The lightbulb moment was when I realized how useful a loop machine can be. The video shows an idea that was developed by putting a riff into the loop machine. Imagine you’ve got a riff going but don’t know what to play over it. Looping the riff allows experimenting with ideas. With a little help from a friend, this idea turned into an original arrangement with bassline and charts in case some jazz cats like it. And they did! More light bulb moments.

Enjoyed your composition Ziggy. Great use of the Looper and tasteful single lines layering it. Hiked from Lake St Clair to Cradle Mountain over 8 days about 30 years ago, one of the best experiences of my life. All the best!

Hi James,
Thanks for your feedback – very much appreciated.
In case this is of interest: Maton Mini + Scherfler acoustic amp = great, rich sound. I’ve used this set-up for 8 years now. Small but very versatile.

A great song extremely well played. That’s one small parlour guitar you have there, you didn’t put it in the washing machine did you?
Lovely shots of part of your beautiful country.-

Nicely done and has inspired me to dig out my looped pedal which I haven’t made enough use of…and only on electric not acoustic as you do so well here. Thanks!

Hi Ziggy:
What a great demonstration of possibilities with looping. As a non-looper who otherwise likes to jam with others, I really appreciate it. Your composition was very catchy. Nicely done.

Hi André,
Thanks for your comments – very much appreciated. Well, looping can be overdone like many things in music. But, it can be great in the practice room and useful to simply collect initial ideas. It’s just another way of going about music and has helped me a lot. I hardly use it in groups but it has come in very handy to introduce new material. Then, turn it off once the groove and other ideas have come across. It saves a lot of time.

Hi Marie,
Thanks for your feedback – very much appreciated. Yes, it’s quite enjoyable when ideas come together. I like to collect little composed snippets in a loop machine. It’s one of my “swipe files”.

Nice loop, Ziggy. I’m a fellow looper also. I used to play with jamtracks mostly, but after I got my Boss RC-300, it was so easy to instantly create my own jamtracks and quickly modify them that I don’t really use jamtracks much anymore.
And I like that you thought enough of your fellow members to dress up properly for the video. I’ve been retired for a few years, so I don’t even own a coat and tie anymore.

I confess I am a loopaholic. I put together a chord progression that sounds good to my ear and that makes sense as theory (the circle of fifths really gave me a boost on this and enabled me to make some different and unusual choices) then I record it and improvise a lead against it over and over, trying different licks and triads or harmonic sixths, etc., until something pleasing begins to take shape. It’s like having another guitarist (who has endless patience and doesn’t mind playing just rhythm) in the room.

You’re right. A looper is a good aide to developing and idea, not just performing. I really don’t use mine enough will need to change that.
Really enjoyed that jazzy number. Well played. -

Great demonstration of the possibilities of looping. I‘m not used to but i think i will try it in the future.
Great tune also. Fun to listen to.-
August 2, 2021 at 11:56 pm #265471
Hi Manfred,
Thanks for your feedback – very much appreciated.
Warning: looping can get addictive! Check out the background sounds in this one: https://youtu.be/Z9buOejI-K0. It’s kitchen items and two guitars looped. A two-bar groove can be enough to get things going.
Also, when working with groups. A loop pedal is very good to quickly get a groove or an idea across.
Cheers Ziggy

I can see having a breakthrough with a looper has opened the door to do more creative work for you. It is a stalemate for those of us that would not know what to do but breakthroughs do happen. Very encouraging to hear your result on this great arrangement Yes, there would be a lot to inspire you in Tassie. Cheers, keep them coming.

Hi Laurel,
Yep, one idea triggers another idea. If that happens then I know I’m onto something I like. The loop pedal is like my ‘swipe file’. Check this one out: https://youtu.be/Z9buOejI-K0 The backing is a two-bar loop with household items and two guitars. Now, it’s become a YouTube ‘swipe file’.
Thanks for your comments and have a good week

Hi Ziggy
First of all, you’re getting a shout out for the best dressed site member challenge participant ever! 😉 And then that cute parlor Maton! I love small – but good sounding – guitars and so I’m totally envious!
I agree with you on the loopers for coming up with ideas! I only just recently bought my first looper and that’s exactly what I thought the best use for it would be for me. I also need to work on my rhythm so it may force me to be more creative with rhythm patterns.
Your composition sounded really good to my ear, if flowed very nicely with clear notes and nice melody, kind of like Lake St Clair you showed us! 😉

Hello JoLa,
Thanks for your compliments, observations, and feedback.
Accuracy and repetition can be cumbersome at times. The loop-pedal has been very helpful to improve both.
I like your great work on this site.

August 3, 2021 at 12:57 am #265485
Hi Michael,
Thanks for your feedback – very much appreciated. Yes, very helpful. So much music is played over two-bar grooves. The loop-pedal is ideal to think about that, create and play. Or, more comprehensive progressions, add other sounds, more instruments, and on and on it goes … infinite possibilities with a little practice.
Have a good week
Cheers
