I’ve been a member of this site for a long time, but I never knew about the challenges. What a fantastic push to polish up songs. Here’s my take in Drop D. I tried to incorporate some tricks I learned from Brian.
Also, wow, getting it right took so many takes.

Bravo – and the Winner of the July Challenge is Kelly D!!!!
Ok, I know it’s not a competition but you win in my eyes and ears! This is by far the best guitar arrangement of this song I have seen including all the web – and in drop D, what a great idea, too!! Your picking skills are fantastic, where have you been??? I hope you stick around and show more of your playing so we can learn from you. Now I’m going to watch it again and try to absorb more of what you did. Wow – just WOW! 🙂

Well I’m certainly going to be looking forward to any future challenge response that you submit because that was technically and artistically a huge step up from what the rest of us are doing. You really have great rhythm and style and that arrangement was sublime. I’m going to stop now ‘cos I’m drooling over my tablet with awe at your playing. Bravo Missus!

Kelly, throwing down the gauntlet on this one. Wow. That is seriously an impressive arrangement and since there are no copyrights on that song, that one is 100% yours. I hope you put that on an album someday. Top notch! I love the bluesy licks that you worked in as well

Welcome to the Monthly Challenge series, Kelly. I suspect there are quite a few other AM members like you who have never checked into the forum to see what’s going on. You will be among the most accomplished musicians here on the forum, and now we will all be looking forward to hearing more of what you can do. Your arrangement was really clever, and you played it flawlessly. Your recording was very good quality, and also your video. You looked very relaxed while you were playing it, which tells me you must play in front of other people sometimes.

Kelly, that was lovely! You have a great sense of rhythm, harmony, moving parts and notes on the lower strings. I would guess that you have been around music for most of your life to have that kind of imagination. But, your guitar playing didn’t just happen – again, I’m guessing that you have devoted much time and effort to your skill – maybe a classical guitarists left hand? Please keep making monthly submissions. This was inspirational. Thanks. -Sam

Wow, good observation on the left hand. I studied classical guitar as a kid. I guess some of the technique remains. Thank you so much for the comment.

Wow, I am really humbled by all of your kind comments. What a supportive community. I will definitely be participating in future challenges. It’s really inspiring to see so many musicians working hard to improve their skills. People don’t realize how much time and effort it takes to make music sound…like music. But Brian pulls back the curtain to show us how to do it.

Hi Kelly.
It seems to me that you play in another level in here… 2 o 3 steps above the most of us.
Fantastic arrangement and recording.
Your tempo and precision is fantastic. I start to feel shy to post here…lovely bendings and blues ending btw…

Kelly,
Its so good that you made a post of this class as a debut here. You have a highly sensitive style and ability that shows you have been playing for many years I am quite sure you have worked hard to arrive here and it looked to me as thought the fret board of your Martin is witness to many hours of use. Well the results speak for themselves and I know the AM folk will hope you make loads of posts in the future and not just in the challenges.
A great accomplishment.

Just when we thought the Monthly Challenges were done and over, a talented player from long ago knocks on the door. An awesome rendition in Drop D, and I did pick up some of Brian’s notes in there, clever. You have set the bar high but don’t be intimidated by being so good just like players should not feel intimidated by not being good enough, because we all have different journeys and starting points. Glad you came in and enjoy the challenges.

Bravo! The best arrangement I’ve listened to of this song by a country mile. That’s not only the challenge responses but versions I listened to online when the challenge was set. I’m not particularly fond of the song itself but your version I could listen to again and again.

What a fantastic composition and performance, Kelly! I loved how the composition started out lower and built to use the rest of the neck and strings. There were also many different techniques and moving from major to minor pentatonic at just the right times. Really well done and look forward to more of your submissions.

Kelly, I would be embarrassed to admit how much I had to practice to get it semi presentable. You really sounded great. I like your alternate pick/finger style in the middle. Really nicely played. Cheers to you! Pap
