Wow, so many people are having a go at the Star Spangled Banner that I’m thinking Brian should make next year’s June Challenge be to come up with your own original version of it. Or copy Jimi Hendrix, if you can. Once I saw on TV the US Marine Corp Band playing what their research indicated was the tune and tempo of the original version – as sung in the pubs in England. I was surprised that it sounded like a waltz (3/4 time), and had quite a different rhythm to the verses vs today’s version. For example, the current American version holds “PROUDly” for several beats, whereas the original only gave it one beat. Also, it seems the original version was sung at a faster tempo, whereas the current version is sung more like a church hymn.
