another Last Minute Production.
Thought I’d jump off from EP105 Gilmour style and go all in on a Gilmour tribute.
A real challenge getting into his style and that tone, and then recording challenges mixing it all together, and then the inevitable out-of-sync problem. But (sigh) it’s done, and Happy B-day to Brian. Definitely a great place for learning and motivation.

Canada Moose,
Oh, man! You nailed it, David would be proud of you! It just does not get better than that unless, of course, you are David Gilmour yourself! I’m very impressed 👍🎸JoLa

Roger – Wow, that was superb. You always play beautifully but I think you outdid yourself this time. And you absolutely nailed the Gilmour style and sound. Glad to see you pull out the strat. I think you’ve threatened to do this before but I think this is the first time I’ve seen you play it. It sounds great.
Best,
GaryPS- I also went thru syncing hell this month. I can empathize with you.

Wow, very impressive playing there Canada Moose 🙂 I love the tone you’re getting as well. What are the pickups?

Thanks Brian; the p/ups are EMG active (with a battery) which lets me roll back the volume knob for a smoother tone but still get adequate volume. This is my “playing out” axe where I need extra volume to stand out in the whole band sound.

Roger,
That had to be one of your best postings! Love the tones coming out of your guitar. I could have listened to a lot more of your playing. What was that Gilmour tune after EP105? Just excellent!

Hey Moose, that was truly excellent. You must have spent countless hours learning all those to that degree of perfection. And you are also the master of vibrato and bends. What is the next step? Now that all those licks are imbedded in your brain, could you create a unique composition “in the style of” David Gilmour?

Hey Moose, that was unbelievably good, just fabulous. Your bends were spot on which is a great achievement given there were so many. Absolutely a great posting, if anything would make me go electric its your posting today. Thanks …..

Now you are really showing us something, Roger! Very impressive how you nail those bends. Interesting info about the active pick-ups in your guitar. I got to look into that. Could become another point on my list of “Reasons to buy yet another guitar” ..

Trem, the active p/ups add something, but after a week of studying “how to sound like Gilmour” videos, I think it comes down to 3 things:
first, his choice of notes (which mainly derive from the major scale and/or minor pentatonic. Some of his most beautiful phrases are just straight up major scale arpeggios
second, his “attack”, how he plays each note, and that’s all about slides and bends (ps, to get those bends right I tuned down my guitar half a fret, so they bend easier) and vibratos (he uses a whammy bar a lot so i have to compensate with lots of vibrato) but really it’s all in the fingers, how he plays each note,
and third, he uses Delay pedal really well, gives a bigger open spacey tone.
So those are the basics of his distinctive tone (note choice, attack, delay) and things like p/ups are incidental.
Also, just learning his riffs and runs builds your Gilmour-style vocabulary. This was a real instructive challenge for me.

Great post Roger. David Gilmore is definitely a challenge with all the bends and vibratos etc etc. You have nailed the sound on these tracks. Great tone from those pickups.EH!

what was weird , was the time delayed video and your playing on the the fret board wasn’t syncing at about 3.50 on but I seen enough believe you me this was winner for July for sure! Thank you too for inspiring me to play like you!

I’m have been working on some Gilmour lead work for the first time, in the past month or so.
It is amazing how he takes simple pentatonic phrasing themes and repeats them, but uses subtle changes to give them life. He will do things like add notes to a basic theme, or play it in a different position or octave. His style of bending is unique in itself. He will use several different types of bends in the same solo. He uses a wide range of vibratos as well, including using the tremelo arm. Much of what he does isn’t complex, but the subtle variations to a theme makes his playing masterful.
Roger, I think you captured that very well. Nicely done. -

Richard, I agree, mostly Gilmour is just playing runs from the major scale or minor pentatonic, pretty simple in terms of what notes he’s playing, but it’s HOW he plays them, like you said, his touch, his bends, vibratos, pauses, just masterful subtle variations on the same old scales.
I used Brian’s excellent lesson to get started, then learned the solo section from PF’s “Time”, then the final solo from Comfortably Numb. Spent a couple weeks learning the solos from tab and watching him in videos. Spent another week studying and experimenting how to get even close to his tone. That 4 minute vid took a month, and then I was too tired to fix the audio/visual out-of-sync problems.
I think Gilmour is a great example of INDIVIDUALIZING music, how to take the old pentatonics and really make them your own.
