Hi everyone 🙂
I practiced EP314 while on vacation in San Diego for a week, spending most of my time with the travel guitar on a patio out in the fresh air – it was my dream vacation (or a lifestyle!). The minor key progression sounded so good to me, along with the minor harmonic scale Brian hinted on, so I added a sort of prelude to it 🙂 It took many takes to record it, haha! but that is my best effort for now 🙂
Looking forward to the weekend of watching everyone’s submissions, I know they’ll be great!

This was lovely, Jola. You played this very well and I thought your extra sequence fitted very well. It is also great to see you looking recovered!

Really sweet listened on headphones and the bass notes have a lovely ring to them, your not catching them at all as you play the piece with excellent picking control.
Well done a great contribution

That was a wonderfully delivered piece that you should be proud of. You never really lost the meter of the song and the overall tone of the piece was excellent. Loved the tone of that guitar. Good to see you looking so well after your illness.

That was beautiful JoLa, your improvised intro and the slightly altered tempo of EP314 made this completely your own. If I had posted that, I’d be sitting where you are, feeling ‘very chuffed indeed’ (UK expression).
San Diego is a beautiful place to chill out.Richard

Such a pretty composition JoLa. You really did a great job with the prelude. Wasn’t sure how it was going to flow into the actual lesson but as soon as you played the first bar it all came together beautifully. Very creative and sounded great.

Wow, I have no recollection of that lesson, but it sounded so beautiful. I had to go back and play Brian’s version. Excellent playing and recording quality was well done. It sounded great.

Everything about that was so good. You chose the perfect piece for that guitar. The pace was spot on throughout, with those considered pauses and sustains making it a great listen.

That’s a very nice video, Jola. I particularly liked the beginning and the ending, when the b&w turned into colour. But your playing was outstanding! I don’t see how this could have gotten any better.

Way to go Jola, great job of making it your own on the first part and played with confidence all the way thru…

Hey JoLa, very cool! You wrote a prelude to EP187 I remember. And now another that blended nicely with the lesson. All around great.

That was a great overall package and thus upper class Jola. In addition to the great video have created a really sophisticated intro. It had nothing to do with EP314 and yet you have found a seamless transition to the lesson. Respect! Furthermore, you have made your version of it. You’ve used the E-string very skillfully; discreet, yet it was a leader. Good work! I like it.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Damn, Jola… That was incredibly good. Did you write that first part? If so you need to write more stuff because it was awesome! The audio quality sounded professionally recorded also. How did you get such a great sounding recording? Was there a mic involved? Or are you plugged straight into an interface?
-
August 3, 2019 at 7:15 pm #139882
Thanks, Dave! 😊
I am plugged in directly to MacBook through an Apogee Jam interface. No external microphone was used. It’s the LR Baggs Anthem SL pickups that make the difference. They use a piezo pickup along with a mic in the soundhole. I also turned off compression on the Garageband preset. And yes, I did write that first part 😁🎸JoLa

Hi, Jolanta! I just arrived from http://www.augustibluus.ee/festivali-kava/ our greatest bluesfest and feel myself little bit wasted. Not able to rate anything but 314 seems to be most popular in this open challenge really. Very nice playing and cool guitar too. I was lucky this month again ‘cos I had a chance to drag out something from my chest again. God would be more merciful with those open challenges in the future.

Haha, Lights, I think you just called Brian ‘God’ 😇😆
Thanks for the link, you must have had a blast, no wonder you’re feeling wasted. Yes, I noticed 314 and 315 are the top choices in this challenge so far 🙂

Hummm EP314 and 315 seem to be popular. I’m not familiar with either of them. Apparently I’ll be checking them out soon. I have no idea what you’ve added Jola which is a really good thing, fits like a glove. Most gloves, not like OJ’s glove. Haha 😂
I think this is your best work.

That would have been worth watching for the production quality alone but your playing was gorgeous. I liked how you didn’t rush it but just let the whole piece gently unfold. Lovely prelude too.

Jola, beautiful video. I really loved the intro, very peaceful and serene. You’re a great player and composer and make it sound easy (being such a fluid player). Love the video work as well! 🙂

Hi, I’m really impressed with your finger style playing…
I’ve been tinkering a little bit myself trying to learn the Travis method…
I was curious how you learn to play finger style? Did You follow an online tutorial?
Thanks

Wow, thank you, Ed, for the kind words 😊
I started learning guitar with the classical approach from a couple of books, such as “Guitar for Dummies”, lol and “Beginning Fingerstyle Blues”. Then I searched the internet for whatever easy classical tabs I could find and practiced those – so I guess that’s what sort of helped me with finger coordination. As for Travis picking, there are some incredible players on this site that mastered that style and could give you the best tips. But what helps me the most is to work in short segments, very slowly, with a metronome. Then gradually increase the tempo and then the fingers “remember” what to do 🙂By the way, Brian has a lot of awesome fingerstyle lessons that would be great for those just trying it out. For starters, I highly recommend LEG031 (Chet Atkins style), EP039, EP221,and (my all-time favorite!) EP187
Thanks again, Ed, hope that helps! 🙂

JoLa, Sorry to be late in commenting. I was out of country and then of the State for a month. I did listen to Brian’s original lesson, and I think you nailed it. Your guitar has vintage sounds and well complements your controlled play. Hide
