rosewood as the back and sides wood.
Rosewood provides a powerful bass, a defined but warm midrange and punchy highs.
Sapele is similar. The wood provides a karen bright tone with not quite as much bass parts.
I would choose the Yamaha.
But that is subjective, because it is pure taste.Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Think about how each feels when you are playing sitting down. Does the top of the body cut into your arm and reduce your blood flow to your fingers (like some of mine do)? Also think about how your hand fits the neck. Yamaha necks feel fat and clunky to me, but that’s only because I have short fingers. I put those criteria above actual sound, because I can either plug in or mic the guitar, then do what I want with the sound.

sunjamr steve said it right, you’ve got to hold it in your hands and play it. Brand names don’t matter to me; it’s how it feels in my hands; you’re going to spend maybe thousands of hours holding and playing this baby, so it’s gotta feel real good in your hands. Sit down and play it for half an hour and if it doesn’t say “I’m your baby, take me home” then try out another and another till you find YOUR guitar. I bought a $50 axe half a century ago and it’s been my best friend forever.

So you are looking at them two right now but can’t decide? my thoughts are both wouldn’t be on my suggestion list..but that’s cause I played enough acoustics to know what I would buy fore my next acoustic..should I want another acoustic

Hi Scott
Judging from the 2 models that you mentioned, it looks like you are in the $500 price range
I would suggest that you also consider some of the models from the Alvarez Artist series. Exceptional guitars in that price range.
I’ve also found that Ibanez and Washburn have several models that be in that price range as well and both companies have improved their quality considerably in the past few yearsIf you went up in price a bit, PRS makes some very nice acoustics that play and sound great.
The Yamaha Trans-acoustic has been mentioned, which is a good guitar but they have others as well that are exceptional such as the AC3RIts also been mentioned that it is so important to actually play any acoustic before you buy it. 2 guitars that are the same brand and model can sound different. Key point is to take your time in making this decision and keep your eyes open for a great deal with a used guitar

Hi Scott,
I had a Big Baby, sold it as I needed an Electro Acoustic to gig with, missed the Big Baby so much I got another one when cash allowed and play it daily! That’s just my view, you have to play them to see which suits you best just like the other people say, but it’s a lovely small guitar with a big sound. Happy guitar buying (always an exciting time in my book 🙂 )

If it isn’t too late I wholly agree with Richard G. I bought a Yamaha FS-GA, it is amazing, I have access to reverb and chorus without plugging into an amplifier. That is really nice for outside practice sessions. When you turn both the reverb and chorus on at the same time it sounds very similar to a 12 string. It is a mind blowing guitar
