We have been in a kind of relaxed lockdown for 2 weeks, where we can travel in our local regions, and visit our extended families, but not friends. But now, on the day after tomorrow, we will be able to resume life as normal, except that we can’t congregate in groups of more than 10 people. This will be reviewed again next week, and if all goes well, life will become 100% normal. However, nobody can enter NZ without a health check and possibly a 2-week quarantine.
We go for several days with zero new cases, then maybe 2 new cases. But all new cases are being found among a small group of healthcare workers who worked at an elderly care center, and they have been careful not to contact people outside their bubbles. So in a few more days, there should be no more cases of coronavirus in NZ.
This is a huge relief for all of us in New Zealand. Our tourist industry has been totally wiped out, but our main source of income – farming – has actually come out stronger. We are rampantly exporting food to the Asian countries, and to America. And there is still plenty left for us local people.
So, what have I learned from this whole coronavirus pandemic?
– family are the most important thing in our lives
– friends are the second most important thing in our lives
– we don’t really need all the things we thought we needed
– having a creative outlet – guitar, art, gardening – is essential
– we don’t need to drive around as much as we thought
– long walks are really good for your health
– it’s important to have a good reliable internet connection
– in times of trouble, the news media is essential
– I would never recommend a career in the tourism or airline industriesI suspect something similar is going on in other countries, and that the world will be better prepared for the next time this happens. Good luck everyone, wherever you are!
