I thought to post this in the September Challenge submissions thread, but after thinking about it, although that’s where it would probably get seen by the most people, I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate. So I hope those who are concerned see it here.
Some or many of you may have noticed that member JoeD1 has not submitted anything for this months challenge. He is a regular poster and he participates in the challenge every month till now.
Some troubling news which I asked him if he wanted me to share with the AM community………He was hit by a car while out walking his dog, and is recovering. Sadly he had to have his leg amputated and is in for a long rehabilitation I suppose.
Joe is the one who pushed me hard to participate in the challenges, for which I am grateful, and we’ve communicated off line in the past. So I am praying as I know everyone here will, for a speedy recovery and a good adjustment for Joe.
Sorry to have to be the bearer of this news.

Thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement during this difficult time. I never expected the AM community would be so helpful to me especially under these circumstances.
My body is pretty badly broken but not my spirit and love of all things guitar. Fractured shoulder, fractured pelvis, fractured ribs, left leg amputated above the knee, badly scarred and swollen hands are just some of what needs healing. Sadly, my dog did not survive.
I don’t have the strength to check in the forums yet. But I certainly appreciate all of your thoughts and PMs. As time goes by and the healing process continues I will be sure to let you all know how I’m doing.
God bless you all.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I just returned home yesterday. I was in the hospital and rehab for 8 weeks. The day I was to be released from rehab and return home I had a gallbladder attack and went to the hospital to have it removed. So another 3 days in the hospital until I finally made it home. This was the longest 8.5 weeks I ever experienced.
I still have a way to go to continue healing and adjusting to my new situation. The doctors say it will probably be 6 more months before I’m finally all set with my prosthetic and back to my new normal self. I will be having a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and home health aid visiting me in my home several days per week to help me get up and running.
I think it will still be awhile before I get active in the forums. Everything I do now takes twice as long and is much more difficult. I hope to resume playing guitar but that will depend on how well my wrist and finger heal (my left wrist and my right index and middle fingers were fractured). There is still some swelling and stiffness that needs physical therapy along with everything else.
I sincerely thank everyone for your prayers and well wishes. It was very much needed and appreciated. My goal is to be strumming and participating again soon. Active Melody and the members are the best!
Joe

Joe, it’s great to see that you’re finally back at home and in more familiar surroundings. That alone must feel like a big step forward in this journey you’ve been forced to take. I see a determination in your eyes that, like Ken, makes me think you’ll be getting back to a more normal life and playing sooner than you think. But take all the time you need and we’ll see you on-line when you’re ready. You are, indeed, one tough cookie. Take care 👍.

Love that artwork Joe. You’ll be out playing soccer with that and I bet it’ll make you a better guitar player too😋
We’re big fans of a TV show in the UK called “The Last Leg” which takes a comic look at events in the weeks news but the name comes from the fact that the 3 presenters have 4 legs between them. They regularly champion disabled causes and often seem to be pimping their prosthetic legs.

I’m so glad that you are at that place in your recovery Joe. Can’t keep a good man down. I hope you adapt quickly to your “new normal”.
Couldn’t ask for a cooler looking leg than that! It’s definitely “you”.
Best of luck my friend,

Thanks everyone for helping to pull me through this whole ordeal. It was surely an unexpected twist in my life. Here’s a brief story of what happened in case you’re interested.
In September 2024 | was hit by a car while crossing the street walking my dog. Besides suffering fractured ribs, leg, shoulder, pelvis, fingers, wrist, I also had my left leg amputated above the knee. Doctors were not sure I was going to survive the first 3 days. When I woke 5 days later I was shocked, pissed, depressed, the whole gamut of usual emotions when one finds out their leg is missing.
It shook my faith. To top it off my dog did not survive. Even though the driver admitted he was in the wrong I still blamed myself for being so careless. He was speeding doing at least 60mph according to the police but I was not using a crosswalk. It was early morning and still dark but I swear the driver did not have his headlights on because I never saw him coming.
It didn’t take long for me to realize l just had to change my attitude. I’m 67 years old and there was a kid about 18 years old in the next room who had a motorcycle accident and suffered a brain injury. He had to learn to walk and talk again. My wife kept in touch with his mother who told us yesterday the doctor was ready to put the bone flap back in his head but they couldn’t find it. She went back to the hospital to find out her son was admitted as a “John Doe” and found it in cryogenics under that name.
I guess what I’m saying is there is always someone in worse shape than me. So how can I complain? The Good Lord has been with me throughout this entire ordeal and has helped me overcome this. My wife of 48 years has been a source of tremendous support and encouragement. My neighbors were there for me while I was in the hospital and cleaned my gutters, fixed a flat tire for my wife, repaired a door lock, and paid for 4 months of landscaping service while I recovered in the hospital (4 weeks) and in the nursing/rehab facility (4 more weeks).
Did I mention the day I was being released from rehab I had to be admitted to the hospital to have my gallbladder removed? I was there for 3 more days before returning home. Then I received wound care/physical therapy/occupational therapy at home 4 days a week for 4 more weeks while my wounds healed. Once the wounds healed in January 2025 I was able to start the process of getting a prosthetic leg.
My wife bought me a new scooter and we just got another dog. We’ve been married for 48 years and have had many dogs throughout our life together. I’m determined to make my life as productive and normal as possible.
I finally received my prosthesis last week and quickly developed blisters. So now I’m unable to use my prosthesis until the blisters are gone. Doesn’t really matter because my prosthetic guy is making a new socket. Like everyone, an amputee’s life is a journey. There will be bad days and good. Just keep moving forward and never give up.
Joe

Joe, this is the coolest prosthetic leg I have ever seen, it really looks great! Too bad you can’t show it off just yet, I hope they will make it fit better soon. I am sorry you’ve been through this ordeal, I hear similar stories daily since I work in the hospitals, and I know how hard and grueling it can be for people. Glad to see you’re on the mend and feeling better (mentally as well), hopefully thinking about playing again soon!

Hey Joe, thank you for your update. I continue to wish you all the best for your recovery.
What you’ve gone through is unimaginable, and I’m deeply impressed by your mental strength and the way you’re facing this challenge. Please always remember that even on days when your strength seems to fade, it’s still there — and I hope you’ll always find your way back to it.
And keep playing the guitar! I truly believe it can be a powerful source of healing, comfort, and expression for you — especially now.
Take care,

Hi Joe,
Like Bill above, I’m just reading this all now. So sorry to hear about your accident, a real shock. Sounds like you are one brave, courageous hombre! Very pleased though that you are recovering and must say that the design on your prosthetic leg is A1 Cool. Look after yourself, I’m thinking of you. 🙏🏻💙🙏🏻
