I complete one year of learning to play the guitar on 01 Aug, and my 5th month in Active Melody community. This video is 10 minutes long and I am embarrassed about it; who in today’s world has 10 minutes?? I know, it’s embarrassingly long, but please do endure, thinking this to be just the work of an over-enthusiastic noob. It has got 17 very short improvisations, covering the 7 Western MODES & 10 Indian THAATS, with small notes describing them and the emotion/ feeling that is explored. My light-bulb lesson was EP 374 and 375 … I erroneously said 365 in the video. My request is to see the video full-screen and listen using an earphone.
I think the video will be self explanatory; as to what astronomical difference “my light-bulb moment” has made to my playing. Nowadays, my fingers have started moving all over the fret-board following what my mind sings, and I can’t stop improvising. (I think that this video will also give a minuscule overview of Indian Music and how it is so similar, yet different from the Western approach). God Bless Brian and Active Melody.

Very interesting combination of theory and musical interpretation. I especially like the contributions with Indian music style.

Thank you Dieter. Indian music is more natural to me, grown up with grandparents and parents listening to it… Rock and Blues came much later.

Fascinating interplay between different styles, Sumanto – beautifully played too! Well done 👍
I’ll confess, I hadn’t heard of the term “Indian THAATS”. However, this style is often played on a meditation channel I listen to on Calm radio – I just didn’t know that’s what it was called 😎🎶
Best wishes 😊

July 30, 2021 at 9:02 am #263197
Thank you Mark. “Thaat” is just the scales, like Modes… the building block of what everyone knows… “Ragas”. Number of Ragas are too many, but they generally fall under the broad categorization in which scale / grammar (or Thaat) they have to be played. 🙏🙏

Amazing Sumanto. Very well explained and demonstrated. Kudos also for the amount of time and effort you have put into this Challenge to share your understandings. All the best!

Thanks Garry. The funny part is… Recording through a DAW and clicking video and making it the way I want sometimes become a bigger challenge than the guitar itself 😆😆😆😆🙏🙏

It’s seems to me that you have learned a huge amount in 1 year, Sumanto. Thank you for putting your submission together – it’s very interesting. It also conveys your feel for the music. Well done.

Thank you Mike. This stupid pandemic did one positive thing for me at least… Staying at home, I played 6 hr or more daily, inspite of the bleeding heart and fingers… 😆😆🙏🙏

Right at the beginning I was expecting you to start playing ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac, then a bit later on I thought you were migrating into ‘Within you, Without You’ by The Beatles. Congratulations on producing such a wonderfully informative submission. You should produce an album of this entitled ‘Now Thaats What I Call Music’

Thanks Phil… You are bang on about the backing tracks. Playing over all those was lots of fun, the more difficult part was recording myself and making the video, started hating that part 😆😆.

Thanks a lot Mike. My interest grew when I first heard David Trucks and the Tadeschi Trucks Band… I thought… “OMG, this man is not playing what we Classically think as Blues… he is playing more of Indian Thaats and Raagas” 🙏🙏🙏

I like the way the different modes are associated with different emotions and feelings. I confess, however, that my ear doesn’t discriminate between many of them. I guess this is one student who is not fully ready for the amount of information his teacher bestowed upon him. Amazing amount of progress for one year on your part and an enormous amount of video work compiling this lesson. Well done.

Wow, what a deep dive into modes Sumanto. Giving western and Indian interpretations. Pretty impressive stuff. You are a real student of the game.

Thank you Allan. The Indian part comes more naturally, since I grew up with it, my parents and grandparents listening to it. The rock and blues came much later, something I am trying to understand.

I really liked the Indian modes. They sound so unusual to my western ear. It takes a few times through until my ear acclimatizes then it sounds great. Thanks.

Thank you Kerry. Yes, I agree… its different (within the same grammar of music). I heard Derek Trucks play and immediately realized… “OMG.. this guy is not playing what we understand as Blues, he is playing Indian Modes”. Do listen to him 🙏🙏

Sumanto, one of the most important things about modes is how they sound, not just which notes. You demonstration captures that so well – in western and Indian culture. Fantastic!

Thank you for the lesson, Sumanto. It was interesting and I learned a lot. Amazing what you can do by only playing some scales and how different the modes “color” the music. I was also impressed how smoothly you played the C major scales at the beginning. I think I have to do some training on this subject…
Great job!
P.S. I did not know that “Camel” is an emotion 😜 (Did get what you meant, though).Bluesige Grüße

You’ve learnt a lot in one year for sure! Thanks for putting so much time and energy into this video, I watched it all and it was fascinating.
PS If you like the Aeolian mode, Deep Purple is fun. Check out this great vid about the Smoke On The Water solo ( not too hard to learn ).
Also “When A Blind Man Cries” by them has a sweet minor solo.
Be kind to yourself (especially when you're trying to play this instrument!)

Great explanation and demonstration there Sumanto. You’ve been on quite a journey in one short year and come along way. It was years before I considered getting into modes. I was fascinated by the THAATS and how different the modal
Scales sounded over them.-

Sumanto, you have created a very scientific yet concise course on the modes in both Western and Indian music in just under 4 weeks! That’s an incredibly well done presentation, I really have no idea how you pulled it off so well!!! Great playing and your understanding of modes is very very impressive! Congratulations! WOW! 😵

Thank you JoLa. The credit goes fully to Brian, his lesson EP 374 and 375 is absolutely comprehensive. My LIGHTBULB was actually… CALCULATION of the corrosponding Major Scale to the given Mode… and then hitting the tonic of the Mode again and again, thats all 🙏🙏

It really needed the 10 mins to explain everything, so don’t be embarrassed. Interesting explanation of the relationship of 7 modes to 10 thaats and the emotions connected to them. But also to put it into 17 demonstrations, that is dedication. For some reason the Marwa Thaat and the Asavari Thaat seem more familiar. Would that be because they are used in Bollywood movies. Congrats on the one year milestone.

Sumanto, this submission was fantastic. I like the way you spent so much time with the modes/thaats and connecting an emotion to them. I think that is what music is all about… understanding and making that connection. I also find it interesting how the backing track can make such a difference in the emotion/feel of the same mode/thaat. You did an outstanding job on this submission and I greatly appreciate your insight and thoughts. I took some notes (not trying to be puny….that is Phil’s area of expertise) and will study EP 364 and 365 plus this subject area further. Thank you Sumanto! Cheers. Pap
