I think everyone knows Jontavious Willis is one of the finest young bluesman around (not even sure “one of the” is necessary, nor is it really necessary to qualify my description with “young”). The link in his name will take you to his website, with concert dates, a page to buy his Blue Metamorphosis CD, and more.
Now 88, this video of John Dee Holeman was made in 1989, when he was almost 60. This is the video Jontavious selected.
There’s a crossover with my friend Eric Freeman here, as John Dee Holeman was one of Eric’s mentors and teachers, and I shared this very video from July 29, 1983 in conjunction with Eric’s story last week (from Alan Lomax Archive).
“Wade In the Water” (Alan Lomax Archive, July 29, 1983)
Flat-footing with Algia Mae Hinton, genuine porch music (this is video 1 of 9, the rest of them will pop up at the right; from Alan Lomax Archive, July 29, 1983)
“Chapel Hill Boogie” with Kenny Wayne Shepherd (2006)
John Dee Holeman (vocals, guitar) plays one of my favorite songs here, the classic, “I’m a Stranger” with Cool John Ferguson (guitar), Gerald Robinson (bass), Bubba Norwood (drums), Southern Village, Chapel Hill, NC, June 8, 2012.
“Big Boss Man” (same as above)
“John Henry” with Dom Flemons (2014)
Although Jontavious and John Dee Holeman are both associated with Taj Mahal, Jontavious met John Dee Holeman before he knew Taj Mahal (in case you wondered).

It’s my fault the post is late again this week. I’ve been sick (not at work) and in my free time preoccupied with trying to help one of the very finest practitioners of Piedmont blues, Eric Freeman, get off the streets.Don D.
